2 Gunbarrel Ranch J&N Ranch F. Morgan Feedyard Wolcott Road Leavenworth, KS Dear Friends, Our cow herd consists of 165 spring calving females, of which only 87 have had more than one calf. This is the most uniform set of cows and heifers we have ever owned. You cannot make distinctions based on phenotype among these females. In addition we have 73 pregnant Angus recip cows, many of whom are carrying Black Hereford embryos. Our herd has never been younger. This past year we used our last homozygous Black Hereford herd sire, JN Balder Next summer none of our bulls will be homozygous black. They don t need to be. Many of our cows are homozygous and all are black-hided. Genetically, we have introduced new bloodlines with bulls and sons of bulls like RIbeye, Proficient, Schular s 3T and 9R while many of our cows can trace back through 14 generations of J&N breeding. Our herd has never been healthier. Each female has been calfhood vaccinated and pelvic sized. All our Black Hereford cattle have tested free of BVD, Neospora, Johnes and are PI negative. Last year we closed the herd and will only allow outside genetics to be introduced through well proven AI sires. The herd has been certified free of all known genetic defects by the ABHA. Ear notch samples were taken and tested for BVD & PI. On August 25, all calves were vaccinated with a round of Novartis Perfringens and Ivomec, Clostra-Shield 7, Vira-Shield 6 plus Somnus. They received a second round on Sept. 15th plus a Pasteurella shot and were wormed with injectable Ivormec. They were lice dipped the last week in December. All bulls have been examined and yearling scrotal measurements have been taken. All coming two year old bulls have been semen tested. All females have been preg checked and are guaranteed bred using Biopryn blood tests. All cattle will sell with proper health papers for interstate shipment anywhere in the USA. Dry matter conversion on J&N steers was 4.7 compared to the group average of 5.0. Our steers topped the National Hereford Feedout for best feed efficiency.
