1 Annual 4-H Awards List Walla Walla County Awards are presented during the Annual 4-H Achievement Program in November. Awards are sponsored by individual and community donations to the 4-H program W:\4-H Evt.& Prog\Achievement Night\Annual 4-H Award Book 2013.doc page 1 of 6

2 Project Medals Project Medals are awarded for project growth, leadership, and service as determined by the judging of the member s record book. If a record book scores 80% or better for a project, the member may receive a medal for that project. There is no limit to the number of project medals a member may receive. To receive a medal, a member must: Be enrolled in the project (exceptions: fashion revue, achievement, and public speaking). Give a county or club 4-H public presentation in that project and list the presentation in the permanent record book. Submit a completed record book and a Project Medal of Honor Application form to the Extension office by the first business day of October. Fashion Revue Medals of Honor are given to the top four junior, top four intermediate, and top four senior members based on their modeling score during the Walla Walla County Fair Fashion Revue. Record Book Awards Best Record Book Awards are given to the top junior, top intermediate, and top senior members whose record books are judged to be the best in the county. Honorable mention awards are given for the second place book in each age division. Members must submit a record book to be judged for a Project Medal (see above). Secretary Book Awards Secretary book awards are presented to the member in each division (junior, intermediate, & senior) with the top scoring secretary book as determined by the judges. Books must be submitted with a contest entry form to the Extension office by the first business day of October. Books are judged on: The completeness of minutes. A complete roll call. Overall neatness. The club story. Extra information which includes pictures, clippings about the club or club members, letters and notes to the club. Treasurer Book Awards Treasurer book awards are presented for the top junior, intermediate, and senior books as determined by the judges. Books are submitted with a contest entry form to the Extension office by the first business day of October. Books are judged on their thorough completion of the Walla Walla County 4-H Club Treasurer Book, accurate accounts of financial income & expenses, and inclusion of supporting information such as receipts, meeting minutes, etc. Scrapbook Book Awards Scrapbook awards are presented for the first, second, and third place books as determined by the judges. Books are submitted with a contest entry form to the Extension office by the first business day of October. Scrapbooks are judged on their journaling, neatness, creativity, originality, appeal, and representation of all club members and their projects. 3 4-H Reporter Award An award is presented for the top 4-H Reporter book as determined by the judges. Books are submitted with a contest entry form to the Extension office by the first business day of October. Reporter books are judged on the number of published articles, the content of articles, photos, radio etc. reporting, and accuracy of information. A Helpful Hints for the 4-H Reporter is available from the Extension office. Community Service Club Awards Community service awards are presented to the first, second, and third place clubs as determined by the judges. A club community service notebook is submitted with a contest entry form to the Extension office by the first business day of October. Community service notebooks include for each project: photos, a story, promotional information, and participation summary. The recorded projects are judged on the time and effort the club has expended in fulfilling a real need. The scope of the project(s), percentage of club participation, story, and publicity are considered in the scoring. Best Window Display Club Awards Best Window Display awards are presented to the first, second, and third place clubs as determined by the judges. Displays must be in a public place for National 4-H week (first full week of October). Eye catching appeal, education value, workmanship, and promotion of the 4-H program as a whole (not just project related) are considered in the scoring. A contest entry form must be submitted to the Extension office by the first business day of October. Outstanding 4-H Club Awards Outstanding 4-H club awards are presented to the top small club with 10 or fewer members and to the top large club with 11 or more members as determined by the judges. A 4-H Club of the Year Application form is completed and submitted to the Extension office by the first business day of October. The award selection is based on the club s involvement in the total 4-H program including demonstrations, record book completion, community service, etc. and the percentage of participation by club members. Public Presentation Awards Public presentations include demonstrations, illustrated talks, and public speaking. The Walla Walla public presentation contest is open to all county 4-H members. The initial contest is held in April. Anyone who demonstrates in April is then eligible to participate in the contest held in May. Awards are given for the top presentations given during the May contest. To be eligible for a specific award, the member must be enrolled in that specific project area. Award categories are based on current award sponsors. Teen Leadership Year Pin A Teen Leadership project may be carried by intermediate and senior 4-H members in the 6 th grade or above. To receive a leadership year pin, a member must be enrolled in a 4-H project and have completed all the requirements as listed in the 4-H Teen Leadership Year Pin Application. Members receive a pin their first year in the leadership project and year guards are provided for each additional year. Pin requirements include: Be enrolled in teen leadership project Attend at least 60% of your club meetings Attend one or more Leaders meetings at the Extension office Help club members get acquainted, encourage participation, and show enthusiasm for project work and 4-H activities W:\4-H Evt.& Prog\Achievement Night\Annual 4-H Award Book 2013.doc page 3 of 6

