Mikey Hughes is helping wi State 4-H You Council duties and helping prepare for e Emerald Circle banquet. She will be receiving a state 4-H Scholarship at e Emerald Circle Banquet. Congrats Mikey! The Woydziak Family will host a student from Japan is summer. Landon will be e host broer. Lexi Straub, Emma Mayhill, Paige Koehn, Katelyn Reh and Aiden Noblitt will be serving as Camp Counselors at Heart of Kansas Camp. Thank you for your time and your service! Congrats and Good Luck! Sam McGinnis, Parker Smi and Katelyn Reh will be heading to Nebraska e last week of June. Fundraiser Garage Sale - Saturday, June 3 from 8 to noon at e 4-H Building to raise money for 4-H National Shooting competition. Parker Smi and Katelyn Reh are accepting donations of items (no cloes or shoes, please) on Thursday evening, June 1 from 6-8 p.m. at e 4-H building on 281 Highway. Leftover items will be donated to Goodwill or Salvation Army at e conclusion of e sale. Thank You to Jensen Associates Inc and Farmers Mutual Insurance for helping sponsor e members at e small bore rifle national shoot. Thanks also to Pheasants Forever to eir donation to Barton County 4-H Archery! Fair Questions?? This newsletter will hopefully help answer some questions about e upcoming Barton County Fair and our summer activities. Please read it carefully and feel free to call if you have questions. The fair and everying at comes wi it, can be confusing for first year parents, so please just ask. No question is a silly question! We will do our best to help find an answer. Pre-Entry Particulars We realize it is sometimes difficult to get to e Extension Office during regular office hours. We will be at e office on Thursday, June 15 until 6:00 pm to answer questions about fashion revue entry forms and fair pre-entries. If any 4-H leader or junior leader would like to spend an hour helping wi is on June 15 please contact e office. Pre-entry forms for fair entries can be turned in Pick up fair labels for foods, cloing, etc. Purchase photo matte boards and a plastic covering for $1.50. Pick up BBQ tickets to sell Photography project help for photo project questions and directions on mounting. 4-H is more an just e Fair The Fair will be here before we know it! As parents and leaders it s important at we remember e goal of our children s involvement in e 4-H program. We hope ey gain so much more an a blue ribbon! The county fair is an opportunity for an independent evaluation of e project skills a member learned rough completing a project. This helps to maintain e focus of what we are trying to accomplish in 4-H, which is develop blue ribbon kids, not just blue ribbon projects. Find e time to visit wi members about what ey have learned about each of eir fair entries and help em celebrate eir accomplishments regardless of e color of e ribbon ey receive at e fair. While entering and displaying a project at e county fair is e traditional meod of public affirmation, ere may be oer means of exhibitions such as club tours, a visit to e older residents at a Heal Care Center or even helping oer members at e fair. 2 Scholarship Application Due Dates 4-H members who are high school graduates and have not received is scholarship before, are eligible to apply for e 4-H Holding Board Scholarship. st Applications are due June 1 to e Extension Office. A reference letter is required from a 4-H leader or oer adult who knows your leadership skills. (Not Berny for local 4-H scholarships ). Print e application off at This scholarship must be handwritten by e member. There is also a scholarship in memory of Carl and Evelyn Miller. Applicants must be a current or former Barton Co. 4-H member enrolled (or will be enrolling) as a freshman or sophomore in college. The application st is posted at and due June 1. Pre-Entry Forms Due June 15 The updated fair book is online at If you would prefer a printed fairbook, ose will be available at e Extension Office at some point. You can also print out individual 4-H departments of e fair book and an entry form at Look under 4-H and You and en under 4-H Fair Misc. You can print e entry form, find e class numbers in each department and scan and it to bwalton@ksu.edu or drop it by e office. Included in is newsletter is a 4-H Entry form. Please use a separate entry form (found on e fair website) for open class entries. All 4-H projects at you plan to exhibit should be pre-entered including fashion revue, horse, livestock showmanship, etc. Pre-entries are due by June 15. We do allow a 24-hour grace period. You can deliver em to e Extension office, place your entry form in our drop box after hours (e gold mail slot just to e left of e Extension Office front door) or it to bwalton@ksu.edu The online fair entry system is open and will close at midnight on June 16. Late entries (received after June 16 ) will forfeit your fair premium money for ribbon placings. The computer generated entry tags will most likely be available for pick up when you bring your money for BBQ tickets back e last week of June. You can attach em to your entries before you arrive wi exhibits on entry day. Help Needed for Fair Set-up How many volunteers does it take to run a successful county fair? The answer is: We need Everyone s help! Check wi oer club members and make sure your club is represented. There will be fairboard members working at e Expo grounds on Saturday e 1st and ey will mainly be moving large items (showcases, etc) There will also be people working on Sunday. If you can find time to help, please come out! Everyone s help is needed on Monday, July 3rd at 5:00 p.m. In Expo II, display cases need to be cleaned, tables need to be covered and our younger members can be involved wi is. Please bring a staple gun (wi your name on it!) to help cover tables and decorate. 