Volunteers are crucial to the success of any county/district 4-H program. Over the years, Elk County has had and continues to have some awesome volunteers. Without your help and efforts, many things that are done here would not happen. For that, I thank you!! I know many of you are spread pretty thin with all the activities and events you are involved in. However, I have two opportunities for volunteers to help out. First is for a Teen Leader Coordinator. Teen Leaders meets on the third Sunday of every month. This group needs someone to meet and work with them that has new and fresh ideas. The second opportunity is for one or two fair superintendents. Lisa Harrod has decided to step away from being the Fashion Revue Fair Superintendent. Lisa has provided many years of dedicated service to this event and I thank her for all her efforts! If you have an interest in any of these opportunities, please visit with me about them. 1

2 Elk County 4-H Council Elk County 4-H Council will meet Wednesday, February 1, 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Meeting Room in Howard. Tickets sales for the Valentine s Steak Dinner are due at this meeting. All clubs should be represented with both youth and adult members. Elk County 4-H Club Day 4-H Club Day is set for Saturday, March 4 at West Elk High School in Howard. Entries are due in the Extension Office by Monday, February 20. No late entries will be accepted! All 4-H'ers are encouraged to have an entry for 4-H Club Day. One of the basic requirements in order to be eligible for an Excellence in Project Achievement Award is to give at least two formal talks or demonstrations (unless you are a first year member and then you have to give at least one). Each family or person is responsible for their own entries. Club presidents should mark whether or not your club is performing a model meeting. An entry form is included in this month s newsletter and is also available on the Rolling Prairie Extension website at Also on the website, you will find the PowerPoint slides from the Basics of 4-H Club Day presentation that I did several years ago, club day guidelines, score sheets, and a presentation and poster tips document. All of these are in PDF files that you may view and/or print. Rolling Prairie Website and Elk County 4-H Information If you have not been to the Rolling Prairie website lately, I would encourage you to go there and check out the information about Elk County 4-H. From the home page of the Rolling Prairie District on the left-hand side, click on Elk County 4-H. From there 2 you will find information like the Elk County 4-H Handbook, and a Google calendar of events. There are also several subpages of information. If you notice a link that does not work, please let me know so I can get it corrected. Subpages are: 4-H Officer Resources -- Includes all the materials and resources for each officer. 4-H Events and Activities -- Has information about the Jim Williams Memorial Event Scholarship, 4-H Club Days, Favorite Food Show, 4-H Camp, and the State 4-H website. Spring Shows, Sales, Judging, and Other Events -- Includes a listing of all spring events, shows, sales and other events that the Extension Office receives. This page will be updated regularly as dates are received. Market Livestock Information -- Includes an explanation of the livestock educational requirement, the weight range and ADG requirements for each market species, and weight charts for each species. County Fair -- Information will be posted here about the county fair in the upcoming months. Record Books -- All record sheets and information about completing records are here. Volunteers -- Information about becoming a registered volunteer. Livestock Breeding Projects Tagged/Identified in 2017 If you wish to exhibit a breeding animal of any species at the 2017 Elk County Fair, you must be enrolled in the breeding project for that respective species by May 1. In addition, all breeding livestock to be exhibited at the 2017 Elk County Fair will need to be tagged at the regular county tagging either in February or April. The only exception will be for registered purebred livestock that will not have to have a

3 county tag, if they have proper tattoos and registration papers. In this case, ownership of these animals must be verified by registration papers showing immediate family ownership by May 1. This will be done by simply bringing registration papers to the Extension Office and we will make a copy of the papers. To clarify, if you have a commercial (nonregistered) breeding animal, bring them to the spring weigh-ins and we will put a county tag in them. If you have a registered breeding animal and do not want a county tag in them, bring your registration papers to the office by May 1 to verify ownership. This does not apply to bucket calves, dairy goats, or dairy cattle. Beef Weigh In Sunday, February 19 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Howard Fairgrounds Weigh in and tag day will be Sunday, February 19 at the Howard Fairgrounds. Tags will cost $3.00. Kansas Junior Producer Days March 11 is the Kansas Junior Swine Producer Day in Weber Arena on the KSU campus in Manhattan. This highly interactive, hands on educational event will be a fun filled day of activities in which youth, parents, swine project leaders and adults can increase their knowledge and experience of swine production and management practices. Presentations and demonstrations will be provided by K-State faculty members and graduate students, as well as the guest speaker Kade Hummel. Kade works for JBS United as the Lindner United sales manager and was formally field representative for the National Swine Registry for seven years. He has judged many prestigious shows across the country including the Houston Barrow Show, National Western, and numerous other state and county fairs. All participants will receive a K-State Show Pig Guide, T-shirt, and a complimentary noon lunch. Participants with registrations received after February 22 cannot be guaranteed a T-shirt. March 25 is the Kansas Junior Meat Goat Producers Day. This event is dedicated to meat goat production and management practices. This interactive workshop is designed for all ages and skill levels. This year, participants will learn the basics of meat goat production including: selection, nutrition, health and show ring practice. Registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. in the lobby area of Weber Hall with the program kicking off at 9:15 a.m. and concluding at 2:00 p.m. All participants will receive a T-shirt, complimentary lunch, and a Meat Goat Show Guide. Participants with registrations received after March 3 cannot be guaranteed a T-shirt. Registration costs are $15 for each day. 4-H Camp June For members 3 rd grade through 7 th grade complete. $200 + transportation costs (transportation costs not determined until after registrations are due and how many that are going to camp is known.) Registration is due May 22. Counselor applications are due May 22 as well. These will be available at a later date. Registration form will appear in future newsletters and will be available on the Rolling Prairie website. 3

