Running Iron Rudy SASS Member Special Thank you to John Barleycorn for picking up Running Iron Rudy s Junior SASS Membership! Welcome to the Single Action Shooting Society Running Iron Rudy, # Six Stages We now shoot six stages at Tusco. A few people have told us that they drive a good distance to shoot at Tusco and would like to shoot as much as possible. Obviously we only have room for five shooting bays. So what we do is shoot the first stage you start on twice. Consider it a warm up stage. Only five stages will be scored. You can take your best time on your first stage. If you don t want to shoot it twice you do not have to. This would provide more shooting for our shooters. New Shooters Shoot for Free at Tusco The Tusco Long Riders will be offering FREE SHOOTS to ALL FIRST TIME SHOOTERS AT TUSCO. This is ONLY for a shooter s first ever shoot at Tusco. (*this is only for monthly matches, excluding High Noon 3-day Shoot in October, and the Charity Shoot in November.) New Features We now have a Tusco Long Riders YouTube Channel and Google+ Page. 4 Prairie Dawg's Little-Known Western Facts The Boss of the Plain the Original Cowboy Hat The Boss of the Plains was a lightweight all-weather hat designed in 1865 by John B. Stetson for the demands of the American west. It was intended to be durable, waterproof and elegant. This design and the term "Stetson" eventually became all-butinterchangeable with what later became known as the cowboy hat. The Boss of the Plains was designed with a high crown to provide insulation on the top of the head, and a wide stiff brim to provide shelter from both sun and precipitation for the face, neck and shoulders. The original furfelt hat was waterproof and shed rain. Overall, the hat was durable and lightweight. On the underside, the hat included a sweatband, a lining to protect the hat, and, as a memorial to earlier designs, a bow on its sweatband, which had the practical purpose of helping distinguish the front from the back. The original designs were natural in color with four-inch crowns and brims; a plain strap was used for the band. For years, Stetson worried about the waterproofing, and finally decided to make his hat of beaver felt. It took about 42 beaver belly pelts to produce a high quality hat. Because of the tight weave of most Stetson hats, it was waterproof enough to be used as a bucket. One story tells of a cowboy crossing a long dry stretch of prairie. His canteen sprung a leak. He saved the drinking water by carrying it in his Stetson. The Dodge City Peace Commission, Stetson featured advertising of a cowboy watering his horse with some wearing a Boss of the Plains water carried in the crown. The wearer could also use the brim to direct water to a person's mouth. A high quality hat in good condition was also viewed in some places as a status symbol. The straight-sided, round cornered, flat brimmed original Boss of the Plains design dominated for about twenty years. Most 19th-century photographs show that the hat doesn't have an intentional crease at all. Most hats were kept open crown. However, through use, abuse, and customization by individual wearers, hats were modified from their original appearance. In particular, the crown would become dented, at first inadvertently, then by deliberate choice of individual owners. The brim was often rolled or curved and ornamentation was sometimes added. Often, these creases and brim shapes began to reflect where a particular hat owner lived or worked, and in some cases, even cowboys on individual ranches could be identified by the crease in their hat. 4 P a g e

5 Thus, the manufactured styles also began to change. The first popular modification was a long crease sloping from the high back down towards the front, called the "Carlsbad crease" after a style used by wearers in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Another design, derived from the pointed top of the Mexican sombrero worked its way north and became known as the "Montana peak," which had four dents, originally derived from being handled on top with four fingers. Entertainers who promoted cowboy and western culture in the late 19th century and early 20th century popularized Stetson designs. An Apache man wearing a Boss of the Plains Stetson For example, Buffalo Bill had custom hats with very wide brims made for his Wild West Shows, with later designs created for Hollywood including the Tom Mix style "ten-gallon" hats used in Western films. Over time, the working cowboy hat of the ranch cowboy, as modified by popular entertainers and rodeo competitors, became an essential part of the cowboy image. At times, various politicians, celebrities and certain law enforcement units adopted descendants of the Boss of the Plains hat to strengthen their association with the culture and values of the Old West. The Boss of the Plains-inspired design that became the modern cowboy hat has remained basically unchanged in construction and design since the first one created in 1865, demonstrating the degree to which form succeeded in following function. New Jedi Gunfighter Buckaroo Bubba At the April shoot John Barleycorn and BDOC presented Buckaroo Bubba as the newest Jedi Gunfighter, #203. This is the definition of what a Jedi Gunfighter is (from the Jedi Website): Jedi Gunfighters, n. 1. The greatest collection of fast-shooting, slick-talking, ornery, smelly and ugly polecats (except for the ladies) that ever pulled a sixgun, aimed a rifle or pointed a shotgun while specializing in shooting 'gunfighter-style' with two pistols out and blazing away. 2. Known to travel all over the USA and the world competing in Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) Cowboy Action Shooting matches. 3. There are also unique categories of these polecats like Master Jedi's, Sith Lords, Dark Lords, Pale Rider Jedi's, Outlaw Jedi's and Soot Dove's. 4. The renowned 'Jedi Council' is tasked with establishing and upholding the standards of the group. 5. Often found around the campfire with the nicest people in the world - other cowboy action shooters. Today, the 'Jedi Council' looks at the shooter's dedication in SASS, how active they are in club activities, how helpful during shoots, how well they understand Gunfighter guidelines/rules, etc. and of course, reasonable proficiency with their pistols as a Gunfighter. BUT, a Jedi Gunfighter does not have to be a pure Gunfighter at every match! A few Jedi's are predominately Traditional style shooters that shoot Gunfighter at special events, etc AND are VERY DEDICATED club officers, match directors, etc. Required Criteria - 1) Must have SASS Range Officer status (ROI or ROII) 2) Must have shot Gunfighter at least ONE year, preferably the most recent year. General Criteria - at least one of the following, PLUS being an all-around good member of SASS/CAS: 1) have won a match shooting Gunfighter (min 5 stages) 2) have shot a clean match shooting Gunfighter (min 5 stages) 3) be an Ambassador, either by deed and/or attitude. Generally understands the rules in what is acceptable as a Gunfighter. 4) ANY intangible that makes a shooter 'A Cut Above' as a Gunfighter. 5 P a g e

6 Continued from Page 1 The stages for the April shoot were based on some of Slade s Favorites, from Open Range to Roy Rogers. Slade s wife Sis was in attendance along with many other family members. We started things off by Buckaroo Bubba sharing a story. When Slade was in the hospital in Florida a fellow SASS Member, Waimea, wanted to visit Slade and present him with an honorary Outlaw Pin from the Florida State Shoot. Unfortunately he never got the chance to visit Slade. Waimea wanted to give me the pin he was to present to Slade. I made it known to Waimea that Slade has three grandchildren that shot with him and suggested that if possible could he give the Outlaw pins to them. He loved the idea and sent up the pins, which were presented to RF Coleman, Dandy Andy and Desert Belle. It was a very emotional day at the range as we tried to have fun while remembering our friend. RF Coleman, Dandy Andy and Desert Belle brought a print for everyone to leave messages on to present to their Grandmother. Also presented at the April shoot was an award of recognition of Stone Creek Drifter s National Championship. Drifter has worked hard over the years to obtain his National Championship and this was finally his year. The Award read: National Champion, Frontier Cartridge Duelist, Stone Creek Drifter, the Tusco Long Riders are proud of you, Congratulations.
