I realize we had a lot going on this past year with the shows, QuarterFest, and the trail ride. I would like to personally THANK all committees and their members for what they have done this past year for TQHA. We now have a new web site up and running, and new jumps to use at our shows. The shows this past year suffered some, but in most respects held their own and continued to be successful shows. Our novice shows were well attended and plans are in the works for exciting new developments for this year s novice shows and clinics. I would like to THANK all that have been instrumental in helping with these shows, it takes help from everyone to make them work. We were also pleasantly surprised at the great turnout at the Trail Ride this year. With a new Trail Ride Coordinator Katie Hill at helm and an exciting committee behind her we are looking forward to another knock out year in recreational riding. Congratulations to all who attend the Youth World, Select World, Congress, and the World Show. I know we had winners, finalist in numerous classes, so I would think that says well for our members. We also had people to attend the Region 9 Experience that placed well too. If all goes well the Region 9 Experience may be in Tennessee this year. I won t try to name our successful TQHA members in fear I might leave someone out! Congratulations to All! The Convention was held in Knoxille and was well attended in January despite the snow! I hope that there will be a lot of good to come from the meetings with everyone working for the betterment of TQHA. There was a new committee formed, Marketing and Communications, I believe we will see new ideas from them soon. We have the QuarterFest coming to Murfreesboro again this year. We will be called upon to help with the volunteers again this year as before and let s hope it doesn t rain! We will keep everyone up-to-date. I am sure that I have left something or someone out so THANKS again for all that you have done to make TQHA what it is and what it will be, so keep on supporting TQHA and AQHA...and watch good things happen! Not only do we have a new set of officers to lead the way, we also had a chance to evaluate our individual skills with a workshop by Martha Jo Tally on our skills and personality traits. 3 For Mature Audiences Only TQHA Novice Amateur All -Around Sherri Green Calling All members : Amateur News 2010 TQHA Amateur Officers President Rose Mason 1st Vice President Suzanne Mayo 2nd Vice President Dee Freeland Secretary Tina Freeland Hi Everyone, The banquet is over and everyone seemed to have to have a great time. We missed a lot of folks because of the weather. Winter has not been friendly so far. Congratulations go to Tina Freeland for winning the Amateur All-around and to Norma Jackson for winning the Select All-around. I want to remind everyone that if you have a competition card for amateur and amateur select, that you need to declare which of these you want your points to go towards if the classes are combined or if select isn t offered. Please be sure to let Kathy Fowler know ASAP. A committee was formed to address the Queen contest if we have any canidates. Allison Lail will chair that committee along with Doug Adams and Sally Almond. We again voted to spend $60 per award for the three Novice show awards and to budget $1000 for the dinner at the Country Music Circuit. We also voted to send $250 to the STAR program again this year. For the 4H awards, we voted to spend $30 each for the 6 awards we give and last, but not least, we approved $3000 for the Incentive fund along with any extra money from fund raisers. We talked about putting on an Amateur trail ride and cook-out this year, so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Spring would probably be the best time to have it and since most of you haven t been to East Fork, I think that would be a great place, but I am open to all suggestions. Also, if any of you have accomplished something with your horse or horses, like Register of Merit, Superior Award, AQHA Champion, or Trail Riding awards, let me know, so I can get it out on the web and let everyone know what you have accomplished. I would also love to know how our amateurs do at World shows and the Congress, so please keep that in mind. We need to share this information and communicate. We will try to have another meeting at one of the spring shows or at our Trail ride, so everyone please be thinking about fund raisers. Those really helped us last year, so we want to try more this year. Send me any ideas you may have. I want to wish you all a happy, safe, and prosperous new year and may God bless you all. Each member spotlight will include pictures and a biography of the member and will be displayed on the website for a period of two months. 