NEBRASKA EXTENSION IN MADISON COUNTY HAS MOVED! We are happy to announce the opening of our new building! Our new address is: 1305 S. 13th St. Norfolk, NE We are located north of the viaduct at the intersection of 13th Street and Omaha Avenue, right behind Perkins or east of Associated Wholesale Foods. Our phone number remains We do not have a fax machine. Please excuse our mess as we are still getting settled in! The doors at this time are locked, so when you get to our front door and no one answers please call the office. There are still many logistics we are figuring out and the doors are one of them! 2 County fair premiums can be picked up at our new office (see page one of this newsletter) from August 1 to October 1. Premiums not retrieved by October 1 will be forfeited. By August 13, please submit your articles with photos, or stand-alone photos, to Angela at the Norfolk Daily News. The 2018 theme is 4-H Launches Your Future. These articles will be published during National 4H Week in October. Please include a short caption identifying the photo, the event, the action and who is in it (left to right, with name and hometown). 3 Official State Fair Dates: August 24 through September 3 Registering for Contests and Livestock Shows Youth planning to exhibit a live animal or participate in an in-person contest at the Nebraska State Fair must register online by August 10 by 8:00 p.m. This includes youth participating in any of the following shows or contests: Beef Sheep Swine Meat goats Poultry Rabbits Dog Dairy Dairy Judging Contest Dog Skillathon Livestock Premier Exhibitor Presentations and Teaching Contest Public Speaking Contest Fashion Show Culinary Challenge Contest Insect ID Contest Tree ID Contest Horticulture ID Contest Weed & Grass ID Contest These are entered by the families, not the county, and must be paid for by credit card. There are no other options for payment. Static exhibits will be registered by the county. To register or for more information about exhibiting, go to getinvolved/4h-ffa and scroll to the bottom of the page. Click on the red button Click to Start 4-H and FFA Online Registration. Preparing State Fair Exhibits State Fair Exhibits can be turned into the Extension Office beginning on Monday, August 14. If this presents a problem, please call Sarah or Kristen and make special arrangements prior to August 14. Please bring your static exhibits to the Extension Office by Monday, August 20. The Extension Office will be open for your convenience on August 20 until 6:30 p.m. Food and gardening exhibits are accepted until Tuesday, August 21 at noon. Please follow directions when preparing your exhibits. When you picked up your premiums, you should have received a special instruction sheet for each project that was selected for State Fair. Any changes the judge suggested or you would like to make can be done before bringing the item to the Extension Office. Also, double-check the paperwork you received and the 4-H Fair Book that you have all the necessary supporting information and have met all requirements. Remove entry tags and ribbons from the County Fair. Label each item with your name and Madison county in an inconspicuous area so that if the entry tag is lost, the owner can still be identified. When packaging your items for transportation, please provide your own bubble wrap; however, keep the item accessible. Entry tags must be attached at the office before being transported to Grand Island. Farmer s Pride has graciously volunteered to haul large exhibits to Grand Island. 4 Are you planning to exhibit your Livestock, small animals or companion animals at the 2018 Nebraska State Fair? Register online Now! Deadline is August 10th at 8:00pm. Visit: statefair.org and click on the Get Involved link at the top and then find the 4-H and FFA link. When you arrive at this page please review the key dates, important reminders and rules and regulations. Here is where you will find information on entering 4-H Animal Exhibits and In -Person Event. (red box at bottom of page). You can register and pay for both 4-H and FFA entries in one convenient process. The website offers a full list of the 4-H and FFA classes available for exhibitors to enter online. Premier 4-H Science Award 4-Hers may choose one exhibit that was selected for the State Fair to compete in the Premier 4-H Science Award. The exhibit may be from any department. To be eligible for the award, youth must complete an award application and submit the application with his or her exhibit. The exhibit will then be judged twice, once in the project area and once for the Premier 4-H Science Award. All award applications will receive a participation certificate. Up to three top exhibits will be chosen to receive a $100 cash award sponsored by the Nebraska 4-H Foundation. The goal of the Premier 4-H Science Award is to recognize youth who utilized the scientific method or engineering design process in the completion of a static exhibit which was selected and taken to the State Fair from any curriculum area. Animal Health Requirements Beef and Dairy Cattle Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) with official ID listed issued within 30 days of the exhibition. In addition, all cattle must be tested negative for Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD) persistently infected (PI) status prior to arrival at the State Fair. Please allow 3 to 4 weeks for the test. Sheep and Goats A CVI must be issued within ten days of exhibition for all shorn sheep, carcass contest lambs, and meat goats. All intact sheep and goats, and weather 18 months and older, must have USDA Official Scrapies Identification and must be listed on the CVI. All sheep and meat goats must be shorn prior to being examined by a veterinarian. Swine CVI with official ID listed issued within 30 days of the exhibition. Each CVI must contain the statement: To the best of my knowledge, swine represented on the certificate have not been exposed to, infected with, or originated from premises known to be infected by Swine Corona Disease (SECD) or Seneca Valley Virus (SVV) in the last thirty (30) days. Dogs Must have a Nebraska 4-H Certificate of Vaccination signed by their veterinarian. Certificates are due to Lincoln on or before August 10. Forms are available at or the Extension Office.

