1 May 2016 K-State Research and Extension Finney County Summer Reading Petting Zoo We need your help with the Summer Reading Program s Annual Petting Zoo at the Finney County Public Library on Saturday, June 25, Set up will begin at 9:30AM and the petting zoo will be from 10AM - Noon. 4-Hers are encouraged to bring their goats, sheep, swine, bucket calves, rabbits or poultry for the petting zoo. We would also like to have a project fair, so bring any of your projects to display and promote 4-H. 2 Page 2 ATTENTION ALL 4-Hers!! 4-H Council News Each 4-H Club should have nominated 4-H Council Representatives to attend the council meetings on a bi-monthly basis and report back to their respective 4-H Clubs. We encourage those nominated youth to be present at all meetings. 4-H Council meets on the 4th Monday in January, March, May, September, and November, unless announced otherwise. May 4-H Council Meeting is Monday, May , at 7PM in the 4-H Building Cloverbud Club If you have a child between the ages of 5 & 6 this is the time to start getting them involved in 4-H through the Cloverbud Club! Come learn about 4-H, meet some of our junior leaders, interact with other kids, participate in games/crafts, and most importantly have fun!! Our next meeting will be Tuesday, May 17th at 6:00PM in the 4-H Building For more information, please feel free to contact the Extension Office at , or Tayla at tlcannella@ksu.edu. Due to the abundance of spring/summer activities, we will resume our Cloverbud meetings in October! Photography Camps & Workshops Photography Day Camp will be held May from 8:30-11:30am each day. Sessions will take place primarily in the 4-H Building but will venture to different areas as well. Topics to be covered: camera menus, composition, frame ups, using flash, use of different modes, zoo shooting, and many more. Enrollment is limited to 20! Please register by May 15th. Forms are available at the extension office or on under the 4-H Youth Development tab, then in Events.
3 Page H CAMPS The sun is shining that means that it is time to gear up for camp! The registration date has passed for attending all summer 4-H Camps. Thank you to those who are registered to attend these three camps! We are very excited for this summer! Discovery Days: May 31 - June 3, 2016 We will be travelling to Manhattan on May 31st and returning on June 3rd. There will be 9 youth and 1adult attending this year s event. Attendees, as the event gets closer, please be on the lookout for a letter. Enclosed in this letter, you will find the travel times and details, dress code, what to pack and housing information. I look forward to traveling with you all for Discovery Days! Heart of Kansas Camp: June 8-11, 2016 We will be traveling with 39 campers and 6 counselors to Rock Springs 4-H Center on June 8th and returning on the 11th. If you are registered, please be on the lookout for a packet of information in the mail. It will have all of the travel information, what to pack, activities, dress code and housing. We look forward to having you attend camp this year! Camp Lakeside: June 9-10, 2016 We will be traveling with 9 campers to Camp Lakeside in Scott City on June 9th and returning on June 10th. This will be a very fun camp. Attendees, as the event gets closer, please be on the lookout for a letter. Enclosed in this letter, you will find the travel times and details, dress code, what to pack and housing information. If for some reason you are registered, yet unable to attend any of these camps, please let Tayla know as soon as possible. Refunds may not be an option. Finney County 4-H Foundation offers 25% reimbursement of registration fees to 4-H Camps, KS Youth Leadership, SW Youth Leadership, Discovery Days, & Citizenship in Action
4 Page 4 Livestock/Pork Quality Assurance Dates: Each 4-H/FFA youth involved in beef, sheep, goats, and swine must participate in Livestock Quality Assurance training. Swine exhibitors MUST complete their Pork Quality Assurance. There will be several dates to complete this training and you MUST attend one or you will not be allowed to show your livestock at County Fair, Kansas State Fair, or KJLS. Livestock Information Make-up date will be on Monday, May 24th beginning at 6Pm at the Finney County Extension Office. If this make-up date does not work for you, you must make arrangements prior to the event to make alternate arrangements. You may test out as an alternative to taking the class. You must be years old to test out of Intermediates or 15 and above to test out of senior division. I will administer the tests at any times. It will cover the Good Production Practices taught in the LQA/PQA classes. Finney County Spring Show We are bringing back the Finney County Spring Show. It will be held on Friday, May 20th and Saturday, May 21st. Swine will show on Friday beginning at 6PM. Sheep, goats and beef will show on Saturday beginning at 9AM. Buckles will be awarded to overall prospect champions, jackets for reserve prospect, overall showmanship, and overall breeding, chairs for reserve showmanship and reserve breeding.. Registration forms are available at the extension office or on under the 4-H Youth Development tab then under events. Finney County Spring Show May 20-21, 2016 If you plan on nominating your livestock for Kansas State Fair or Kansas Junior Livestock Show, this must be done by June 15th. We have Declaration Forms, Nomination Forms, and DNA envelopes needed for this process. They must be nominated, otherwise they will be ineligible to show at KSF/KJLS.

