If you have already made an account for this year, you need to use the same account. If you have not used the fair online entry system this year, you will need to make a new account. Make sure to get your fair entries entered early and don t wait until the last minute. The online entry system can be found at No late entries will be accepted. If you need to use a computer to complete entries, stop by the Extension Office between 8am- 4:30pm and we will help you. If you have problems with the entry system, contact carrollcountyfairentries@gmail.com Enrollment Carroll County 4-H enrollment was due on May 1 st to be eligible for the 2017 Carroll County 4-H & FFA Fair. If you did not get enrolled on the 4-H Online enrollment system by May 1 st you WILL NOT be eligible to exhibit at the 2017 Carroll County 4-H & FFA Fair. 1

2 UME Volunteer Training Would you like to be a University of Maryland Extension Volunteer? Are you helping out at club meetings with projects or activities? Do you have parents in your club who have expressed an interest in being a 4-H volunteer? All adults who are working within our program should go through this training. The next UME training will take place on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 6pm. Registration is required so please call the Extension Office at if you are interested in the next training. Volunteer Council Meeting The next Carroll County 4-H Leadership Council Meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 13 th at 6:30pm at the Extension Office. We would love to see you attend! You will receive updates on the county program and this is your chance to provide your feedback to us! Everyone is welcome to attend including senior 4-H members. Carroll County 4-H Fundraiser Don t miss out on a chance to support Carroll County 4-H on Saturday, July 1 st at Westminster Island Green Family Fun Center. July 1 st is Carroll County 4-H Day and the county program will receive 50% of gross sales from Mini Golf, Batting Park and Golf Range from the entire day. Make plans now to get out and spend the day with your family or gather your friends and go have some fun! 2016 Project Records Done Project Records have been judged and returned. Incomplete records were returned to 4-Hers. If your animal record is recorded as incomplete, you will not be eligible for the 2017 CC 4-H/FFA Fair Livestock Sale. The deadline to resubmit records has passed. Scholarship Opportunities The Maryland 4-H Foundation offers over 40 scholarships for senior and college-aged 4-H members and alumni. Go to mymaryland4hfoundation.com to apply online. Scholarship applications are due June 1 st. Don t forget about the binder full of scholarships you can find at the Extension Office. There are a lot of scholarships to look through so don t miss out on an opportunity to find some money for college! 4-H Member and UME Volunteer Cards 4-H Cards WILL NOT be included in fair packets. They WILL be mailed directly to each family household. Cards will be mailed towards the end of June, please be on the lookout. When cards are mailed, an will be sent to all 4-H families who have provided addresses to us. Notify the Extension Office before Friday, July 21, 2017 if you have not received your 4-H member/umd Volunteer cards. NO CARDS WILL BE GIVEN OUT FAIR WEEK. NO EXCEPTIONS!!! 2

3 Teen Council NEW FORMAT The Carroll County 4-H Teen Council is holding another Google Hangout online meeting Sunday, June 4, All 4-H teens are invited to attend this virtual meeting from the comfort of their own home. Connect to learn more about what Teen Council has planned for this summer! WHAT: Carroll County 4-H Teen Council Meeting WHEN: Sunday, June 04, 2017 TIME: 7:30-8:30 p.m. LOCATION: Online via Google Hangout WHO: All 4-H teens (age 12-18) are welcome to attend RSVP to let us know you are coming by clicking here! Once you RSVP, we will send you the link to join the Google Hangout. It is easiest to participate if you use a Gmail account. UPCOMING MEETINGS Teen Council will also hold a face to face meeting at the Carroll County Extension Office on Thursday, June 15 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet other 4-H teens, participate in a leadership activity, and start planning fun events for the fall. Do you know which are the healthiest? Which are the best for you? What is the best buy for your money? Then make plans to support the Maryland 4-H Foundation on Thursday, June 22 nd as Maryland 4-H goes to Camden Yards. More information on tickets can be found with the attached flyer. 4-H Show Attire for Livestock Exhibitors The Carroll County 4-H/FFA Fair will be using traditional show ring attire to show for All FFA members will wear their standard FFA attire. Males Khaki or green trousers no shorts are permitted. All shirts are to be white, have a collar, and be able to be tucked in. All exhibitors must have a neckpiece (green or black) Females Green, Khaki skirt or slacks no shorts are permitted. All shirts are to be white, have a collar, and be able to be tucked in. Shirts may be sleeveless for girls but no tank straps or spaghettistyle straps will be permitted. No shirts exposing bare midriff. Sleeveless polo style or button-down shirts are allowed. All exhibitors must wear a neck piece (black or green). 3

