2 Hello and Welcome to our 2017 bull sale. We have seen a pretty big price change in the beef industry in the past year. Profit margins for most everyone in the beef business have gotten very slim at best. We believe NOW is the time to control cost and improve quality in your herd. The need to control costs is obvious but why quality now more than ever? The answer is premiums paid for high choice and especially for prime carcasses at the packing plants. Prime premiums have been running from $10-$20 or more over choice on a dressed basis this past year. On an 800 lb. carcass this can amount to $80 -$160 per head, quite possibly the difference between profit or loss. Nation wide, the percent of cattle grading prime is only 5-6%. The best weeks at plants sourcing high quality cattle only see about 20-25% prime. In other words 75-80% of cattle sold are leaving money on the table. The benefits of premiums are obvious to cattle feeders but those benefits are also coming back to cow calf producers as buyers are paying higher prices for feeder cattle capable of achieving premiums. Turn right (North) on Merino. Go past the BP station and Casey's to Berdan Street. Turn right (east) on Berdan Street (Hwy G77). You will see the Highway 63 overpass when you get to the top of the hill. Go under the overpass and immediately turn left (north) on 330th Street. We are the 3rd farm on the left, approximately 1.5 miles. Look for the 2 silos and grain leg. Coming from Albia on Highway 137 Turn left (north) towards Eddyville on Merino and follow the instruction above. Please Note Any bull not sold on opening day will be offered on a first come first served basis. Phone bids can be arranged. 4 Free Housing of Yearling Bulls Until June 1, As in the past, Jager Land & Livestock will keep your yearling bull until the 1st of June 2017 at no extra charge. If you take delivery of your bull immediately after the sale, we will refund $ off your purchase price. OLDER BULLS All bulls 18 months and older are your responsibility when sold. If you need a few days (less than 2 weeks) to arrange to take delivery, please notify us immediately after the sale. BREEDING GUARANTEE All animals selling are guaranteed to be fertile and capable of breeding. If bulls are found to be incapable of breeding for reasons other than injury or death, we will replace the animal if a suitable replacement is available or issue you a credit equal to your purchase price minus the salvage value. This credit may be used at a future sale. All breeding stock is guaranteed for the breeding season in which the bull was purchased. You MUST notify us before culling an infertile animal if you wish to exercise the breeding guarantee. All bulls are fertility tested and scrotal measured prior to sale day. Health papers will be provided for Interest Retained Every year we retain revenue sharing and semen interests on all registered and registrable bulls. This means the bull is totally in your control in how you want to handle him, and you get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Simply, we have the right to a share of semen sales revenue from the bull if at some time in the future semen sales become a possibility. If you sell the bull to another breeder, JLL retains semen interest. Realistically, it is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, the reason we are keeping interest in all registered/ registrable bulls is that bulls are often discovered later in life, after they have proven themselves in the breeding pasture. Even bulls sold to commercial herds may become popular at a later time, especially as carcass data is collected on their calves. If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect some semen from that bull for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. JLL may wish to collect semen from the bull, either for within herd use or to build a jointly-owned semen bank for sale purposes. If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, JLL has the right to collect the bull for their own use and in that case will pay collection expenses. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner of the possession interest.

6 Information on EPD s, Projected EPD s and Registrations You will notice as you read through our sale listing that some of the animals have been registered with the American Angus Association and some have not yet been registered. Most customers expressed to us that they do not want or use the registration papers on an animal so we now wait to register many of the animals until after the sale, registering at the buyer s discretion and JLL expense. We will be happy to register any registrable animal if notified to do so within one month of the sale of the animal. We try hard to remember to ask each buyer if they want to have their animals registered. If we forget to ask you, be sure to tell us your preference. It is easy to tell if an animal is registered. When you are looking at the animal s information, animals that are already registered have an 8 digit registration number that starts with the digit 1 on the same line as their birth date. Animals that have not yet been registered have a 9 digit number or BIR number listed that starts with a 6. Animals that are not yet registered have projected EPD s listed. Projected EPD s should be very similar to what the actual EPD s will be when the animal is registered. Projected EPD s are the average of the sire and dam EPD s. When an animal is registered these projected EPD s usually change slightly to reflect the actual performance and scan data of the bull. If an animal has projected EPD s we have made a notation in the Comments box. Genomic profiles also affect the EPD s and we can not account for this when estimating EPD s. We will do our best to insure the safety of your animal should you decide to have us house them until June 1, Keep in mind we do not guarantee the animal should something happen to it while in our possession. 8 Sale Procedure We know cattle producers are busy and we appreciate the time you have taken time to come and look at our bulls. Our sale procedure is designed to get you back to other things that you need to be doing as quickly as possible. When you get to the farm, sign in on the sale order list at the clerk s table and get a bidder number. This list sets the order in which the bulls will be sold. For example, let s say you were the first person listed on the sale order list. At 2:00 p.m., the auctioneer will call your bidder number. You will tell the auctioneer which bull you would like to purchase, for example bull #3303. The auctioneer will announce to the crowd that he is selling bull #3303. If no other buyers are interested in this particular bull, you have the right to buy this bull at the floor price which will be listed on the update sheet. If there is another interested buyer, a Bid Off will occur starting at floor price and continuing until the bull sells to the highest bidder. If you would like another bull, the same procedure will be used again until you have purchased all the bulls you would like. The auctioneer will then move on to the second name on the list and follow the same procedure. We want to emphasize you can bid on any bull when he is called by the auctioneer regardless of where your name is on the sale order list. We have used this procedure the past couple years and it has worked well; the sale went rapidly and we have received many favorable comments. If you have any questions on sale procedure be sure to ask us before the sale. Floor price per bull will be listed on the update sheets.

Many of the animals in this herd would have been registrable animals had Curt s father decided to do so years ago. We give you all the information we have; all top cut bulls are scanned, performance tested, semen evaluated, defect and BVD tested, vet examined, guaranteed and ready to go. We have used Top Cut bulls in our herd for many years and think you will like them.