6 Page 6 Superintendents Wanted Finney County Fair Updates If you are interested in becoming a superintendent in one or more project areas, we would love to have your leadership for this year s Finney County Fair. 4-H and Open Class superintendent opportunities are available in the following areas: Cloverbuds, Demonstrations/Ill. Talks, Duct Tape, Educational Displays, Energy Management, Entomology, Fashion Revue/Clothing, Fiber Arts, Crops, Flowers, Foods, Food Preservation, Gardening, Models/Blocks/Legos, Pets, Photography, Poultry, Rabbits, Space Technology, Visual Arts & Crafts, and Woodworking. Become a Junior Superintendent We are currently looking for Junior Superintendents for this year's Finney County Fair! We would like to have 4-Hers present at check-in times, during judging, and to help clean up during the Finney County Fair. For livestock projects, you would help pass out ribbons, hand out or collect cards during the show. We would advise you to become a superintendent in an area that you will not be exhibiting; this is especially true for livestock projects. If you are interested, please contact Tayla at the Finney County Extension Office and let me know what areas you would like to help with. Great American Foods Contest The theme for this years Great American Foods Contest is Christmas in July. All baked goods are to be of the Christmas spirit. The Finney County 4-H Foundation will be sponsoring this contest for the 2016 Finney County Fair. There is a youth and an adult class and will be exhibited in open class. 4-Hers are welcome to participate in this contest as well. 4-H Club Fundraiser for Finney County Fair Each 4-H Club is invited to bring a basket to the Finney County Fair. We will have a silent auction of these club baskets and all proceeds for the basket will go to the respective clubs. This will be a great way to promote our 4-H Clubs and raise some money for each club. These baskets will need to be on the fairgrounds by 5PM on Tuesday, July 26th. The winners of the silent auction will be announced at the 4-H Awards Ceremony on Sunday, July 31st. Clubs, when purchasing your baskets, please do not exceed $50. Bids will begin at $50.
7 Page 7 Horse Information Horse Level Testing If you plan on attending the Southwest District Horse Show or Kansas State Fair, you will need to take Level 1 of the Horse Level Testing. You must come into the Extension Office in order for the test to be administered. Study guides are available on the Kansas State 4-H website Southwest District Horse Show The Southwest District Horse Show will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2016 in Dodge City at the Western State Bank Expo Center beginning at 9AM. Registration forms are online Southwest Spectacular Horse Show Finney County will be hosting the Southwest Spectacular Horse Show on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at the Finney County Fairgrounds Grandstand Arena. We will notify all members in the horse project when the registration forms become available. Other Horse Show Flyers are available at the Extension Office! Beacon Boosters The Beacon Boosters 4-H Club held a meeting on March 13, 2016 in the 4-H Building at 7PM. Tyler Cloud called the meeting to order. Andrew Baker acted as Secretary and roll call was name your least favorite food and 8 members answered roll call. Flag salute was led by Baylee Hutcheson and Aleah Eatmon. Under officer reports, the treasurer s report was given by Abby Spexarth. Aleah Eatmon reported that February report was printed on March 10th. Andrew Baker also gave a parliamentarian report by showing how to make a motion correctly and practiced with the club. Tammy Hutcheson and Susan Cloud gave the leader s report with upcoming deadlines/events: Bingo night reminder, Finney County Pig Sale, KLC, early tagging & showmanship clinic, and spring show concessions. Birthdays for February include Aleah, Baylee, and Miles. The club voted to make People to People the club project. Baskets will be placed in the Extension Office to collect food for the Emmaus House. Aleah Eatmon and Baylee Hutcheson gave a project talk on growing vegetables, then let each member plant their own. Music was led by Baylee and Aleah. Next month s meeting will be held on April 11th at the 4-H Building beginning at 7PM. Hosts are Spexarth s and Standley s. ~ Beacon Boosters 4-H Club Club Corner
8 Page 8 Sherlock Strivers Club Corner (cont.) The Sherlock Strivers 4-H Club met Sunday, May 1, at Holcomb Elementary. 13 members and 3 new members answered roll call with what would you buy with a million dollars? There were 8 adults present. After the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H pledge, officer reports were given. Under old business, the club discussed upcoming livestock tagging dates, to be held on May 9 & 10. Members were also reminded of other dates and deadlines, such as camp registration and horse ID papers on May 1, Shutterbugs on May 7, and The Finney County Spring Livestock Show May Under new business, the club discussed our banner for the fair, and also came up with a plan for our club tour, to be held in June. Members were also asked to come up with possible new ideas/designs for the club s t-shirts. These will be discussed at the June meeting. 4-Hers were also told about the Public Library Petting Zoo, to be held June 25. They are encouraged to bring their animals to share with the public. After adjourning, members put together goodie bags for chemotherapy patients. The next meeting will be June 5 at Holcomb Elementary. Kourageous Kids The January Meeting of the Kourageous Kids 4-H club was held on January 10, Fifteen members attended and answered roll call with the question What did you do for New Year s Eve? The club had two knitting project meetings for members to learn how to knit. Amanda Currie had a birthday and we sang happy Birthday to her. We had a skit committee report for 4-H days and members were to think about their favorite project to be used in the skit. Recreation was led by Sidney Schiffelbein and we played Simon Says. A reminder was given to bring donations to the bake sale at the Honor Flight. The club ended the meeting by filling 150 Valentine bags with candy for Casa. Kourageous Kids Members prepared valentine bags
9 Page 9 Club Corner (cont.) Kourageous Kids The February Meeting of the Kourageous Kids met on Valentine s Day. Roll was answered by 14 members to the question what do you love most? Sixteen people attended the knitting project meeting held at the Library. Happy birthday was sang to Rosemary Colson, Alex Bennett and Liz Marcy. The parliamentarian's report, given by Ashfield Cook, was explaining different ways to vote. Council Rep Shelby Irsik gave fundraising ideas for the club, and reminded us the enrollment deadline for new members is May 1 st to enter in the 4-H division at the fair. Recreation was led by Rosemary Colson and the game was called stationary.
