But that wasn t the only title had by the Galyean family in the finals Hangem Cat and Wes Galyean laid down a 224 run that earned the Open Derby Reserve title. Nonetheless, it was Metallic Cat that upped the bet by 4 points to claim the signature event championship at this year s BI. The 2008 NCHA Open Futurity Champion by Highbrow Cat, out of Chers Shadow, by Peptoboonsmal, made a splash in Fort Worth this past December with Beau aboard and he s still making waves with lifetime earnings coming into the Breeder s Invitational competition Owner, Alvin Fults, and Metallic Cat. of over $422,621. The 228 run at the BI was an all-time high score for Galyean, who just turned in his non-pro card a year ago and has been on the upswing ever since with lifetime earnings over $1,067,214 prior to arriving in Tulsa. The Open Derby Championship put Metallic Cat s earnings over the $500,000 mark, which was especially exciting to his owner. This is something that we were just dying to get to, said Fults. Once Beau kept progressing with him, that became our goal. Today was a major accomplishment. He added, All the cows that Beau cut tonight were either going to win it or lose it for us. The first cow was really tough; then, the second cow, he just wouldn t get off of him. Denver (Metallic Cat) just showed a lot of true grit and never backed off that cow, never gave him an inch. Beau admitted he was a little nervous after his brother, Wes, delivered the 224 in the first set of the finals. Most of the horse shows I ve tried to just pick some good cows that would give us a chance, he said. With Wesley putting down a great run like that, I knew that there was a lot of good cows in there but there were two that I knew would push the envelope. I started with the white square-horn that was a real tester. I felt like in my mind I had got to where Wesley was and that if I came with one more real stinger, that I might do it. So, I came with a jersey white-nosed cow that I knew was going to be a handful. We just went after it. This is one of those deals when you could be a hero or a zero. Beau also admitted he was a little nervous about matching his brother s 224. All week long there just hasn t been a score higher than a 220, he said. We ve just been trying to advance. That s the hardest part. I was just really nervous today, Beau stressed. When Wesley put up that 224, I knew it wasn t going to be that easy to beat it. We were going to have to really be on edge and give it everything we ve got. He added, He s so mature and so developed as a stud horse that he s stronger, faster and smarter. I think he could just feel and hear that this was something different today.

2 HANGM CAT & WSLY GALYAN NAB OPN DRBY RSRV CHAMPIONSHIP The Open Derby Championships were kept all in the family.the Galyean family, that is. The Reserve title, earned by Hangem Cat and Wes Galyean was had with a 224 score that held tough through one and a half sets. Hangem Cat, by Highbrow Cat out of Hangem High Playboy, by Freckles Playboy is owned by Steve Feiner, Los Angeles. The horse was gelded during his three-year-old year because, according to Wes, his mind needed to be more on the cow. He s always been a great athlete, he said. He slowly started getting better, and then in August really started to pick up. He was always real fast and wanted to make big moves. The more we worked him and the longer the year got, the more he started tightening himself down on a cow. He s just made a really good horse, and he fits me really, really well. He knows my program and my body tempo and really knows when it s time to get aggressive. Marking a 220 to win the first round and a 212 in the second to finish the prelims in the 9 th position, Galyean said he stepped the horses up considerably in the Final s round to achieve the high score. You want your horse to be radiant and crisp in the finals, said Wes. In the go-rounds you need to be smart and get to the finals. A horse like this is a tremendous athlete. He s very physical so you just try to really open him up for the finals. He was extremely good today. He added, I m really thankful for what I ve got, said Wes. God has helped me out a tremendous amount and blessed me with trying to use my talent. I just always loved cutting since I was little, I guess, because there s so many obstacles that to put it all together that feeling - is really something. We work so hard to try and get to this point; that, to have a ride like that.well, it s such a hard, hard ride to get to that point. It s very difficult and I m just very thankful that it all worked out tonight. 3 ************ NON - PRO DRBY CHAMPIONS ************ DUSTIN ADAMS & MARMOLAKR CAPTUR NON-PRO DRBY! Dustin Adams, 29, Dublin, TX and Marmolaker grabbed the Non-Pro Derby Championship by hanging tough in the final round and claiming the $31,579 prize for their 219 performance that surpassed all other runs. By Laker Doc and out of Marmolena, by Smart Little Lena, Marmolaker was a 3-year-old acquisition for Adams who bought the horse from Ranches right before the first round of the Non-Pro Futurity this past December. Dustin, who comes from a rodeo background, has enjoyed a highly successful cutting career, having amassed over $2.5m in the show pen. His experience has developed his eye for a good horse. I had seen the horse at some pre-works and really liked him. Jo llard did me right selling me this horse. Guy (Woods) sure does a good job getting them broke and training them. Dustin and Deena Adams My horse was really good in the go-rounds. This is the most consistent aged-event show that I ve had with him, said Adams. At the Super Stakes when I showed him, he would be good for a go-round, then not-so-good in the next. I ve been struggling all week here (in Tulsa) my horses haven t been feeling real good and this horse is the only one out of all of them that was doing very good. I just wanted to go cut the best cows I could in the finals. My game plan was to be aggressive, because these cuts are hard to do good. I kind of got off to a good, quick start and cut the cow right off the front and got rolling pretty fast. My plan was that, if I had a clean, good run going I was going to keep my foot on the throttle! Kelle arnheart and Smooth An Boon turned in the Reserve performance in the Non-Pro Derby when they marked a 218 for a Reserve title payout of $26,090.

