Dear Friends, Welcome to the catalogue for our 2019 bull and female sale! We have moved our sale forward and will now hold our annual sale on the Friday of Field day week. This year our sale date is Friday 8/2/19. Like many, we have had a challenging year weather wise, but have been really pleased with how the bulls have beefed up, out on their lucerne pasture during the Spring. They are a great group of bulls and have jumped through all the hoops. They have been bred to perform and then rigorously selected on type and structure. Two new sires this year are Xavier and Beacon. Xavier s claim to fame is extreme growth on a moderate frame and Beacon sires cattle that have great skin and excel in marbling and Rib-eye. The females we re offering are proven purebred cows aged 4-6 years all PTIC to purebred bulls. We have been thrilled to hear so much positive feedback about the females we have sold in previous sales, and we will look forward to hearing about these cows and their progeny down the track. We have been excited to 50K DNA test ALL of our cows as part of the CHR (Cow Herd Roundup) project implemented by the ASA (American Simmental Association). The information we recieved, and what it will mean for our breeding program is extraordinary. The sale cows are part of this and have genomically Enhanced. We look forward to presenting these cattle to you at our field day and on sale day. If we can assist in any way please don t hesitate to contact us. We hope you enjoy browsing this catalogue and are sure you will enjoy inspecting the cattle in person even more. Kind Regards, Tim, Lise, Henry and Prue. 2

STORIES FROM LANCASTER COW HERD ROUND UP (CHR) Last year we told you about the upcoming CHR program with American Simmental. We have now tested our entire cow herd and are excited to have the results. This information will be pivotal in future herd development, because: A single 50K DNA test is equivalent to the below information and more: 15 calving ease scores 20 birth weights 22 weaning weights 25 stayability records Genomic testing is most valuable in cattle with low accuracy. Typically, cows have low accuracy because they don t have enough calves in a lifetime to gain enough records to reach moderate or high accuracy. Therefore, adding genomic results to of the cow herd will markedly improve the accuracy of their helping us to make better breeding decisions. Female genotypes are rare and valuable, especially to predict maternal traits such as stayability and maternal calving ease. Furthermore, genotyping entire herds improves genomic evaluations by reducing bias created when only the best cattle are genotyped. Therefore, gathering massive numbers of genotypes on entire cow herds will significantly improve the genomic predictions and rate of genetic progress. LCS ENFORCER K25 In 2016, we sold a semen share in LCS Enforcer to Jim Butcher, Gateway Simmentals, USA and there are now calves on the ground! Early reports from the US are positive, with calves displaying good growth and structure, with a quiet temperament. His semen is also being sold commercially in the US, through Allied Genetic Resources We ve used Enforcer as a heifer bull and his progeny display plenty of capacity and muscle. You can check out some of his impressive sons, out of heifers, amongst the lots. Enforcer K25 working at Brewer Beef, who purchased walking rights to the bull in

STORIES FROM LANCASTER WHAT A DIFFERENCE 10 YEARS MAKES! Tim was excited to realise this year, that it is now 10 years since we began entering Lancaster data on the American Simmental database. Seems appropriate then, that this is also the first year the new BOLT (Biometric Open Language Tools) system, has been rolled out across all EPD s. This means we now have far greater accuracy in our cattle data. It was hard to imagine 10 years ago the advances that have been made and the difference it makes to our program. The benefits are clear: We can breed better cattle for you. You have the best information to make bull selections and buy with confidence. You have access to accurate trait figures that you can t get anywhere else. The increased accuracy and quantity of information available from the ASA database was the driving force that motivated us to participate. The growth and improvement in these, over the last 10 years, is exciting to be a part of SA JUNIOR HEIFER EXPO AND ROYAL ADELAIDE SHOW LED STEERS 2018 saw Zoe, Lizzy and Harry all preparing to take animals to the SA Junior Heifer Expo (SAJHE). Zoe put many hours into preparing the animals (and the kids!), and headed off with a great team, unfortunately minus Harry who stayed home with a broken arm. Lancaster also entered 2 steers in the Royal Adelaide Show Led Steers competition and was also represented by Meningie Area School and Westminster College, with steers in the school section. We were very pleased to have 3 of the 4 LCS steers place and receive ribbons. Congratulations to Meningie Area School, whose steer Lancaster Nelson came first in his class and also Westminster school whose steer won his carcase class. Congratulations again to Westminster who took a Lancaster hybrid steer to the Mount Gambier show and won best presented steer. 4