4-H BBQ Ticket Sales Included in is newsletter is a letter about ticket sales. Please stop by e office and pick up a packet of BBQ tickets to sell. Tickets and money must be returned to e Extension Office by Friday, June 30. Your club will get credit for e tickets you sell IF ey are turned in by 5 pm on June 30. NO grace period on is deadline! There are ree bonuses for selling tickets: 1) Your 4-H club will receive 50 cents for every ticket sold. Each club will decide what to do wi eir proceeds. (Some give camp scholarships.) 2) The proceeds from e BBQ helps pay for transportation to 4-H camp, Achievement night, 4-H Day expenses, and many oer 4-H activities. 3) The top 3 sellers in e county will be recognized at e Achievement Celebration. Sign up to Help wi e BBQ All 4-H families are asked to help make is major fund-raising activity a success. At e 4-H Council meeting we had clubs signed up to work a shift in an certain area. We do not have anyone helping clean up!! Any volunteers? If you cannot help during your club s time, please step up and help at anoer time. Dog Meetings The information on e number of meetings needed for each member to show has been posted. Check Facebook group Barton County 4-H Dog Club for updates.

3 BBQ Ticket Sale Blitz - June H Council voted to try someing new is year. A BBQ Ticket Sale Blitz will be held on eier Friday evening June 2 or Saturday morning, June 3 in Great Bend. Hoisington and Ellinwood clubs may also set eir time and choose e spots to sell. Clubs signed up for e following places in Great Bend: Busy Buzzers - Big Dillons on Friday e 2nd TLC Twisters - True Value on Saturday e 3 rd GBCS - Orscheln s Sharpshooters - Nor dillons SBJW - Suerlands Each club will need to contact e place of business and agree on a time for e club members to sell. This will be a great opportunity for our members to practice eir salesmanship skills and visit wi members of e community about e 4- H BBQ and e events at e Barton County Fair. The Extension Office will prepare money bags wi some change and tickets but please contact us. The club will receive credit for sales made. Fashion Revue Committee A few years ago, we started a rotation of clubs to share e responsibilities of making Fashion Revue a great event. This is a great opportunity for members and leaders to share eir talents and put on a well planned public Fashion Revue. Thank You to Eureka Homesteaders for sharing ideas. We will be sending e notes from at meeting to e families from EE and EH clubs who are enrolled in e Cloing Project, but OTHERS are welcome and appreciated. We will also have a Fashion Show on e Free Stage on Friday, July 7 at 6:30 pm in Expo II featuring constructed or purchased garments. Small Bore Rifle Program This is for members who completed e first 6 weeks of air rifle is past fall. Practice started at Kiowa Gun Club at 7 pm. Questions? Contact John Reh or Scott Smi. Barton County leaders have applied to host a small bore rifle qualifier and an nd archery qualifier on Saturday, July 22. Fair Schedule All 4-H entries come in and are entered on e first day, Wednesday, July 5. The Foods division and Arts and Crafts are judged on e first day. There will be a schedule sent to all foods members and e judging will begin at 8:30 a.m and depending on e number of exhibits it could run until 1 p.m. The arts and crafts judging schedule will also be sent and will begin at 10:30 a.m and will continue until about 3:00 p.m. We will plan to have e judges take a lunch break during arts and crafts judging. We will also have e Cloverbuds exhibits judged on Wednesday at noon so e younger 4-H members do not have to wait for eir ribbons. REMEMBER: Fiber arts, which includes quilting, stitching, weaving, etc. is judged on June 28. You Rally at e Fair The You Rally to be held e first night of e fair on Wednesday, July 5, 6:30 p.m. It will be held in Expo III. Everyone is invited! All 4-H members and parents are encouraged to wear eir H T-shirt. This event is sponsored by e 4-H Ambassadors. American AgCredit will be serving hamburgers and hotdogs prior to is beginning at about 5:15 or so. This is for 4-H families and all e fair helpers. Please be sure and tell em THANK YOU!. Photography Division Photo matte board is available from e Extension Office for $1.25 and is 11" x 12.5". If you have matte board from e past, please measure it because e size changed a few years ago. ALSO - We have Clear Bags to fit e photo matte board available for $.25. The bags have a place to hang it at e top and a sticky strip at will allow e bags to be sealed at e bottom. The photos are to be mounted across e narrow (11") dimension wi e top edge of e print 1" below e top of e matte. The sides of e print will be equal distance from e sides of e matte. The matting directions are e same for e photo classes at have ree 4 x 6" pictures.

