4 General Rules Membership - All applicants must be a member in good standing (paid membership dues) of 4-H in Laurens County. To be a qualified member of Laurens County 4-H, the child must have filled out a membership form, paid membership dues and turned it in to the County 4-H Leader or the Project/Volunteer Leader. The child must meet the appropriate age requirements of 5-19 years of age. When necessary, 4-H club members may be divided into Cloverbud Division (5-8 ages), Cloverleaf Division (9-11 ages), Junior Division (ages 12-13) and Senior Division (ages 14-19). Ages are as of January 1 of the current 4-H year, which spans from September 1 through August 31. Here are some examples for clarification: If a child is age 5 on January 1, she can join 4-H for the entire 4-H year as a Cloverbud member. If a child turns age 5 on January 2 or later, she must wait until the next 4-H year to join. If a member is 8 years or under as of January 1, he is a Cloverbud member. If a member is 9 years old or older on January 1, she is a standard 4-H club member. If a teen will be age 18 on December 31, he can join for the entire 4-H year. If a teen is age 19 on January 1, he cannot join 4-H but is encouraged to serve as a 4-H volunteer. All 4-H programs and activities shall be offered on an age-appropriate basis that should consider the mental and physical readiness of youth, availability of suitable curriculum materials, adequate supervision, and the health and safety of participants. 4-H aims to offer a progression of suitable, educational activities that avoid overwhelming younger participants while maintaining their interest and continuing to challenge them as they grow older and more experienced. 4-H uses a learn-by-doing approach to teach subject matter and life skills. Although competitive events are one means to do this, competition in 4-H needs to be balanced with fun and learning. Recognition is as important as awards. Therefore, both competitive and non-competitive educational programs and events need to be offered by 4-H. Even competitive 4-H events should strive to include fun, noncompetitive activities for participants and others attending. 4-H Cloverbud members are part of an introductory, exploratory program without competition that prepares them for the full 4-H membership experience as they get older (age 9). It is not intended to be the exact same program minus competitive awards. 4

5 4-H Cloverbuds are limited to participation in non-competitive activities. Ideally, separate, age-appropriate learning activities should be offered to 4-H Cloverbuds that may eventually lead to their participation in full-fledged competitive events when they are at least nine years of age, if they choose. However, if Cloverbuds are part of a competitive event involving older youth, they shall not be judged and will receive only recognition of participation (such as a green ribbon, small prize or token). 6 General Purpose Record Book These are designed to help youth set goals, track time and expenses, and identify the skills they have gained through their project work. A 4-H Record Book should be completed annually by every 4-H member (ages 9-19) for each project in which they are enrolled. Think of a 4-H project record book more as a 4-H project diary or logbook. Project Record Books should be saved since the information in them is invaluable when Senior 4-H Members create a 4-H Resume or 4-H Portfolio. The 4-H Record Book is to be handwritten by the 4-H ers. The key to having a good Record Book is to follow the directions. Do not over-think the directions! If you have any questions feel free to contact your Volunteer Leader or 4-H Agent. 4-H project record books are often used as an indication of the quality of a 4-H member s work during the year and to help with selection of 4-H awards and recognition, usually at the club/county level. Standards for judging 4-H project record books are contained in the My 4-H Record Book Score Sheet. 4-H Project Record Books are available at the Laurens County Extension Office or by visiting the following websites: Late Entries Any 4-H er turning in entries after the deadline will receive the following point deduction from score for every day it is late: Record Book 1 point out of 10 possible points Resume 5 points out of 100 possible points Portfolio 10 points out of 200 possible points Picture Contest 5 points 6

7 My 4-H Project Record Book Score Sheet A 4-H project record book is meant to be a learning experience for 4-H members. Keeping a 4-H record book helps youth to organize themselves, set reasonable goals, appreciate what is learned by meeting those goals, keep track of activities and expenses, gather information needed to apply for awards and scholarships, to help complete applications and resumes for jobs and college, and meet requirements to participate in some county, state, or national 4-H events. Completing a 4-H project record book is also a minimum requirement to be a 4-H club member in good standing and needed for a 4-H club to be designated as a 4-H Honor Club. 4-H project record books are often used as an indication of the quality of a 4-H member s work during the year and to help with the selection of 4-H awards and recognition. Below are the standards for judging 4-H project record books. Member name: 1. Does the completed record book have all required signatures? YES NO 2. Were goals set at the beginning of the 4-H year? Helpful Interview Tips The process of being interviewed is very similar to making a sale you are selling yourself as the best candidate for the program / scholarship. Impress the interviewer with your preparation by knowing: Your Product You are the product. You bring knowledge, skills, energy, accomplishments, and personality. Take an inventory of yourself and make sure the interviewer fully understands your value. The Program Know what you are applying for. This includes researching its history, purpose, and objectives. Your Contributions Based on what you have learned about the program, highlight the skills and capabilities you have that best match the program. Your interview questions are measured on two factors, content and style. Content The information you provide, add to, or clarify about your skills, experiences and goals. Make the most of each opportunity to describe all the positive things about you, the product. Style Your delivery and mannerisms. The interviewer develops perceptions of your personality and skills based on your ability to think on your feet. Organize your thoughts, then speak clearly and confidently. 19