INSPECTION DETAILS Sale cattle are available for inspection at any time by appointment and will be yarded for inspection at 10:30am on the sale day. EDUCATED CATTLE The Lancaster herd has been educated with kelpie cattle dogs. Since implementing this management tool several years ago, we have experienced many benefits. We will continue to maintain testing and record keeping in line with MN3 accreditation standards. SALE DAY CATERING Sausages will sizzle before the sale and we d love you to join us for a steak and a beer after the sale finishes. 5

BRINGING YOUR NEW BULL HOME Buying a new bull is a significant investment. The greatest risk to this investment is in the first six months. Lancaster Simmental recommends you insure your new bull for six months from the fall of hammer; there are also many sensible management precautions you can take to reduce the risk. Bulls of all breeds and temperaments can become upset and excited in the sale and delivery process 1. They are subjected to strange yards, loss of their mates, trucking, different handling methods, new paddocks, different water and feed. When your new bull arrives home, unload him into your stockyards, ideally with a small group of cows or steers. Provide him with hay and water, and leave him alone to settle down until the next morning. Never unload your bull directly into a paddock; while unsettled from the journey, he may attempt to get out, and injure himself in the process. A young bull should be mated with a herd as a single sire, or with young bulls his own age. An older bull may injure him, or may not let him near the cows. If you plan to use a number of young bulls for a multiple mating, it is sensible to run them together for a few weeks before joining starts. This will allow them to sort out their pecking order and concentrate on their work later on. During mating, inspect your bulls regularly and closely. Check for any lameness, and for swelling or injuries around the sheath. If an injury is noticed early, and treated quickly by a qualified veterinarian, your bull has a good chance of a complete recovery. Note that it is important to replace any suspect bull immediately, to avoid low calving percentages and permanent damage to the injured bull. Lancaster bulls are fully vaccinated with Vibrovax, Pestiguard and 7 in 1 and treated to eliminate internal and external parasites. Booster vaccinations in 12 month s time will help safeguard their good health and effectiveness in your herd. 1 Lancaster Simmental acknowledges the NSW Agriculture publication on Better Bull Buying to Target Beef Markets for the material in this article QUICK REFERENCE TO ASA EPD S AND $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (): are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using, the difference between two sires represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have of +10 and 5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull s rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about and $ indexes visit Listed below are the units ASA are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Average Daily Grain (ADG): Post-weaning weight gain. Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in firstcalving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend and economics to estimate an animal s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purposetype sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about and $ indexes visit Economically relevant traits in API: 1. Cowherd intake 2. Salvage weight 3. Female longevity 4. Milk production 5. Feedlot intake 6. Calf survival The last seven traits are relevant to TI. 7. Weaning growth 8. Postweaning growth 9. Carcass weight 10. Yield grade 11. Marbling add some black magic to your herd 6

THE LANCASTER SIMMENTAL SALE BELL Pictured above: Is a list featuring the winners of the top-priced bull from 2006 to 2018 Lancaster Annual Sales. The Lancaster Simmental Sale Bell We are honoured each year to open our bull selling season by the ringing of the Lancaster Bell. With this ceremonial gesture we pass the baton to the auctioneers and welcome you our customer to our sale. Each year the purchaser of the top priced bull has their name engraved on the bell. This tradition hopes to give historical recognition and respect to those who fight it out for the top bull. The 40kg Lancaster Simmental Bell was originally a ship s bell. Tim s brother-in-law, Rob McCahey, salvaged it from scrap metal at the Flocast Foundry in Melbourne. The engraving is done freehand by Troy of Burnside Village in Adelaide. The bell is returned to him each year following the sale to engrave the details of the latest winner of the top-priced bull. Bell list: 2006 Amherst - LCS Lucky Dice Z320 $5, C.