4 Junior/Novice Livestock Exhibitors If you are a junior 4-H member, or if you plan on showing a new species of livestock in 2017, make plans to attend a livestock workshop. This is a requirement for the livestock sale if you plan on selling an animal at the 2017 Carroll County 4-H/FFA Fair. Your last chance to attend a workshop is June 24 th by attending the Meat Goat Workshop or Junior Stock Show. Dairy Judging If you have an interest in learning more about dairy cattle, then take the opportunity to attend Dairy Judging practices. Dairy practice dates: Tuesday, June 6th 7:30 Hoff's Tuesday, June 13th 7:30 Lease's Tuesday, June 20th 7:30 Dell's Please call or text Kelly Zepp if you have questions or need directions Horse Jamboree The Maryland 4-H Horse Jamboree will be held July 7-9, 2017 at the Patuxent 4-H Center. Jamboree is being hosted by Calvert County this year. Remember that the Horse Communication contest will be held at Jamboree, so start working on those speeches and demonstrations! Registration for Jamboree is now open at Maryland.4honline.com. Remember that you must have a chaperone to attend overnight. Livestock Judging If you have an interest in learning more about livestock, then don t miss out on livestock judging. You will learn how to evaluate different species from cattle, sheep and swine. This a great opportunity to learn more about your livestock projects or to participate even if you don t have livestock, but are interested in animals. 5 Junior Stock Show If you are a Clover that might want to try showing a pig, goat or sheep, or a 4-Her that needs more practice before this year s county fair, mark June 24 th on your calendar. The annual Junior Stock Show will be held at High Ridge Farm in Manchester. Animals will be provided that day for those of you that need them for practicing. A clothes swap including white shirts, khakis/green pants and boots for sale or trade will also be held. Please see the Rules and Entry form attached to this Tribune. Questions, call Candy Cole Meat Goat Workshop There will be a Meat Goat Workshop on Saturday, June 24 th from 10am-12pm at the Conaway Farm (Falling Leaf Farm) in Sykesville. Please RSVP by June 19 th via . If you have any questions, please contact Jim or Stacie Conaway, Meat Goat Superintendents at fallingleaffarm@gmail.com If you are new to Meat Goat exhibiting, please the Conaways and they will add you to the list of exhibitors and make sure you receive information and updates. Poultry Judging Eggs, live birds, and meat, oh my! Have you ever wondered what the USDA standards are for grading eggs, production hens, and ready-to-cook birds? At poultry judging practice, you'll learn how to look inside an egg without ever breaking the shell and what it means if a bird has yellow pigment on the bottom of her feet. In addition to learning about all things poultry, you will also get the chance to develop better public speaking skills through delivering oral reasons. Hope to see you there! Contact Sarah Giordano: sarahgiordano@verizon.net, or Glenn Haines. Poultry and Rabbit Exhibitors At the end of the May Tribune, you will find a Poultry, Rabbit and Cavy Registration Form. This form is required for those exhibitors wanting to exhibit at all county and MD State Fairs. Please fill out and return to the Carroll County Extension Office by Friday, June 16 th. If you have questions, please call the Extension Office. Cattle and Swine RFID Tags Anyone who is planning on showing cattle or swine will need to make sure you have official RFID tags. This is a new requirement for 2017 and ALL cattle and swine entering shows in Maryland, must have RFID tags to obtain health papers. A fact sheet from the Maryland Department of Agriculture can be found in the April Tribune on how to obtain those tags. If you have questions on RFID tags for exhibiting, please contact the MDA at

6 Quality Assurance Program If you are a new member or have moved to a new age group (Junior to Intermediate, Intermediate to Senior), you are required to take the Online Quality Assurance Program this year. The program is online and required for ALL 4-H members showing beef, dairy, swine, sheep, goats, horses/ponies, poultry, rabbits and alpacas/llamas. The website to complete the program is: You must register and complete this program if you are going to show at any 4-H show. The website is available 24 hours a day. If you have questions, please contact Becky at Computers are available at the Extension Office, if needed. Quality Assurance must be completed by Friday, July 21 st to be eligible to show at the fair. 7 Paper Retriever Don t forget that we have Paper Retriever containers at the Extension Office for everyone to recycle their paper products. A new company has taken over the recycling and we can now take more items. Any paper item (excluding food products) such as paper, cardboard, phone books, books and magazines can be dropped off. Don t forget, this serves as a year round fundraiser for the Carroll County 4-H Program. Pass the word to help us with our fundraising efforts. Rocket Competition Update Rocketry Competition updated this year to officially include CLOVERs! It is that time of year again. The 4-H rocketry program is growing. Last year, we launched over 100 rockets the weekend before the fair. The new 2017 rocket catalogs have just arrived, and we have plenty of copies! There are group rates available if clubs would like to make purchases from the catalog, along with other discounts. You can find a variety of supplies that you will need when building your rockets for the fair. Make sure to read the rules in the Rocketry Section on the Carroll County 4-H/FFA Fair website. Some notable rules are no plastic fins and no prebuilt kits. To place orders or if you have any questions, please contact Carol Viney at MrsViney@yahoo.com or call As in past years, after the competition, we will have a fun launch. This means that we will launch rockets that may not be allowed in the competitions such as double stage rockets and also rockets built by parents or others. It is a FUN FLY! Bring out whatever you like and we will launch it (weather, time, and SAFETY permitting). Club Leader Updates Newspaper Articles When sending in an article/picture to the newspaper, please send it to Becky and we will get it on the Extension Website. Ag Center Building Use When reserving a building with the Ag Center, please follow these steps. 