Sharp Shooters 4-H - Meets every Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm at the Reunion Fairgrounds. Regular business meeting in on the 1 st Tuesday of each month. Next meeting January 2nd. Young Riders - No Meeting Cornerstone 4-H - 2nd Wednesday of every month at 3 pm at Cornerstone Christian Academy. Meeting January 10th. Lake Granbury Community 4-H - Monday, January 8th, at 7:00 pm at Reunion Fairgrounds. Will be cleaning the Fairgrounds. EVERYONE is welcome to come help! Stock Show Eligibility Form If you are participating in this year s Hood County Junior Livestock Show you should have already received an eligibility form. You will need to take your form to the school and get it signed and returned to the Extension Office before the County Show starting on January 10, If you did not receive an eligibility form in the mail it is your responsibility to contact the extension office. And don t forget in order to show at the County Livestock Show you must attend 3-4-H meetings.

2 Livestock News for January 2018 Hood County Junior Livestock Show Judges Rabbit - Ken McCracken Goats - Jess Yeamen Cattle Lyle Zoeller Lambs - Dwight Callas Broilers - James Barbee Swine - Dustin Coufal Ag Mechanics - Curtis Langley Clip Day for the County Show We will have our annual Clip Day and Work Day to get ready for the county show on January 6th starting at 1 pm at the fairgrounds. If you need help clipping your animals, call the office and let me know by December 29th so we can make sure to have enough clippers and help. Pancake Breakfast The county show is just around the corner. Our annual pancake breakfast fundraiser will take place on Friday, January 12, We need 4-H ers, parents and volunteers to call or Kelli and sign up to work. We have an early shift & late shift. Be sure to invite your friends and family to come eat. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for kids 8 & under! The more tickets sold, the more opportunities for our 4-H members! Steak Lunch at the County Show Everyone participating in the county show, livestock & family living participants, are required to sell Steak Dinner tickets. Please be sure to turn in your ticket money at the log cabin at the fairgrounds on Wednesday, January 10 th or you can also bring your ticket sales to the Extension Office no later than January 10, We are trying to get an accurate meal count so we buy the right amount of food. Livestock Raisers Association The HCLRA meets on the 3 rd Thursday of every month at 7:30 pm at the fairgrounds. We need more 4-H families to get involved with this group. They make the rules for the county show, up-keep the facilities and provide us a place and opportunity to show our projects. Next meeting is January 18, Texas 4-H Opportunities Scholarship Any graduating seniors wanting to apply for the 4-H Scholarship will need to have all forms and complete application turned in by February 1, 2018

4 Spring Contests The first round of Spring contests has district competitions beginning in early March. The second round of contests fill up the month of April, bleeding over into May. Below are some of the projects/contests offered in the Spring. You can find out more about these projects on the District 8 4-H website: If any of these interest you as a 4-H er or adult volunteer, please contact Marty or Kelli. We are happy to assist in any projects a 4-H er wants to do, but it takes adult leaders & volunteers to help us make it happen. We are happy to help in any way we can. Nutrition Quiz Bowl District Contest Date: March 3rd The Quiz Bowl involves teams of three or four members. Two teams compete against each other at one time, answering questions related to nutrition, food safety, dietary guidelines, food preparation, food preservation, MyPlate, health, and consumer information with the use of an electronic buzzer system. Consumer Decision Making District Contest Date: March 3rd Consumer Decision Making is a judging contest designed to teach kids to observe, compare and make consumer based decisions based on facts. Teams of 3-4 members individually use their consumer knowledge to rank similarly based products to fit a given scenario. Kids learn to organize their thoughts and to defend their decisions in oral reasons. District Rifle Contest Age Divisions: Junior, Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: April 28th The District Rifle Contest is a competitive shooting contest with several different categories Seniors can qualify for State at the Texas 4-H Roundup. Livestock Judging District Contest Date: April 21st Livestock judging is the process of evaluating, selecting, placing, and learning the various livestock species cattle, sheep, goats and swine. Judging is the foundation of any 4-H livestock project. Horse Judging District Contest Date: April 7th Teams of three or four members individually evaluate multiple classes of 4 horses for composition and performance. Teams all compete at once, judging the same sets of classes. Both age groups give oral reasons on a specified number of predetermined classes. Meat Judging District Contest Date: April 21st Learn science-based information to consider when evaluating and making decisions, as well as learning proper meat storage and handling procedures. Photography District Contest Date: May 5th The 4-H Photography Contest encourages selfexpression and allows youth to demonstrate skills learned in the area of photography, including the use of photographic equipment. Clothing & Textiles Age Divisions: Junior, Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: April 17th Fashion Show, Natural Fiber, Fashion Storyboard, Trashion & Duds to Dazzle. 5 Adult Leader/Parents Meeting We will have an Adult Leader/Parents Meeting on January 22nd starting at 6:30 pm. The meeting will take place at the Hood County Annex 1 meeting room. Hood County 4-H Council Meeting We will have a 4-H council meeting on January 22nd starting at 6:30 pm. The meeting will be held in the Hood County Annex 1 meeting room County Roundup The 2018 County Roundup will be held on April 12, 2018 This is our public speaking, Share-The- Fun, (talent show), contest. If you need help or want more details about contest rules please contact the office at (817) H Awards As we start the new 4-H year we want to remind you about the awards you can apply for at the end of the year. Non Competitive - base on completing certain activities: 4-H Rookie - Any 1 st year 4-H er can apply 4-H Honor Roll - Junior 4-H members can apply 4-H All Star - Intermediate 4-H members can apply 4-H Letterman - Senior 4-H members can apply Completive - based on record book, applications, interviews - 2 of each may be awarded: TEXAS 4-H DOG VALIDATION PROCESS FOR TEXAS 4-H DOG SHOW The Texas 4-H Dog Show will be on July 13-15, Location is TBD. 4-H Dog projects must be validated by January 10, 2018 to be eligible to enter. The validation system is now open on 4-H Connect. There is no cost for Dog Validation at this time and as usual we encourage members to validate all the dogs they might be eligible to show. Dog Certification must be completed for EACH DOG and will cover all 4-H Youth members in that family profile however when certifying your dogs on 4-H CONNECT, you will select ONLY ONE 4-H youth member to conduct the certification under. Once a dog is certified and you begin registering for the State Dog Show, the certified dog(s) can be moved to the appropriate 4-H member that will be exhibiting the dog in the show.
