7 FAT CATTLE There was a better number forward on Monday for our autumn Fatstock Show and some excellent cattle for Tim Garside and Ralph Coward to judge. Keith Bowes won the lightweight bull class with an outstanding Belgian Blue bull with Pam Gibson in second place and Steve Oldfield third. In the heavy bulls John & Les Thompson took first price with Keith Bowes second and Les England third. There was a special price for overweight bulls which went to Millington Estate. In the clean cattle it was Tony Barker who headed the field with an outstanding lightweight heifer that took first prize in the championship. He was followed by the Wagstaff family in second place and Les Thompson took the third prize. The lightweight steer class was won by David Fox with an outstanding Limousin and the heavyweights by Tom Stephenson. Although trade has been a bit variable over the past week, it held up reasonably well with the general averages a few pence down. The continentals did hit just over 200p throughout the market and the young bulls Keith Bowes and Les Thompson shared the honours at 230p/kg. Close behind was Les England on 228p with Millington Grange on 221p. On a headage basis Richard Newby s homebred Limousin added up to 1648 with Millington Estate having another homebred bull on The black and white trade was similar averaging 163p through the market and the best of these came from Andrew Cook making 188p/kg with S Padfield on 184p and Geoff Singleton 179p/kg.

Trade improved on last week with the averages hovering on 165p/kg. Top pen of the day went to Stephen Bristow making 216p/kg with Andrew Dobson on 208p and both P Harrison and T S Watson on 184p/kg. On a headage basis it was the Harrison lamb that made 87 per head with Stephen Bristow on and Andrew Dobson on 83.

10 FAT PIG REPORT Monday 1st October Prime Pigs To p/kg Ave p/kg Last Weeks Ave Porkers Cutters Baconers Sows Boars Deadweight Cutters 162 Baconers 160 FAT PIGS We moved 483 pigs this week of which 270 came into the live market and the auction trade is still making steady progress with averages this week in advance of 118p/kg. The top two pens were shown by Graham West who made 130p and 133p respectively. Andrew Thompson then had four pens making 124p to 126p/kg and then B Blackburn had two pens on 124p. The deadweight trade again lifted this week with the cutters on 162p and the bacon pigs 160p/kg.
