Contact Jody to sign up for a shift or two. 4-H PROGRAM ASSISTANT/SUMMER INTERN POSITION CCE Tioga Co. has available a 4-H Program Assistant/ Summer Intern position. The successful applicant will assist in planning, promoting, implementing and evaluating 4-H Program activities. Position is temporary 250 hours total at $11 - $13/hour, to commence on or around June 1 st and end on or around August 24, A high school degree and minimum of one year of college are required. Applicant must have knowledge of the 4-H program and experience working with volunteers and youth. For more information contact Melissa in the 4-H Office. Please send resume and cover letter by May 16, 2018 to: Cornell Cooperative Extension Tioga County, Attn: Melissa Watkins, 4-H Resource Educator, 56 Main St. Owego, NY SEEKING 4-H MEAT BIRD COORDINATOR The 4-H Office is actively seeking a 4-H volunteer meat bird coordinator to do the following:

2 Pre-Fair (8-10 hours max): Contact processor to acquire cages, processing forms and any additional information that buyers and 4-H members need. Communicate with 4-H staff as to the number of birds/pens are being exhibited/auctioned. Coordinate with 4-H volunteers for transport of birds to processor. During the Fair: Make sure that meat birds are well ventilated and comfortable Make sure that Meat bird cages are numbered appropriately for auction Make sure that meat birds are readied for transport to processor, including numbers, processing instructions Make sure that birds get transported to processor with appropriate instructions. Interested individuals should contact Jody or Melissa for more information. 4-H HORSE PROGRAM MEETING SCHEDULED There will be a 4-H Horse Program meeting on Monday, May 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the CCE conference room. This meeting is open to all 4-H horse club leaders and 4-H horse program volunteers. RSVP your intent to attend to Jody. RAISE YOUR HAND 2018 IS UNDER WAY! Do your part to help NY win up to $20K. Between now and May 15, we are asking EVERY- ONE who is a friend, fan, volunteer, alumni, or otherwise a 4-H lover to Raise Your Hand and Vote for New York State! Your support will help us in our quest to win up to $20k for 4-H Programming in our state. Kids today are missing experiences that grow the life skills they need like confidence, responsibility, independence, and compassion. How You Can Help: Raise your hand to support 4 H in your community and give kids the hands-on learning experiences they need to succeed in life. It s time to register for Career Explorations 2018! Career Explorations will be held Tuesday, June 26 through Thursday, June 28 at Cornell University. For over 90 years, the New York State 4-H Office has hosted this annual event. This is a one-of-a-kind event that takes youth into the college experience with three days and two nights of time spent in academic departments, walking to classes, eating in the dining hall and sleeping in the dormitories. This is the top rated program from NYS 4-H, offering youth the real world experiences that come with higher education and career development. Nearly H youth and chaperones attend the action-packed event to immerse themselves in ex-

3 ploring their future education, career opportunities, and to experience Cornell University and campus life! Cornell faculty and graduate students conduct engaged-learning workshop in tow age-specific tracks: 1. Focus for Teens (FFT) - program for youth entering grades University U (UU) - program for youth entering grades 8-9. More than 20 programs are offered to help youth understand what a particular career field entails, what type of education they would need to pursue, and to learn from the experiences of the Program Facilitators. The cost of the program is $260. Payment must be made upon registration. Financial Aid/Need based assistance may be available from NYS 4-H. Registration closes on Friday, June 1 or when the programs are full. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is April 29. Program (especially FFT) are available on a first registered, first served basis. It is important to register early to get a spot in the program that you hope to attend. Contact Melissa in the 4-H Office for more information or to register. All registrations must be done through the CCE Office. 4-H CLUB REPORTS Berkshire Broncos 4-H Club..... Last week it was reported that the Berkshire Broncos 4-H club visited the Animal Diagnostic Lab at Cornell on April 2 nd. Following are pictures from that exciting trip.

4 Ranch Riders 4-H Club..... The Ranch Riders 4-H club had a showmanship clinic, taught by one of our leaders, Jessica, on Sunday April 29. We learned the quarter system, how to stand for the judge, and how to properly lead our horse. We used several horses from Fargnoli Farms, and our leaders' horses to practice on. We did a little in-hand versatility at the end. Everyone had fun, including the horses! Hoof & Claw 4-H Club..... Member s of the Hoof & Claw 4-H club brought some of our project animals to the Tractor Supply Company store in Wysox, PA for the National 4-H Day of Service. Because we wanted to promote 4-H and help people have a better understanding how to care for animals, we displayed a pet rat along with cavy, rabbits chickens and chicks. We talked to people, answered a lot of questions, passed out 4-H stickers and let people to pet our animals. We also had a fiber station. People could feel samples of alpaca fleece, Angora, cashmere, mohair and wool from our 4-H project animals. Some of us demonstrated how to use a drop spindle to spin Finnsheep wool and alpaca fleece into yarn. We ll use the yarn to make hats and scarves. Then, we will donate the hats and scarves to charity. People really seemed to enjoy having 4-H ers bring interesting animals and activities to the store. At the end of our National Service Day time, Tractor Supply Company donated a large barn fan to our club. Club news reporter, Daniel Popp

5 H CLOVER CAFÉ DATES It s time to sign up for your club s Clover Café date or to work in a Clover Café per your Parent Commitment. Contact Jody in the 4-H Office to sign up for a Clover Café date. The following dates need to be filled. All times are 9:00 a.m. until done (typically 4-5 p.m.) and are at the 4-H Youth Building on the Tioga Co. fairgrounds. The shifts are: 9:00 a.m. - noon ; 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. ; and 2-5 p.m. (or until done).