4 Leadership Opportunities There are many opportunities for our teen leaders. Do you enjoy working wi younger members? Are you creative and artistic? Do you like working wi a team to make an event happen? We have someing for everyone! Please call and let me know how you would like to help Help as a junior leader for a project - foods kids, rocketry kids and livestock kids have all asked for help. Would you help a younger 4-H member in your club? Help at fair set-up and fair clean-up. Get a group of friends togeer and have fun while you work. Be a junior superintendent or an assistant for one of e fair departments. It s fun and you ll learn a lot. Volunteer to help wi Day Camp on June 15.. Deadlines for State 4-H Livestock Shows June 15- DNA for sheep, goats and swine due for e KSF and KJLS July 15-Entry deadline for e Kansas State Fair for Beef, Sheep, Goats and Swine. Attention sheep and goat exhibitors: Rules for sheep and goat regulations at e county and state fair are: They must be identified wi an official USDA scrapie premises ID tag. Please ask for additional clarification if you have questions. The scrapies tags should come from e person you purchased e animal from. Livestock Pre-Entry Note For e county fair, eartag numbers must be included on e entry form when you pre-enter. If you plan to bring two of e market swine you weighed in, en please list class 2999 twice and list e ear tag number of each animal. Livestock Skillaon Thursday The Livestock Skillaon contest will be in conjunction wi e Ag Challenge of Champions on Thursday July 6 from 11 am until about 2:00 pm. Stations will include livestock equipment, breed identification, quality assurance exercises, livestock feeds, and oers. All livestock members are encouraged to participate. Sale of Champion Guidelines In order to sell rough e Sale of Champions at e Barton County fair, e 4-H member must: Attend Livestock Quality Assurance training. If you were not able to attend eier training offered, en you need to get information from Alicia to take a PQA test online at pork.org. A 70% score is necessary to pass e test. Present complimentary BBQ tickets to your buyer from last year. You will receive two BBQ tickets for each animal you sold last year. These tickets were paid for wi money subtracted from your 2016 check. Please visit e person who purchased your animal, ank em for eir support, present em wi e BBQ tickets and an invitation to e 2017 sale, and have em sign e receipt slip. BBQ tickets need to be delivered by June 15! 4-H members are selling BBQ tickets and businesses need to know ey are receiving tickets from you. They are to be hand delivered because ey really want to see your SMILING face. Put your best foot forward and go visit em and invite em to e 2017 Sale of Champions. Attend at least five regular monly 4-H club meetings during e year. The club secretary s roll call record will be checked by your Club Leader and documented on e Eligibility requirement form for attendance from August 2016 ru June Identify livestock wi proper ear tags and have em weighed in on or before e official weigh-in dates. Wi your intent-to-sell form you must turn in a medication form for medications at have been used since e animal was purchased. The intent-to-sell form must be turned in wi-in one hour after your last livestock show. IF you only have a market hog, e form is due by noon on Thursday. If you have market beef, your forms will be due Friday evening in e fair office. State 4-H Wheat Expo Join us for e annual Kansas 4-H State Wheat Expo on Thursday, August 3 rd in Wichita, KS. The wheat show is open to all 4-H family members. Preregistration is due by July 24. There are several contest divisions in which to enter. There are divisions for a physical sample of wheat at require a bin run sample of wheat. These samples are sent in early for testing. If you would like more information about e sample to send in, give us a call.
