1 From the Educator- Dec Jan Hi everyone! 4-H enrollment is in full swing! Please be sure to hop online and complete your 4-H enrollment today and either pay with credit card, mail your check or come into the office as soon as possible. That will make everything go very smoothly for everyone! :) I would like to thank each and every one of our Shelby County 4-H Ambassadors for their assistance with 4-H school promotion. Everyone did an excellent job of promoting 4-H and sharing their 4-H stories! Also, thanks to everyone who came and helped with the 4-H Fun Night, that was an excellent turnout and that would not have been possible without your help and support! I have a challenge for everyone and it s a FUN one! In this newsletter you will find a 4-H inspired word search. The first 25 to complete their word search AND to complete their 4-H enrollment (paid as well) will get a 4-H prize! This is due by: January 6th. This is a first come first serve contest so be sure to get yours completed right away! We will have other small prizes for those who come in after the first 25 prizes have been claimed. Happy Holidays! ~Amanda News You Need to Know: All 4-H Families- Enrollment for Shelby County 4-H will be open at until January 15. Please remember that your enrollment is NOT complete until you have paid the fee. Payments made online by credit card can be activated by our office. The procedure for check or cash payments is much different. Your enrollment can not be made active until the payment is first received and processed in our office, after which it is mailed to the state 4-H office. When it arrives there, the money will be credited to your account. Only then will the state office activate your enrollment. This procedure may take several days or, as we get closer to the January 15 date, a couple of weeks. It is strongly suggested that you send or bring your payment to our office as soon as you have finished with the online enrollment. Cash and check payments may be made in our office. Checks must be made payable to Purdue CES. The extension office will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21 and Wednesday, January 11 to accommodate members who need computer and internet access for 4HOnline enrollment.

2 Both Mini (K-2nd grade) and regular 4-H members (3-12) must re-enroll each year. NEW county projects for H! Cookie Decorating, Creating With a Mix, Indiana Heritage...project details in the 2017 Shelby County Handbook. Changes in Manuals: There is a new trend toward 4-H manuals being electronic downloads instead of the paper books we have known in the past. So far, this is affecting some levels in Soil and Water and Weather. This material must be ordered by the 4-H member from the Education Store at and downloaded for personal use. If your project requires a downloaded manual for which you must pay, please bring your receipt to our office and we will arrange for you to be reimbursed for your expense. Shelby County 4-H Handbooks should be in our office after January 1, The Drop/Add date for all projects is May 15. There will be changes to project judging schedules in This may affect general projects as well as livestock/animal shows. Be sure to check the 2017 Handbook! Be sure to check exhibit requirements for your 2017 projects! A few changes have occurred, so look before you start! Do you have an interest in 4-H Shooting Sports? If you missed the 4-H Shooting Sports orientation meeting in December 6, you still have time to enroll in the project! Please contact our office or call 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator Bill Claytor at for more information. Hunter Education, a safety program beneficial to our 4-H Shooting Sports members, will be held at Brinson Hall on January 7-8, Classes will run 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and start again at 1 p.m. on Sunday, concluding around 5 p.m. Participants must attend both days and bring a sack lunch on Saturday. Class size is limited and pre -registration is required. Call our office at to register. Shelby County offices will be closed on December 23, 26 and 30, 2016 and January 2 and January 16, This includes the extension office. 4-H Livestock/Animal Exhibitors- The 2017 Indiana 4-H Horse and Pony Handbook is available. Books may be picked up in our office after you have submitted your paid 4HOnline enrollment for There will be some changes to the classes offered for the 2017 Shelby County 4-H Horse and Pony show. For details, please check your county handbook that will be available after January 1, ID Day for Sheep, Goats and Feeder Calves will be May 6 from 8-10 a.m., livestock barns Beef ID and Weigh In Day will be on Saturday, March 11 from 8-10 a.m. NO ANIMALS WILL BE TAGGED AFTER THE OFFICIAL ID DATE! If you are showing cattle, make plans to have your animals at the fairgrounds on March 11. The snow make up date is March 25.