1. Call a 4-H Educator. 2. Give a reason you need the building. If we can accommodate you at the Extension Office, that will be our first option. 3. If an Ag Center facility is still needed, the 4-H Educator will make the reservation for your club. Club News! 8 Fun Schooling Horse Show 2017 Carroll County 4H & FFA Fun Schooling Show: Saturday, June 10, 2017, 8 AM at the Carroll County 4H Riding Rings - $7 per class or $35 for the whole day/division Don t miss out on the opportunity to get your horse off the farm before the CC 4H & FFA Fair! Join us for a combined English and Western schooling show on June 10. Novice (walk/trot), Junior and Senior divisions will be offered. This show is open to all 4H and FFA members currently enrolled in a horse project. More information is attached to the May Tribune. The next meeting will be Tuesday, June 13 th immediately following the Volunteer Council meeting. At this meeting, we will be reviewing Annual and Interstate Conference for 2017, as well as fundraising suggestions. We certainly hope to see each of you there! The county chapter is also charged with preparing a basket for Annual Conference to be raffled off after lunch. If you are interested in assembling an item for Carroll County, please let me know! You do not need to be attending Annual Conference to assist as I am more than happy to transport the item after our June 13 th meeting. CC 4-H/FFA Fair Everyone is welcome to participate in Fair Board meetings held at the Extension Office. The next meeting date is June 28, 2017 at 7:30pm. Too Many Ribbons? Bring them to the Extension Office or Fair Board and we will recycle them! 2017 Fair Theme Learning today, Leading tomorrow with the Carroll County 4-H & FFA Fair New Electrical Outlets in Shipley The Ag Center and Fair Board are replacing the electrical outlets that used to drop down from the ceiling. They will be replaced with electric towers and we are looking for anyone who would like to make donations towards the purchase of the new towers. If you would like to learn more about this endeavor, contact Bill Stem or Cindy Speak. Fair Fundraiser The fair will once again be selling tickets for a lawn tractor or cash prize. They are holding 2 contests for families and 4-H Clubs to sell tickets. The 3 clubs (small, medium and large) that sell the most tickets will win a pizza party and the family that sells the most tickets will win a gold sponsor parking pass. Tickets must be turned into the fair s information booth by July 29 th to be eligible. 9 Indoor Building Updates - I conclude my series of articles highlighting the new classes or class changes for Indoor Department at the 2017 County Fair. This month I will cover the Foods Department which includes Canning, Cookies and Fudge, Cakes and Pies, Baking for Special Needs and Decorated Cakes. The Canning section will be under the recommended updates from the State. These are listed under Rules and Regulations in the Canning Section. Butter is a new canning class. No jars will be opened during judging. Don t forget to enter those items you made at County Canning Workshops. The 2017 Cookie of the Year is Cereal Confetti Cookie. The recipe is listed in the Fair Catalog on the Fair website. The 2017 Cake of the Year for juniors will be Blueberry Cinnamon Coffeecake. The 2017 Cake of the Year for intermediates and seniors is Lemon and Molasses Spice Marble Cake. Once again Red Velvet Marble Cake is a cake class. The recipes for these three cakes are listed in the Food Dept. under the Cake and Pie section in the Fair Catalog on the Fair website. The Cake Auction is not a department that you pre-register for. Instead, you register the food item that will possibly be sold in the Cake Auction. Based on merit, cakes are chosen to be in the Cake Auction. Cake discs will be available beginning June 1 at the Extension Office. Any questions, contact Sandra Stonesifer, Indoor Supt. at Hers are encouraged to give Informal Demonstrations during the fair. There is little preparation and this gives 4-Hers a chance to complete a demonstration for their communication section of the project record sheet. Informal demonstrations need to be pre-registered with the other fair entries. Plants/Flowers--Anyone exhibiting in the Plants/Flowers Dept. for the 2017 County Fair will not be required to complete a 2017 project record sheet to exhibit Plants/Flowers at the 2018 County Fair. Garden Products--Everyone entering this department must have a completed project record sheet. This sheet must be pre-registered. It is section 1 in this dept. This completed record sheet must be brought to the fair with your exhibits. Bicycle Contest The Bicycle contest has been moved to a new date of July 15 th at the CC Ag Center. If you or your family have market sheep or market goats tagged in your name for 2017, you need to bring them. If your animal is unavailable and you need to use a lamb or goat at the Stock Show, please call to confirm availability. All sheep and goats must have current Maryland Health Papers for this show.
