1 Panhandle Cowboys Gazette June 2012 Rain out Well, as anyone who heard a weather report, or looked out a window, or was outside on Saturday, June 9, we had a real frog-strangler, so, you can pretty much understand why our June 10 th match was cancelled. News reports indicated we had 12 to 20 inches of rain (depending on the source) in a very short time. Roads, highways and businesses were under water in areas where flooding did not occur during Hurricane Ivan, and areas previously flooded by Ivan had more water than needed. It definitely was not our usual scattered afternoon summertime rain showers. We certainly hope all of our cowboys and cowgirls survived without any damage from the storm. The Pensacola gun show for June 23 and 24, at the Pensacola Interstate Fairgrounds, was handled by Mad Dane, Capt Bobbie D, Wild Country, Grundy, and Sedalia on Saturday. On Sunday, the Panhandle Cowboys tables were handled by Mad Dane, Capt Bobbie D, Wild Country, and Sedalia. Mad Dane reported they saw an original Colt Pocket Open Top revolver, a Colt Bisley, a Colt M1877 DA revolver, and an original Remington M1875 revolver. Seeing those revolvers was worth a couple of days of gun show work.

3 SASS florida state championship The new SASS Florida State Championship is called The Siege at St. Augustine, and is now presented by the Ghost Town Gunslingers at the Ancient City Shooting Range in St Augustine, Florida. Check for entry forms, lodging, restaurant, and match information. The Siege at St. Augustine will be held from January 9-13, Ambush at cavern cove Ambush at Cavern Cove, the Alabama State Championship match will be held October 4-7, 2012 presented by the North Alabama Regulators. May cowboy Richard Martin was our cowboy for May. He was born in Spokane, Washington, but his family moved to a Mexican neighborhood in West Hollywood where he learned to imitate his new friends. He was working as a receptionist at MGM when a friend of his made a bet with Martin s agent that the agent could not get Richard a job as an actor. Richard Martin s agent won the bet when he got Martin an acting job at RKO Studios in In 1943, Richard Martin originated the role of Chito Rafferty in the movie Bombardier. He repeated the Chito Rafferty role in the Robert Mitchum western film Nevada. After World War II, Richard Martin (on the right in the photo on the right) went to Universal where he had the starring role in the last Universal serial film, The Mysterious Mr. M. He also starred in the 1947 film The Adventures of Don Coyote. After the war, Herman Schlom, an RKO producer, signed Tim Holt to star in a series of western films. Needing a co-star, Schlom and Holt remembered Richard Martin s Chito Rafferty character. Richard Martin then returned to RKO and co-starred with Tim Holt as Chito Jose Gonzales Bustamonte Rafferty in all 29 on Tim Holt s RKO post-war westerns.

If you know the name of this actress, give Rocky Lane a buzz at winchesteraa@cox.net. july side match With the cancelling of the June match, the June side match Coyote in the Chicken House has been rescheduled for July. You will need at least 8 shotgun shells on your person, probably more. You see, it will be a speed shotgun match shot OUTLAW style. Our shotgun knockdown targets will be used and, like in the main match, you have to knock them down to count; if you don t carry enough ammo and some coyotes (poppers) are left standing, the usual 5 second-for-a-miss penalty applies. The most hits in the fastest time wins. YEEEEHAAAAA, WHEN SHOOTER IS READY, SAY SO!

5 july bpcr match The BPCR match is scheduled for July 22, 2012 (4 th Sunday) at ERML range #4. Only blackpowder, or blackpowder substitutes are allowed as propellant, and rifles/carbines, originals or replicas, must be the exposed hammer single shots in an appropriate blackpowder cartridge. The Gov t cartridge seems to be the most popular, with a close second. (A Winchester single shot in just ain t allowed.) Match set up is from 7:30am to 8:00am. The safety briefing begins at 8:45am with shooting starting at 9:15am. After talking it over with several of the other BPCR shooters, it was decided to try the following in order to possibly increase the participation. There will be an "Open" Class for all other rifles besides the currently listed and approved single shots. This class will allow center fire lever actions, both rifle caliber and pistol caliber; single shot pistol calibers, etc. (pretty much anything SASS legal). All must still be shot with blackpowder or BP substitutes, and lead bullets. So, a guy can try his luck on the BPCR target course with his normal cowboy match rifle if he/she so chooses. We know how important this day is to America and its people. We know how the signers of the Declaration of Independence pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor when signing this document. We, also, know that by signing the Declaration of Independence, said signers committed treason against Great Britain. I am more than reasonably sure that all of us CAS shooters would have the courage to do what they did had we been there. If you have not done so lately, take the time to read our Declaration of Independence. It is an enlightening document. Happy 4 th of July

(Dal will have the book at the July match for your perusal.) Waddy Originally thought to be a temporary hand taken on at round-up, to wad out the normal outfit. Often the butt of earthy and sometimes cruel western humor. Long-horned Experienced. The opposite of a greener. Applied to an old cowhand. Angoras Also woolies. Chaps make from goat hide, with the hair retained and the hair worn on the outside.