3 ALL steers and commercial heifers showing at the Shelby County Fair MUST be tagged on Beef ID and Weigh In Day. All steers, commercial heifers and registered heifers and Dairy MUST have RFID tags! Animal enrollments, livestock auction forms, pen reservation forms, lease forms, etc. are all due by May 15! The Livestock Auction will be exhibitors only...no animals will be taken through the ring. You must be there to represent your own animal. Auction participants are encouraged to bring a picture of themselves and their animal to present to their buyer. A mandatory meeting of auction participants will be held immediately before the start of the sale. All Swine exhibitors in the 2017 Shelby County Fair must be PQA certified. This is a health and safety directive and will be enforced. THIS INCLUDES OWNERS OF ANIMALS RETURNING TO THE FARM WITH THEIR OWNERS AS WELL AS SALE ANIMALS. A Couple of Important Animal Notes: 1. Most 4-H animals must be ENROLLED in 4-H, just as our human members are. Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Goats, Horses, Llamas, Sheep and Swine must all be enrolled through the 4HOnline website by May 15. This enrollment allows the animal to be identified as an official 4-H animal that can exhibit at our county show, 4-H fun shows, area shows and the Indiana State Fair. Animal enrollment is done through the same log in you used to enroll yourself in 4-H. 2. From April 1 to May 15, you will ENTER your animal in classes at the Shelby County Fair by going to and selecting your animal from the enrollment you created earlier for it. You will then enter it in the appropriate classes. 3. Cats, Dogs, Poultry and Rabbits, due to limited ID requirements, will be enrolled as 4-H animals when they sign up for their county fair classes through FairEntry. I know this sounds a bit confusing. Just think of it in this way: You and your animal(s) will both enroll in 4-H through 4-HOnline. You will then enter that animal in classes for the fair using the The good news is, the FairEntry website replaces those multi page animal enrollment forms you had to fill out in the past! The only paperwork you need to turn in is your paid auction form and a pen reservation form (if appropriate to your species). Small animals will simply use the FairEntry website to identify their animals and enter the fair classes. Cats, Dogs and Horses must have 2017 vaccination forms completed before attending any 4-H events, including practices. These forms will be made available to you as soon as we receive them. 4 Clay Holder, Dani Bassett, Luke Schonfeld December Plans-Junior Leader Zoo Trip! We are going as a group to the Indianapolis Zoo on Friday, December 16 th. Please plan on arriving at the Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. YOU MUST BE ENROLLED IN 4-H & JUNIOR LEADERS TO ATTEND. Please plan on bringing a little extra money with you, we plan on stopping afterward for dinner. Also, if you would like to purchase anything at the gift shops you will be responsible for that. Please, please, please let me know if you are going to attend Christmas at the Zoo by Wednesday, December 14th. The first Junior Leader meeting of 2017 will be on January 18. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. 4-H Adult Volunteers- The H Adult Volunteer packets were mailed in October. A big thank you to those of you who have submitted your 4HOnline 2017 enrollment! If you have not completed this, please do so NOW! Your 2017 Adult Volunteer enrollment MUST be completed before you meet with the children in 2017!! Don t forget your Annual 4-H Unit/Club Financial Report is due before February 1, This is for your 2016 financial year. 4-H Grows Volunteer Workshops are being offered around the state beginning January 27. Sessions topics include Characteristics of Youth Development & Experiential Learning, What are SPARK Clubs and how can you use them?, Livestock, Health and Food Science, Art and Recycling Science. Any Shelby County Adult Volunteer can visit bit.ly/4hgrowsscience for more information and to register. New Volunteer Training Series: There are four available sessions, new materials presented at each session. Focusing on the Essential Elements of Youth Development. This training series is designed to assist club leaders with the essential elements of youth development, provide resources, ideas and additional materials to implement into your clubs. These sessions are a great way to glean ideas, build upon your TEAM kits, get 4-H updates and have fun! 5 Attention Grades 10-12: It is time to think about scholarships and we have help for you! From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on January 10, we will have an hour long work shop to provide you with tips on how to write those WOW statements to make your application stand out! Please RSVP before January 9 to the Extension office or Amanda at aveenhuizen@purdue.edu. Also, college bound members be sure to check out the Shelby County Ag Promotion Scholarship. You must complete the form and essay and return it by February 17th. Let us know if you have any questions. Hunters Education (an important skill for shooting sports) is January 7 through January 8, 2017 at Brinson Hall on the Shelby Co Fairgrounds. Call the extension office to preregister.