4 Information for New 4-H Families/Members The Elk County 4-H Handbook and 4-H Records Guide are available on the Rolling Prairie website. Both publications contain lots of information that will be helpful for new 4-H families/members as well as returning families/members. The Elk County 4-H Handbook tells about 4-H events and activities and provides information about different things related to the 4-H program. The 4-H Records Guide provides all kinds of information about 4-H record keeping and it includes which project sheet to use for each project. K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy Applications for the K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy are now available. The academy is June at Manhattan. Below is information about the program. For more information or the application go to: High school youth from across the nation are invited to apply for the K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy hosted by the Kansas State University Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council. The goal of this academy will be to further develop young leaders within the livestock industry and prepare them for a successful future in this field. The four-day session will focus on increasing knowledge of Kansas diverse livestock industry, as well as building participant s leadership skills. Twenty high school students will be selected to participate based upon educational, community, and agricultural involvement, as reflected through an application process. The academy will welcome students to the Department of Animal Sciences at 4 K-State and provide on-campus housing. Students will receive interactive leadership training at Weber Hall and tour K-State Animal Science Facilities. The program will also allow students the opportunity to tour businesses and organizations within Kansas livestock industry. Students will complete their experience with a team presentation competition on a current event in the animal science industry. Applications Requirements: Participants must be currently (as of January 1, 2017) enrolled in high school. Applications must be postmarked by April 1, Delegates must be able to participate in the entire academy and attend all conference sessions. Students must complete all areas of the application. The spacing of the application for responses must be unaltered and extra attachments will not be accepted. The application should be paper clipped including application form, resume and recommendation form in sealed and signed envelope. Applicants will receive an confirmation that their application has been received by mail. Please allow two weeks for review and selection after the April 1 deadline. Sponsorship: The academy is sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC). Total cost to attend is $500 per student. If selected students will pay only $50 of this fee, with the balance provided by LMIC. Students are responsible for transportation to and from the Academy and any lodging that may be needed before or after the event. Club Secretary and Treasurer Notebooks To help community club leaders and the club secretary and treasurer keep an updated and well maintained officer notebook, I am asking that these two books be turned in by April 14 for me to

5 review. I want to see what work has been done and offer suggestions or help if it is needed. Hopefully this will help these two officers keep an updated book so they are not trying to do it all in late September when they are due. Fitting and Showing Clinic for Goats and Sheep Saturday, April 8 at Longton Fairgrounds A day full of events will take place on April 8. From 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon, fitting of goats and sheep will be discussed. At noon, lunch will be provided. In the afternoon, showmanship of goats and sheep will be discussed. There will be lots of time for participants to get hands on practice and instruction. Animals will be provided for members to practice with so no animals are to be brought to the event! 4-H Fair Events Survey Enclosed is a 4-H Fair Events survey. Please complete and return to the Extension Office by February 28. If you have not completed your enrollment for this 4-H year, PLEASE DO SO NOW!! That evening, a cook out will be held. Following supper, the Teen Leaders are hosting a Barnyard Olympics for everyone to participate in. The Elk County Teen Leaders and Envy Farms are sponsoring the clinic. Conducting the clinic will be Trent Kemper and Emma Stewart. More information and registration will be in next month s newsletter. Registration will be due by April 3. Livestock Judging In the next couple of months, I will be having some judging practices and meetings. I am working on getting some things lined up. If you are interested, be checking s and newsletters for more information. These activities will be only for members who truly have an interest in livestock judging!! These will not count towards the livestock educational requirement. If you participate in judging contests, those will count, but not the practices. 5

6 Junk in a Bucket Junk in a Bucket is a new project that is being sponsored by the Elk County 4-H Council. Junk in a Bucket will be offered as a class at the 2017 Elk County Fair. The project will begin with a special enrollment that will be due to the Rolling Prairie Extension District - Howard Office by February 20, Drawings for the buckets will be held at County 4-H Club Days on Saturday, March 4, Each participant will draw for a random numbered bucket on March 4, You do not have to be present in order to participate, but you do need to arrange to pick up your bucket at another time. Ground Rules for Junk in a Bucket: 1. Pre-entry is required and will be due by February 20, 2017 to the Rolling Prairie Extension District - Howard Office. 2. Random drawings for the buckets will be March 4, Photos of each bucket will be taken. NO extra materials may be used in the creation of the project. 4. Any of the items in the bucket MAY be cut or reconfigured, but NO items may be added. 5. Items in the bucket may be welded. Baling wire may be used to connect items, but may be used ONLY to connect pieces. No extra wire is allowed. Zip Ties may also be used to connect items in the bucket. 6. In creating the project, all items in the bucket DO NOT have to be used. 7. Projects may be painted, but it is not required. 8. ALL buckets and items not used must be returned along with the exhibit to the Elk County Fair in July. All Junk in a Bucket projects will be exhibited in a special class at the fair. 9. Only 4-H ers enrolled may participate in this project. This is an individual person project; NOT a team or club project. 10. Special prizes will be awarded in the two divisions: Junior and Senior. 9 4-H Fair Events Survey Over the years, there has been much discussion about the 4-H Fair Schedule. Listed below are all the 4-H events that occurred during the 2016 Elk County 4-H Fair. Please take a few minutes and write down what day and time you would like to see these events occur on the fair schedule in This is your opportunity to voice your opinion and offer a solution, not just a complaint. The 2017 Elk County 4-H Fair will be July in Howard. So dig out your 2017 calendars and give me your ideas.
