March 23, 2012 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Todd Crawford and One Fabulous Time Take NRCHA Stakes Novice Horse Open Title One Fabulous Time didn't have a magnificent start to his career - but his trainer, Todd Crawford, didn't give up. On Friday, March 23, Crawford and One Fabulous Time won the NRCHA Stakes Novice Horse Open division. "I got him early in his 3-year-old year, and showed at the Snaffle Bit Futurity, and we just missed making the finals," said Crawford, the NRCHA's only $2 Million Rider. "But he's been really good and really talented, and I'm hoping I get to keep showing him because he's doing so well in all three events." The Novice Horse Open is a one go-round division that is run concurrently with the Stakes preliminaries. Along with winning the title, Crawford and One Fabulous Time's composite score of 655 earned a spot in the clean-slate finals. "He was really good all week. I was just a little disappointed in the herd work - we had a 212," Crawford, who serves as President of the NRCHA, said. "Then he was excellent in the rein work with a and a in the cow work." One Fabulous Time, a 4-year-old stallion, is by One Time Pepto out of Cat Mist. The win netted a check for $3,087, a Gist Silversmiths buckle and a C.R. Morrison trophy.

2 Corey Cushing and PRF Spoonful Of Gold took the Open Novice Horse Reserve Championship with a PRF Spoonful Of Gold is a 4-year-old stallion by Hes A Peptospoonful out of Sons Miss Sprat, owned by Cathy Corrigan Frank. The Reserve title was worth $2,426. Jason Gay Wins NRCHA Stakes Level 1 Limited Open Championship on Cures All Jason Gay and Cures All claimed the Level 1 Limited Open Championship of the 2012 NRCHA Stakes. The NRCHA Stakes is held in Queen Creek, Arizona, at the Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre. Gay and the 4-year-old cow horse began the competition with a 206 in the herd work. "He was good. I was a little nervous because I hadn't shown much out of the herd, but everything worked out for us," he said. That 206 was followed with a in the rein work and 210 in the cow work. "I missed the last stop a little in the rein work, but other than that he felt really good. I was a little bit careful in the cow work, but we got a really good cow and it was really fun!" Gay was riding Cures All, by Peptoboonsmal out of Lenas Lacy Moon, for Kevin and Sydney Knight of Scottsdale, Arizona. Cures All would normally be shown by Kylie Knight, but when she was unable to make it, Gay got the opportunity. "I really appreciate Kylie, as well as Kevin and Sydney, for the opportunity to show this horse," the 28-year-old trainer said. "I also give a big thank you to Corey Cushing. He's been great to work for and is a very good teacher. He's always looking out for me." The Level 1 Limited Open Championship netted a check for $1,229, a Gist Silversmiths buckle, and a C.R. Morrison plaque. Jessie Telford Tops NRCHA Stakes Amateur on Vandas Spark Jessie Telford can typically be seen around NRCHA events helping her husband, NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Jake Telford, get horses ready to compete and cheering him on. But on Friday, March 23, the roles were reversed, as Jessie claimed the NRCHA Stakes Amateur Championship on Vandas Spark. It was Telford's first Championship at an NRCHA Premier Event, and the win netted $1,024, a Gist Silversmiths buckle, and a C.R. Morrison plaque. Telford and Vandas Spark, by Shining Spark and out of Smart Vandalena, began the competition with a 210 in the herd work, and followed that with a in the rein work. "She was great all week. She was really good in both the herd and the rein work," Telford said. Unfortunately, the cow work didn't go as planned, and resulted in a 196. "Needless to say, the cow work wasn't what we wanted, but I was still really happy with this mare."

3 Jake started "Vanda" for long time customer Newt White. "Newt had planned to sell her and then he actually gave her to me. I really, really thank Newt for giving her to me and allowing me the opportunity to show this nice mare," she said. "I am going to try to show her the rest of the year, and hopefully next year, as well. If that doesn't work, we'll breed her." Along with White, Telford thanked Jake, as well as her parents. "My parents drove from Oregon to our home in Idaho to watch our daughters this week," she said. "I also thank Stacey Hansen, who works for us. She's been a great help." Garth Gardiner, Ashland, Kansas, piloted Shiney Remedy to the Amateur Reserve Championship, winning $614. Shiney Remedy, a 4-year-old mare, is by Very Smart Remedy and out of Shiners Miss Hickory. Linda Wood and Cee Mr Cats Merada Win 2012 NRCHA Stakes Non Pro Limited Cee Mr Cats Merada had a busy week at the NRCHA Stakes at the Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre. Not only did he make the finals of the Intermediate Open with Mark Luis, he also took his owner, Linda Wood, to the Stakes Non Pro Limited Championship! Wood was presented with a Gist Silversmiths buckle, a C.R. Morrison plaque, and a check for $983. "My horse did really well all week," the Rolling Hills Estate, California, Non Pro, explained. "This is the first time that both Mark and I showed him - and it's my first time to show him, as well. It actually probably worked out really well since this horse is so young." Wood and her sister, Polly Potocar, were thrilled with the addition of the Non Pro Limited to NRCHA Premier Events, and searched for young horses for them both to show. "I bought this horse from Jon Roeser. I really liked his disposition and his size, and he's just a really nice horse," she said of Cee Mr Cats Merada, by Cats Merada out of Cee Miss Money Rio. Wood has been riding with Mark Luis for over five years. "I thank Mark for his help, Jon Roeser for selling me this horse, my sister Polly for her support, and all our friends and everyone who cheers us on," she said. Tehachapi, California, Non Pro James Allen won the Non Pro Limited Stakes Reserve Championship with a 615 on Nu Kinda Kat. The Reserve title garnered a check for $655. Nu Kinda Kat is a 4-year-old gelding by Nu Circle N Cash out of Squall Cat. Finalists Announced for 2012 NRCHA Stakes