4 Novice Show & Clinic Looking for a Spring Show? March Shelbyville, TN Check out the New Rules for Novice Shows! Awards will be given to the High-Point all Around Youth & Amateur up to $125 value!!! All 3 Novice shows will count towards the award. Circuit By the River Awards will also be given to the reserve high-point youth and amateur up to $75 value. LEARN Ride Show LEARN Ride Show Does this winter weather already have you hoping for warmer days? Start planning to come to the Circuit By the River April 8th - 11th, in with new classes added including Amateur and Youth Boxing and Speed Events! No frills attire is requested at all 3 shows. Prizes will be posted on the website. Follow the Rules Congratulations to all TQHA 2009 award winners and competitors. To see the complete listing of final winners for 2009 check out the Awards page on TQHA.org website. At this location you will also find current TQHA 2010 point standings as well as a new feature which shows current TQHA members that are nominated for awards so exhibitors can review which categories they nominated for. Rules pertaining to the TQHA awards program will also be available on the Award page. Important things to take Note: Points for the 2010 state youth world team will be counted from May 2009 through April If you were nominated in 2009 (horse/rider combination) those points will be included after a new competition card for 2010 is submitted. Amateurs that are nominated for both the Amateur Select and Amateur categories, must provide the point secretary a list of which classes should count toward which category in the event that the classes are combined. Please note that AQHA rule changes now require the show to combine the classes if there are less than 3 entries in either class. As in the past couple of years, the membership voted to allow all four days of the Hillbilly Classic (May 27 May 30) to count for youth points. A couple of important reminders regarding eligibility for awards: Please remember that the 2010 show season started with the Santa s Carrousel show in December. You must either mail your TQHA competition card application or complete the form at a show to begin receiving TQHA points. Your points will be counted from either the postmark date or the show at which it was received. Please also note that you should include a copy of your horses registration papers, unless Cathy Fowler has it from a previous year.

Although details are still being finalized, you can expect a spectacular ranch horse competition and a concert by Red Steagall on Friday night and a Derby party Saturday afternoon. On Saturday night, enjoy special performances by QuarterFest Clinicians displaying a showcase of the West and the American Quarter Horse - including a special appearance by Red Steagall! TQHA Helps Host Animal Welfare Meeting On Thursday, January 21st over 250 folks gathered at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Murfreesboro to hear updates on the state of horse welfare in TN and the United States. TQHA helped to sponsor the event for the TN Agriculture Animal Alliance, which was started with an AQHA AIM grant we received in The Alliance has since been continued by the member organizations and supported strongly by the TN Farm Bureau. Kay Johnson Smith, Executive Vice-president of the Agriculture Animal Alliance in Washington, DC, an organization representing all aspects of animal agriculture spoke about the effects on animal welfare of the economy, state and national legislation, and the changes in public opinion in our society at this time when most people think their food comes from the grocery store. She explained how lack of education and understanding causes good people to support organizations and laws that actually harm animals and the agricultural industries which allow the American people to be well fed and healthy. She showed that some prominent humane groups mislead the public, and also that many ag related advertisements, movies and promotions also mislead people who don t know better, to think that animals want to be like humans. She stressed that education of our own people as well as the general public and communication of accurate information is crucial to the future of our lives with animals.lynda Motes Hill, a TN lawyer presented an explanation of how animal welfare and animal rights differ. Animal welfare, which defines good and humane treatment of animals, is a legitimate concern of all animal lovers. Animal rights promotes the concept that animals should have identical rights as humans, including the right to bring suit against a person, and that owners should not use animals for food, work, entertainment or sport. Animal rights is annually a $300 million business in the US. One well known organization, the Humane Society of the United States, whose advertising raises more than $86 million dollars a year in donations supposedly targeted for the relief of poorly cared for animals, spends less than ½ of one per cent of these donations to physically help animals. It is important for us to understand that national organizations do not often share their funding with local humane shelters. So we should be sure to support our local shelters with our contributions directly. Ms. Hill also gave an overview of the current TN laws regarding animal welfare. TQHA has applied for an AQHA/Bank of America AIM grant this year for the purpose of hosting a program on humane care and what constitutes abuse in horses, in order to further the education of our own members and other TN horsemen.
