1 The McLennan County 4-H LINK 1Blinking you to the latest 4-H information June 2012 Edition Is Photography one of your 4-H projects or you want to know more about it? Then plan on attending the Texas 4-H Statewide Photography Workshop at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton on June 21 and 22. This is a great workshop and just down the road so take advantage of it. Pre registration is required by June 4 th. For more information go to We have had 4-H ers and parents attend in the past and they have said it was one of the best training they have ever been to. 4 H Recordbooks are due to the County Extension Office by 4pm on Tuesday, June 19 th. There is no exception to this since they are being judged on the 20 th. For more recordbook information go to h.tamu.edu/youth_recordbooks We also need adult volunteers to assist with judging recordbooks on Wednesday, June 20 th, in Belton at 9am and at the District Recordbook judging on Thursday, July 12 th, in Waco. It is ok if you have never judged before, you have to start somewhere. Please let us know your availability when you turn in recordbooks or sooner.

2 It s hard to believe, but we have completed another 4-H year. The annual awards banquet is scheduled for August and there is a chance for every 4-H er to receive an award! Simply click on the following link and find the 4-H Award Packets either in a pdf or excel format. Or you can Sarah for the award packet. See which award you are eligible for. Some of them just require you to make a check mark. Just remember applications are due by June 30 th. Annual McLennan County 4-H Awards Banquet will be on Saturday, August 18, 2012, at the Riesel Elementary School Cafeteria with the program starting at 6PM. If you have participated in a county, district or state 4-H contest, completed a recordbook, or awards application you will be recognized. So mark your calendars and more details will be in the next newsletter about the banquet. We are sure many pictures have been taken this 4-H year!!! Blaine Peters, one of our 4-H ers, has agreed to create a photo slide show for us to watch at the Awards Banquet. 3 Welcome Mr. Payton Wren our new County Extension Agent for Natural Resource Payton will be overseeing 4-H livestock projects and some other 4-H activities. He was born and raised on a farm in McLennan County. He exhibited market swine and steers while competing in various Career and Leadership Development Events with the Riesel FFA. After graduating high school, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Tarleton State University in Agricultural Services & Development. Being a 3rd generation agriculture graduate, he is passionate about the advancement of the future for agriculture. He believes through continued research and education, the future of agriculture is going to be very exciting for the present youth and generations to follow. He looks forward to meeting all 4-H members, parents, and volunteers of McLennan County. Texas AgriLife Extension Service-Erath County and the Erath Lamb and Goat 4-H Club will be hosting a lamb and goat feeding and showmanship camp on June at the Tarleton State University College Farm. Registration is $ per exhibitor and $50.00 per adult. Adult supervision is required. Registration is open to exhibitors that will be enrolled in the 4-H or FFA program for year and current members. Registration is limited to the first 50 lamb and 50 goat exhibitors. Forms can also be downloaded Gobble Gobble! It s not time for Thanksgiving, but it is time to order turkeys for the McLennan County Junior Livestock Show, San Antonio, Houston and Austin Livestock Shows. If you are interested, orders and payment are due Tuesday, July 10 th to the County Extension Office. 3

4 If you want to show broilers at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas orders and payment are due Monday, June 25 th to the County Extension Office. Do you have what it takes it be a Texas 4 H Livestock Ambassador? Are you willing to give 30 hours of service annually to help educate other 4 H ers about their livestock project as well as interpreting the positive aspects of animal agriculture? Are you 14 years old or older? Can you attend a training on July at Texas A&M University or July at Texas Tech University? Then contact the County Extension office before June 20 th to get more information and an application. Ms. Deanna Franklin will be joining the staff on June 18 th as the new County Extension Agent for Family Consumer Sciences. Deanna will be assisting with the food and nutrition, clothing and textile, consumer and healthy lifestyle projects and activities of 4-H. In the July newsletter I will have a bio about her. 4

5 Summer Day Camps and Fun Open to all 4-H members boys and girls, young and old. We kindly ask that if you know your child needs extra adult attention or supervision that you attend with them. Also we understand that it is summer and youth want to have fun and we want them to have an enjoyable time too while participating, but please remind them these are also educational workshops. Please take note of the sign up deadlines! Not Your Every Day Sandwich Tuesday, July 10 th from 8:00am to 5pm participants will start out at the Extension Office and make homemade bread, mayonnaise and mustard. Then they will participate in a deli meat carving demonstration at Cargill followed by a tour of a dairy or two. Participants will then assemble their homemade sandwich for lunch. After lunch there will possibly be another tour and then we will attempt to make old fashion homemade ice cream, butter and cheese. Those interested are asked to sign up by Tuesday, June 26 th by calling the Extension Office. Cost is $12 per participant this will include supplies for the making of items (which will serve as lunch and snacks). QUILT IN A DAY Tuesday, July 24 th, from 9:30am to 4pm, participants will complete a patchwork quilt that will be completed by all participants. Those interested are asked to sign up by Tuesday, July 10 th by calling the Extension Office. Cost is $7 per participant, this will cover supplies for the making of the quilt. 4-H ers are asked to bring a sack lunch and their own sewing machine. Location TBA 5

6 A Day of Community Service Tuesday, July 31 st, participants will be completing various community service projects such as comfort dolls, dog toys, knot blankets or pillows, and Kleenex covers. You don t have to know how to sew to participate, there will be plenty of things to do. Participants are to sign up by Tuesday, July 17 th by calling the Extension Office. Cost is $7 per participant, this will cover all supplies for the projects. 4-H ers are asked to bring a sack lunch and their own sewing machine. Location to TBA. 4-H ers can being showing up at the location at 8am, but the making of projects will not start until 9am and they will be completed by 4pm, but 4-H er may stay until 5pm. We are offering the hour before and hour after as a convenience to parents that have 8 to 5 jobs or commitments. Food Show and Food Challenge Monday, August 6 th at the Extension Office. Participants will learn about the totally new and revamped Food Show in the morning and the Food Challenge in the afternoon. Participants can either attend just in the morning or just in the afternoon or both. This training is not just for members that have never competed in these contests, it will be for experienced and inexperienced members. The Food Show is where a member creates a dish as an individual and presents it to a set of judges. Food Challenge is where three to five members are given a bag of ingredients and a recipe without the instruction of how to make the dish. Then the team has to come up with an idea of what to make and then give a presentation to a set of judges all within 40 minutes. During the workshops we will go over the concepts of the contests and have a practice contest. There is no cost for this program; youth will just need to bring lunch money if attending both trainings. Mark your calendar for these TWO days and more information will be provided about them in the July newsletter. Bar-B-Que and Sweets Monday, August 13 th, in the morning we will be learning about BBQ safety, meats, temperatures, seasoning, etc. and for lunch you will be eating your very own original hamburger creation. In the afternoon we will have a hands-on demonstration of how to ice and decorate a cake. We will also have a cookie making demonstration. Welcome to the Real World Tuesday, August 21 st, 4-H ers 13 years old and older, do you want to be 25 years old for the day? Participants will pick their career of choice. They will then experience what it is like in the Real World when it comes to paying bills, shopping on a budget, an unintended expense comes up, etc. I promise this day will be fun with a dose of reality. We will need at least 10 participants for this workshop to be conducted. This workshop is also open to non 4-H members as longs as they come with a 4-H member. 7