4 On Friday, March 23, the finalists were determined for the 2012 NRCHA Stakes. The Stakes, held at the beautiful Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek, Arizona, is open for 4- and 5-year-old cow horses sired by NRCHA Subscribed Stallions. The clean-slate finals will be held Sunday, March 25. It took a score of 648 to advance to the finals of the Open, and a in the Intermediate Open. In the Non Pro, the bubble score was a 632.5, and competitors with a score of advanced to the finals in the Intermediate Non Pro. Contestants with a advanced in the Novice Non Pro. Telford scored a in the rein work, and in the cow work, earning Holy Cow Performance Horses a check for $1,900. Nabisco Roan had some tough luck early in his career. The 6-year-old cow horse had a slow start, and then managed to qualify for the NRCHA World Championship Show for "He did really well in the preliminaries, but fell in the fence work of the finals," Telford explained. "He's a really good horse and I was really pleased with how he worked today." Nabisco Roan, a 6-year-old stallion by Boonlight Dancer out of Crackin, is owned by Holy Cow Performance Horse LLC, of Santa Ynez, California. "I really appreciate Nancy Crawford-Hall for supporting me and my program. She has given me the opportunity to ride so many great horses and I can't thank her enough," he said. Riding Moon Me Pepto, by Peptoboonsmal out of Lenas Sissy Moon, Doug Williamson took the Open Two Rein Reserve Championship. The win added $1,140 to Moon Me Pepto's lifetime earnings. The NRCHA Hall of Famer was riding the 6-year-old stallion for the late Barbara Hastings, who passed away earlier in the week. Toni Hagen-Heath Wins NRCHA Non Pro Two Rein with Lenas Chexy Badger Toni Hagen-Heath won the NRCHA Stakes Non Pro Two Rein

6 Championship. Hagen-Heath was riding Lenas Chexy Badger, and the pair marked a in the rein work and in the cow work for a 427 total. The win garnered a check for $570. Hagen-Heath began riding "Slyd," who was raised by her husband Daniel Heath, in January of 2011, and the pair finished the season as the Northwest Region Open Hackamore Champions. "Slyd is low-headed, quick on a cow, and can really cover the ground," she explained. The 6-year-old cow horse is by Chex That Out out of Lenas Gone N Dunit. Hagen-Heath had a very successful year in 2011, which culminated with a Non Pro Two Rein National Championship on her other horse, Just Ask Me Nice. Paul Wilinski and Lizzy Go Lightly were the Non Pro Two Rein Reserve Champions, winning $380. Lizzy Go Lightly is a 6-year-old mare by Peptoboonsmal, and out of Turn Liz Loose. Larry Lommen Wins 2012 NRCHA Stakes $5K Non Pro Limited and Non Pro Limited Championships! Larry Lommen refers to himself as a team-roper - but after winning two Championships at the NRCHA Stakes, it's evident that he'll be successful in other arenas. On Friday, March 23, Lommen, of Cave Creek, Arizona, piloted FS Smart Boomer Chic to the Non Pro Limited and $5K Non Pro Limited Championship. He and the 7-year-old gelding marked a in the rein work and a 212 in the boxing for a total, worth $1,275 total. "He worked excellent today," Lommen said of his horse. "I got him in October and it's been a great experience. He's a really good horse." Lommen credits his trainer, Brad Barkemeyer, for finding the horse. Barkemeyer turned to his friend, Brandon Buttars, who owned FS Smart Boomer Chic with his wife Sophia. With Sophia at the reins, FS Smart Boomer Chic won the NRCHA Stakes Amateur Championship in "I thank Brandon and Sophia for training such a good horse, and of course, I thank Brad for finding him," he explained. The Buttars family also used FS Smart Boomer Chic, by Smart Chic Olena out of Boomers Lady Kiper, on the ranch, and the gelding is a finished rope and ranch horse. "Brandon told me he needed to take him back home to work cattle," Lommen joked. "I actually have a ranch in Colorado and I'm looking forward to being able to use this horse to show and rope on."

7 Shantel Shaver and Star Time Truckin won the $5K Non Pro Limited Reserve Championship and $488 with a score of Star Time Truckin, a 7-year-old gelding, is by NMSU Truckin Chex and out of Timely Elegance. Bill Muncaster and DMR Taris Cat were the Non Pro Limited Reserve Champions, having marked a 412. The Reserve title netted a check for $375. DMR Taris Cat is a 6-year-old gelding by Smooth As A Cat out of Royal Billy Boy.