4 *************** SNIOR NON - PRO DRBY CHAMPIONS *************** * JULI WRIGLY & A LITTL BOSSY * Julie Wrigley and R.L. Chartier For Julie Wrigley, it was an especially good birthday this year when she captured the Senior Division Championship of the Non-Pro Derby with a 219 in the final s that presented her with the winner s payout of $5,472. Riding A Little Bossy, a gelding by CD Lights out of Pistol Smart, by Smart Little Lena, purchased from Winston Hansma, Julie topped the Senior Final s round with a 219 during what was only the second time she has shown the horse. Wrigley Ranches resident trainer, R.L. Chartier, showed A Little Bossy to a finalist slot at the NCHA Super Stakes. I think we relaxed today, Julie explained. We had gotten through the Non-Pro and I m learning how to ride him. The way I think about this riding and showing is that if I can learn something new each time, it is a very successful show. On him, it was learning how to sit my stops and let him sit under me and not think he has to keep moving after the cow. He s very quick and cow-y. Julie also said the gelding is very sensitive on his sides and that she actually showed him wearing no spurs. After the first go, R.L. had me take off my spurs in the practice pen; and it really worked. He s very green and I think it gave him more confidence and he wasn t worrying so much about me. Julie, who spent years showing in the Arabian industry, first rode a cutting horse back in I had graduated college and had this little palomino western horse, she recalled. I took him to Shorty Freeman and asked him to make a cutting horse out of him! After about 30 days, Shorty told me he thought we could do a little better for me than that horse. So, we did a trade and that s how I got my first cutting horse, a Leo Royal mare. The following year, I was in the top ten in the Open! After getting married and moving to Chicago, cutting wasn t very practical and Julie put cutting on the back burner. She returned to the sport a half dozen years ago, and decided to get serious. It s what I always, always wanted to do, she said. I love the sport and I love the people in it. This is a world in which we re always learning; and you have to create a team to do this sport. It s important to gravitate to people that share the same values as you and see this as a team sport. Ironically, Julie still has her Doc O Lena colt out of that first mare that is 30 years old and resides at Wrigley Ranches! Julie and A Little Bossy earned the Senior Non-Pro Derby Championship by 3 points over the next highest score had by Frank Merrill and Foxy Samntha. 4 The BI Daily

5 ***************** LIMITD NON - PRO DRBY CHAMPIONS ***************** * BRANDON DUFURRNA & JAZZ AND TAZ * Brandon (L) and d Dufurrena each rode Jazz And Taz to Derby Finals Gainesville, TX non-pro Brandon Dufurrena guided Jazz And Taz to the Limited Non-Pro Derby title when the pair delivered their 214 run Saturday afternoon that couldn t be topped. The 23 year-old previous High School Rodeo All-Around Champion has clearly brought his winning ways to the cutting pen. Jazz And Taz is a Pepto Taz mare out of Smart aster Chic by Smart Chic Olena. Brandon showed his homegrown mare to a Limited Non-Pro Finals at the NCHA Futurity. Having started her himself, Dufurrena says he s confident her abiltiy. Our first two cows were really good today, he said. I messed up my third cow a bit; I kind of forced it too much. She s got a massive stop and struggles a little bit through her turnarounds, but I think that will come with time. Having ridden cutting horses for roughly ten years, Brandon rode bulls and broncs all throughout high school and won the all-around at the high school finals, where he also won the cutting. When we moved to Texas, I got to helping Dad more with the horses, and knew this was what I want to do, he said. I still go to the rodeos, but this is what I want to do for the long-term. You really don t have to be on the rode as much. He says cutting is his sport of choice because of the uncertainty involved. You can t control it; everyday is a new day. You can win it one day and it will be a whole new game the next day. There s always someone right behind you trying to beat you and it keeps you on your game. He added, My longterm goal is to win the (NCHA) Futurity. Jazz And Taz also carried Brandon s father, trainer d Dufurrena to the lead of the first round of Limited Open Derby competition last week, and then to the Open Derby Finals. Brandon, who has accrued NCHA lifetime monies prior to the win of at least $89,387, earned another $9,235 for the Limited Non-Pro Derby Championship. TH B.I.
