2 2 October 13-17, 2015 UNION COUNTY FAIR 2015 Union Daily Times Fair both traditional and different this year UNION COUNTY The 107th Union County Fair will be a mixture of tradition stretching back more than a century and new and unusual entertainment. The first Union County Fair was held in 1908 and like that first fair more than a century ago, this year s fair will offer activities and events that are no longer a feature of fairs in other counties in South Carolina. We re proud of the fact that we have kept the traditional fair events and shows like our livestock shows, Union County Fair Association Director Paul Winters said. We have Home Economics, we have Agricultural Products, and we have a Flower Show. People can proudly enter their canned goods, produce, and even some of their homemade items and receive ribbons and monetary premiums. Winters said its continuation of such traditional mainstays of county fairs makes the Union County Fair unique in South Carolina as the state s other counties no longer have such things as livestock shows at their fairs. While it continues the traditional aspects of county fairs that have been a part of it since 1908, Winters said the fair will also offer the people of Union County some new and unusual entertainment. We try to bring in entertainment that our community and our local patrons don t get to see often, Winters said. This year we will have The Incredible Hypnotist who will be one of our main attractions, the Wild About Dinosaurs strolling act and the rodeo. This will give the community something different to enjoy. The fair website (unioncountyscagfair.com) describes the fair as the biggest event of the year for Union County. 4 4 October 13-17, 2015 UNION COUNTY FAIR 2015 Union Daily Times Livestock show still a staple in Union County UNION COUNTY While other county fairs no longer feature them, livestock shows will be as much a part of the 2015 Union County Fair as they were at the 1908 Union County Fair. This year marks the 107th year the Union County Fair has been held and while things have changed a great deal since the first one more than a century ago, the fair continues to offer events that, while once a mainstay of county fairs, are no longer offered by other counties in South Carolina. We are one of the last county fairs that have livestock shows, said Anne Brock, Clemson Extension 4-H Agent. Some of our surrounding counties have shows with certain animals like a goat show or beef shows, but they don t have all the animals like we do. Brock said the first four nights of the fair will feature livestock exhibits some of which will continue throughout the week We are one of the last county fairs that have livestock shows. Some of our surrounding counties have shows with certain animals like a goat show or beef shows, but they don t have all the animals like we do. Anne Brock Clemson Extension 4-H Agent and other livestock/agricultural activities. Monday night will be when all the poultry and rabbit exhibits will come in, Brock said. That will be the entry day for the poultry and rabbits as well as the canned goods, baked goods, ag products, and sewing and crafts. They will need to be in between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The poultry and rabbits will go on exhibit Tuesday and will remain on exhibit until Saturday morning. That includes the 4-H Pullet Project. On Tuesday our Dairy Show will be at 6 p.m., she said. Then on Wednesday at 4 p.m. we will have our Pullet Showmanship Show. This will be just for 4-H Pullet Project Participants. Each will have to bring in one of the chickens they raised through the project and show it before a judge. At 6 p.m. on Wednesday will be the Sheep Show. Thursday will feature a tradition that Brock says goes back at least 15 years. On Thursday we will have 5K Day for all the kindergarten children, Brock said. They will go through stations and learn about farm animals and gardens. They will learn how about how food goes from the farm to the table. At 6 p.m. on Thursday there will be the 4-H/ FFA Meat Goat Show. On Friday at six o clock there will be the Beef Show. Chickens will be part of the 2015 Union County Fair Oct The fair will feature a 4-H Pullet Showmanship Show. The fair is the last county fair in the state to have a livestock show featuring a wide variety of animals.