4 Complete at least ONE or more of the following - Interview all the members of your club to find out what they would like to do in your club during the next year. - Create a phone tree for the club membership (to call members and remind them of meetings, changes in meeting plans, between meeting notices, etc.) - Write or assist with monthly club reports. Complete at least ONE or more of the following - Serve as an elected officer of your club or mentor a club officer. - Serve as a chairperson of a standing or special committee in your club. - Work with the club president and the adult leader to prepare agendas for club meetings. Complete at least TWO or more of the following - Give a public presentation at the county presentation contest. - Teach project skills, judging skills, or demonstration skills to one or more individuals. - Teach a Super Saturday class or attend a District or State 4-H event (not State 4-H fair) - Participate in an activity or show an animal at the State 4-H Fair in Puyallup. Complete at least ONE or more of the following - Be an active member of the county s 4-H teen club. - Organize a promotional campaign for 4-H in Walla Walla. (Experience 4-H, window display, etc.) - Plan and conduct a get-acquainted game for your club. - Plan a club field trip or arrange for a guest speaker. Teen Leadership Project Medal: completed record book with leadership section submitted for judging by October 1 st. Member must have given a 4-H presentation either at the county or club level. Outstanding 4-H Members for Walla Walla County Outstanding 4-H Members for Walla Walla County are chosen from the written recommendation (Nomination for Outstanding 4-H Member form) submitted by their 4-H leader by the first business day of October. Awards are given to the top boy* and the top girl* in each age division junior, intermediate, and senior. Attributes considered by the judges are: quality and growth of the member s project(s) attitude, enthusiasm, and helpfulness leadership qualities community service active participation in the total 4-H program on the club and county level. Honorable Mention Certificates are given to 4-H members who have been nominated by their club leader. * If there are no boys or no girls nominated in a division, then the award may be given to the top 2 girls or the top 2 boys in that division. Plant Science or Garden Project Award Wayne Stambaugh Memorial Award The Wayne Stambaugh Memorial Award is given to a member enrolled in a plant science or garden project, who has submitted a completed record book for judging with a complete record of his or her horticulture project, and who has been nominated by his or her leader. The Wayne Stambaugh Nomination Form must be submitted to the Extension office by the first business day of October. Judges will consider the member s commitment toward his or her project work as shown in respect to plants and the environment, decorative or income value of plants, planting requirements, and planting techniques. 5 Garden Project Award WW County Farm Bureau Special Award The Walla Walla County Farm Bureau Special Awards are Walla Walla Fair awards that are presented during the Annual 4-H Achievement Program. Requirements include: exhibit in at least three classes of vegetables and/or fruits at the Walla Walla Fair participate in the garden judging contest at the Walla Walla Fair submit a record book for judging for a plant science or garden project medal give a plant science or garden project 4-H presentation. See Walla Walla County Fair and Frontier Days Exhibitors Handbook for contest information. Adult Awards Awards are given to leaders, adult volunteers, and 4-H supporters who have contributed their time, effort, and talents to help make the 4-H program possible. Recipients are selected from nomination forms submitted to the Extension office by the first business day in October. New Leader: first or second year leaders nominated for doing a great job. Leader Booster: given for help, encouragement, and support of a leader with their club activities. Service: given to a leader who goes far and beyond the call of duty to support the 4-H program. Alumni: given to an adult, not necessarily a 4-H leader, who in their youth were 4-H members and who as adults have given extraordinarily of themselves to encourage, support, or train the 4-H youth of our community. Inspirational: given to a 4-H leader who inspires, not only 4-H members and leaders, but all people. President s Award: selected by the current Leaders Council President and given to the adult who was most helpful to the county 4-H program during the year or who has given special quiet service. An Appreciation Award is sometimes given to an individual or organization for their continuing support over a number of years of the 4-H program. Leader Year Pins Leader year pins are presented to 1 st year leaders and at 5-year intervals thereafter (5, 10, 15, etc.). Leaders must have been marked complete on the year-end completion list submitted for their club. In addition to the pins, certificates are presented at the 5 year intervals. Member Year Pins Member year pins are given each year to 4-H members who have completed their 4-H year. Leaders must mark the member complete on the year-end completion list submitted for their club. State Fair Participants Walla Walla County 4-H members who travel to Puyallup and participate in the Washington State 4-H Fair contests receive a certificate of recognition during the Annual 4-H Achievement Program. 6 Walla Walla County Scholarships Howard & Pearl Burgess 4-H Scholarship: scholarship application packets are available through Walla Walla County Extension office and are due March 1. O. A. & Marion White 4-H Scholarship: applications are available at the Blue Mountain Community Foundation, Walla Walla and are due March 1. Edward F. Fields Memorial Scholarship: applications are available at the Blue Mountain Community Foundation, Walla Walla and are due March 1. State 4-H Scholarships Approximately 16 scholarships are available that may be used at any institution offering post-secondary education. Information is available on Washington State University 4-H website.