5 4-H livestock exhibitors (Beef, Sheep, Swine, Rabbit, Poultry, Meat Goat, Dairy) will receive one (1) State Fair Exhibitor Pin (exhibitor badge). This State Fair Exhibitor Pin is your pass to the fair for all 11 days. Families wishing to purchase additional State Fair Exhibitor Pins may do so at $25.00 each. If the State Fair Exhibitor Pin is lost or stolen, a new State Fair Exhibitor Pin must be purchased for $ No exceptions. It is also recommended that the purchase of additional State Fair Exhibitor Pins be included in pre-registration through ShoWorks. 4-H static exhibitors may purchase reduced price Nebraska State Fair admission tickets or a State Fair Exhibitor Pin. 4-Hers who participate in the fashion show, dog show, presentations, events, and contests at the Nebraska State Fair will receive one (1) single-day admission ticket for each day in which they participate. 4-H judges and volunteers will receive one (1) single-day admission ticket for each day of the fair in which they assist with a show. General parking on the fairgrounds is still FREE this year for your vehicle. Adult Daily Gate Ticket (13 years & older) $12 admits (1) one adult, for (1) one day, and is available for purchase from August 25 to September 4. Five Dollar Days (13 years & older) On Monday, August 27, and Wednesday, August 29, adult gate admission will be $5. The $5 adult gate admission admits (1) one adult, who is 13 years or older, for (1) day. This ticket may only be purchased at the gate on $5 discount day. Two Dollar Tuesday On Tuesday, August 28, adult and child gate admission will be $2. The $2 gate admission admits (1) one adult, or (1) one child, for (1) one day. This ticket may only be purchased at the gate, on Tuesday, August 28. Three Dollar Thursday On Thursday, August 30, adult and child gate admission will be $3. The $3 gate admission admits (1) one adult, or (1) one child, for (1) one day. This ticket may only be purchased at the gate, on Thursday, August 30. Child Gate Admission-$3 The Advance Child Gate Admission admits (1) one child, 6-12 years of age, for (1) one day. Do not purchase advance tickets if you are attending the Fair on August 29. Reduced price child tickets will be available AT THE GATE on August 29. Child Daily Gate Ticket (5 years & under)-free Children, 5 years & younger, are admitted for free with a paid adult during the eleven (11) days.

AK-SAR-BEN Livestock and Horse Shows The 4-H Livestock Exposition will be held September at Fonner Park/State Fairgrounds in Grand Island. The Horse Show will be held September at Fonner Park (Thompson Arena) in Grand Island. Horse exhibitors do not have to qualify for the AKSARBEN 4-H Horse Show. New for 2018: Horses must have been nominated online on or before June 15 and the age requirement for exhibitors has been lowered to 10 years of age. No advancement level is required to participate in Showmanship; all other classes require youth to have passed Level II or higher Entries will be made online by families at default.aspx. Check out the premium book for rules, guidelines and schedules of the event. AKSARBEN premium books are available online at Entry responsibility rests upon the exhibitor. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLINE THROUGH THE ONLINE PROCESS VIA akentry.com by AUGUST 31. Entries submitted between September 1 and September 14 that meet the nomination rules will automatically be charged a late fee which will be two times the original entry fee.
