2 Harsh Family Dusty Prairie Ranch Welcome Friends and Valued Customers, As we get closer to our 38th Annual Production Sale, we have reflected and endured one of the harshest winters in many years! Like many of you, Gavin and I have had a winter with a lot of struggles! However, with that being said, our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been devastated with the un ruly wrath of mother nature. If there is anything we can do to help you, don t hesitate to ask. When talking with people the last few weeks, so many intangible traits such as calf vigor, mothering ability, and disposition have truly been tested. This year s extreme weather has perfectly illustrated the reason why we have developed 40 years of genetics for calves to jump up, and suck, while their mothers are doing everything they can to help their calf! So to the younger generation that are looking at our program, it takes a long time to build a cowherd that combines calf vigor, great udders, uniformity, fertility, disposition, longevity, and have the genetic potential to grade 90+ % choice! One trait that has been on my radar for years is how docile the cattle are when you sort pairs or work cattle through the chute. As Gavin and I have processed the cattle the past few years, it is amazing to watch them walk out rather than run! In fact, often times the cattle will stand by the chute for a few minutes before walking back to the pen. Those that are in an AI program breeding to the hot bulls, there is so much unknown about that bull or program. Questions often arise about how good those cattle are in regard to their feet, udders, disposition, fertility, growth and etc. When I see so many production sales with bulls running around the auction ring, I can t figure out why so many people even bid on them! It s hard on equipment, and I don t even want to imagine tagging a calf of those daughters retained. I ve been there once before with Angus genetics and we will never go back! We at Dusty Prairie Ranch don t tolerate bad disposition and have not for many years! So, if you need or want docile cattle, all I can say is Dusty Prairie Ranch has some of the best disposition anywhere in the nation! To visit a little more about this year s sale offering, when we went to grass last spring, the calves were super stout and uniform. When we weaned this fall, they are arguably the most impressive calf crop we have raised in the last 5 years! Gavin even mentioned, I wish we could keep every heifer! They are just that good!. As they have progressed, there is no doubt the mud and extreme cold temperatures have slowed their development, but I can still say with confidence, genetically they are some of the best ever offered! Almost 30% of the bulls come from dams 9 years of age or older! So if you want to build a cow herd, look closely at those bulls! Last year we held our first social and ranch tour the Friday night before the sale and it was quite the hit! With such success, will be doing that again this year! So join us Friday, April 5th at 5:30 where we will tour the cows and calves out in the pastures. Following that with a meal and a guest speaker discussing how much more energy cattle need in extreme weather conditions to meet their requirements! 9 CUSTOMER TESTIMONIALS Doug, Breeding soundness, longevity, and performance are the reasons I continue to purchase Dusty Prairie Ranch (DPR) genetics. Your bulls have consistently bred my cow herds over two 60 day breeding seasons per year and have added pounds and value to my calves. The DPR bulls I have purchased in the past years have serviced cows to an average age of 7 years old. Our last DPR bull was nearing 9 years old and our cows are delivering his calves this spring. Before finding DPR bulls I would replace a registered Angus bull almost every year. The local registered bulls simply could not hold up. The first pair of DPR bulls I used serviced 45 cows in the fall and 55 cows in the spring and stayed on the farm till they were over 7 years old. My calves sired by DPR bulls averaged 75 pounds greater at weaning over our Angus sired calves. Our last DPR bull bred 65 to 70 cows each year and sired over 400 calves by natural service for us. I remember turning out my first DPR bull on about 40 cows. The bull was 18 months old and was not as fat as the local Angus bulls I normally turned out. I felt certain that the bull would become too thin and sustain an injury during the breeding season. The bull held his condition reasonably well and the cows were bred to a 90% conception rate. I was simply accustomed to purchasing a fat young Angus bull that would fall apart and lose weight when turned out on cows. In recent years we have incorporated DPR genetics into our Dam side. I have purchased several of your open heifers and retained DPR-sired heifers from our herd as well. My kids have been developing a few heifers each year as part of their FFA SAE projects and have realized success both in the show ring and on the farm. I ve been told that a cattle show has as much influence on the cattle industry as a tractor pull has on the tractor industry. But, it is nice to see our heifers compete and land consistently near the top at the cattle show and then come home to the farm and perform in our commercial herd year in and year out. We just sold our spring calves and they topped the market. I m excited to see the calves out of our new DPR bull we purchased last spring. It is the first I have purchased sight unseen and I could not be more pleased with his disposition and phenotype. I look forward to using DPR genetics to continue to better my cow herd. SALE TERMS AND CONDITIONS Terms: Terms of the sale are cash or check, payable immediately upon conclusion of the sale and before animals will be moved. Seller will reserve the right to require a certified check as settlement before releasing any cattle. Risk: All animals are the seller s risk prior to their sale and become property of the purchaser as soon as declared sold by the auctioneer. Bidding: All animals sell to the highest bidder. Any disputes or challenges regarding bids will be settled by the auctioneer, and his decision will be final. Health: All bulls have been tested and found negative for brucellosis. All females have been officially calfhood vaccinated. All animals are eligible for interstate shipment; except as otherwise announced. The Veterinarian will assist buyers on health papers for specific states. Announcements: Any changes from information of any kind in this catalog will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence. Breeding Guarantee: Females: Cows represented as being safe in calf will have been examined and declared safe; they are considered bred without further guarantee. Cows with calves at side shall be considered breeders also without further guarantee. Open heifers are guaranteed to be breeders. NO guarantee shall apply to suckling calves.
