1 January 2019 newsletter Join Us at the Beef Expo Feb ! The Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines in the place to be Feb , when Herefords will take center stage. The 72-lot Iowa Select Hereford Sale offering will be on display beginning Wednesday morning. Catalogs have been sent to all IHBA and IJHA members and can be viewed online at To request additional copies, contact sale manager Justin Stout, ; The annual IHBA banquet on Wednesday, Feb. 13, begins with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. at Diamond Jack s on the fairgrounds, followed by a prime rib dinner at 6:30. Please note this is a time change from what was printed in the last newsletter or is in Iowa Beef Expo publicity. Meals reserved by Feb. 1 will cost $20; reservations after that or at the door will be $28. Kids meals, consisting of chicken strips and French fries, for those 10 and younger, are available for $10. Seating is limited, so reservations are encouraged. To make reservations, contact Becky Simpson at ; becky@hereford.org. Pre-payment is not required, but will expedite the check-in process. Final reservation deadline is Feb. 6 and we cannot guarantee tickets after that date. A brief program will follow the meal, highlighted by the induction of the newest member of the Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame. The juniors will hold their annual fundraiser, auctioning champion trophies for the 2019 preview show. During the social hour and meal, they will conduct a silent auction of donated items. Things donated to date include a flush service from Collison Embryo Services, a metal Hereford sign, wooden craft item and Sunglo feed products. Jackson to Enter Hall of Fame The 2019 Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame honoree is LeRoy Jackson of Jackson Hereford Farms, Mechanicsville. A complete biography on the longtime breeder and former IHBA president will be featured in the next newsletter. Rooney Honored by Beef Expo Congratulations to Tom Rooney, livestock representative for Midwest Marketer and Iowa Farmer Today, who was named the 2019 Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo. Tom has been a familiar fixture taking bids at ringside during our Iowa Select Hereford Sale for many years. Cookies Needed for Booth Cookies and other goodies are needed for the association s booth at the Beef Expo on Wednesday and Thursday. Donations can be left there or given to Marilyn Lenth. Thanks to a donation from the National Hereford Women (NHW), this custom-framed, signed and numbered print, Reflections, by livestock artist Amanda Raithel will be auctioned at the Iowa Hereford banquet. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Gammon Barn Museum. In addition to the print, the NHW also made a monetary contribution to the Gammon Barn fund to aid in preservation of the breed s history.

The new version was set to go live around Jan. 28. Check it out at Thanks to Marilyn Lenth for spearheading this project. IHBA Supports ICA Carcass Challenge The Iowa Hereford Breeders Association board voted to support the Iowa Cattlemen s Association s Young Cattlemen s Leadership Program by sponsoring two steers in the 2019 Carcass Challenge. Hereford steers entered by JJB Cattle Company, Independence, and Wiese & Sons, Manning, each received $250 in support from the association. Steer Futurity Nomination Deadline is April 1 Nominations for the 2019 Iowa Hereford Steer Futurity are due to the administrative secretary by April 1. Cost is $50 per calf. The breeder must be a paid member of either the IHBA or the IJHA and the exhibitor must be a paid member of the IJHA. A nomination form and complete rules are available on the IHBA website. There have been significant changes/clarifications to the rules for this year s event (specifically regarding DNA testing), so please read them carefully. The newest edition of the Iowa Hereford Directory has been mailed to approximately 6,500 addresses, including nearly 6,000 cow-calf producers in Iowa, all IHBA and IJHA members, all county Extension offices, Extension beef specialists and major sale barns in Iowa. It will also be available on the IHBA website. Thanks to all our advertisers for their support and to those who paid their 2019 dues in time for inclusion in the book. Spring Advertising Starts Feb. 16 The IHBA will again run a series of ads in Midwest Marketer during bull-buying season, beginning Feb. 16. The board is also exploring other venues, such as local/regional shoppers. If you have suggestions for other publications to consider, contact any board member or the administrative secretary by March 9. Have You Paid Your Dues? If you missed the deadline for inclusion in the directory, please pay your 2019 IHBA dues ($50) as soon as possible in order to remain in good standing, get your herd listed on the website, nominate a steer for the futurity and continue receiving this newsletter. A membership form is available on the website. Preview Show Set for Marshalltown The 2019 Iowa Junior Hereford Association Summer Show is scheduled for the weekend of June 8-9 at the Marshall County Fairgrounds in Marshalltown. For entry forms and additional information, contact the junior advisors. Correction: The winner of the most recent IHBA Facebook photo contest is Julie Van Langen of Iowa Falls, not Janet Van Langen. 5 Obituary Longtime Hereford breeder Carl Wagner, 74, of West Union, died Dec. 2. A member of the Fayette County Cattlemen Board, he showed cattle at the Fayette County Fair for over 50 years and in the 1990 s he and his wife Mary traveled around the country supporting their son, Mark, at the Junior National Polled Hereford Show.
