The Firelands Gazette The Official Newsletter of the Firelands Peacemakers Prairie Dawg -- Editor-In-Chief November 2014 The President's Corner: Thank everyone for a great shooting season at Firelands. We will see you in the spring. Happy Holidays to all! If anyone has any suggestions for next season please let the board know. Feel free to call or any of us. Continue to keep Redbud and Mongo in your thoughts and prayers, send cards and s this winter to help keep their spirits up. Stay warm, get your guns sparkling clean, and your ammo loaded. Old Iron Hip A Holiday "Hello" From Old Dan Cotton: Wish all Peacemakers a Happy Thanksgiving, A Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year! Old Dan Cotton, SASS #27125 Firelands Peacemakers - Ohio

The TG's Agenda From Sixgun Scotsman Howdy Peacemakers: Sorry the agenda wasn't ready for you to vote on during the October meeting. I was hunting bambi last weekend and couldn't be at our last shoot of the year. Here is the agenda: I don't think there is anything to big to deal with this year. I can't attend the January convention and will be sending the vote via proxie. With nothing controversial on the ballot I will show you how I will vote. I believe that I will properly represent the majority of club members. If you disagree, please me. 1) Should we institute the following standard for all style/costume categories when breaking them down by age? The regulations for the base category will be applied first; THEN the age limits. Reasons to do so: "any legal revolver" is the criteria for the basic AGE-based categories...which doesn't apply to FRONTIERSMAN (requires percussion ignition); CLASSIC (which has a caliber restriction), and GUNFIGHTER (which requires FIXED sights)...as does DUELIST Other categories have restrictions regarding rifle model/caliber and additional equipment regulations....senior Duelist currently being the only anomaly specifically listed as such (i.e. a "subcategory" of SENIOR instead of Duelist) Example: (Senior GF would be a Gunfighter 60+ years old, subject to Gunfighter category regulations) My Vote -- YES *************************** 2) Should we change Senior Duelist to comply with that standard? Shooting STYLE = #1 determinant Shooter's AGE = #2 consideration My Vote -- YES, consistency and treating everyone the same across the categories.

3) Should we officially acknowledge the shooting category "Frontier Cartridge gunfighter" as a SASS sanctioned/recognized category? The category would follow the firearm and ammo guidelines of the current "Frontier Cartridge" category and follow the shooting style and holster requirements of the current "Gunfighter" Category. The main reason to add FCGF to the list of "officially recognized" categories is that it brings the BP categories up to par with the smokeless ones in regard to available shooting styles. Smokeless = Open/age-based (two-handed); Duelist/Senior Duelist/Classic (onehanded); Gunfighter/B-Western (both hands) Black Powder = Frontier Cartridge (two-handed); Frontiersman/Frontier Cartridge Duelist (one-handed); FCGF (both hands). My vote -- YES, this has been voted on by our club in the past. ****************** 4) Should the MSV penalty for retrieving a dropped or ejected round be removed if done SAFELY? i.e.: 24. Ammunition dropped by a shooter in the course of loading or reloading any firearm during a stage or "ejected" from any firearm may be SAFELY recovered; or replaced from the shooter's person or other area as required by stage description. If the round is not fired it is counted as a missed shot. Keep in mind that current rules allow retrieval of dropped/ejected rounds after the shooter completes the stage...with NO RESTRICTIONS or PENALTY related to where the ammo may have landed or whether the shooter has firearms "in hand" or not. Too much room for interpretation by the T.O. so it is too subjective. It is safe the way it is currently in the rule book and not much of a problem. My vote -- NO

5) Should conflicts on costume based shooting categories ("B"- Western Men's & Ladies and Classic Cowboy/Cowgirl) Costuming requirement determinations be relegated to the Costume Contest personnel/judges? Where the competitors can battle it out in front of a panel of judges instead of bringing costume issues to the attention of Range Masters and Match Directors to decide if a shirt or boots are in compliance with the rules. My vote -- NO, leave it up to each match director how they want to handle it. Most shoots don't have a Costume Contest personnel/judges. It requires even more volunteers. ******************************** 6) Should the Category of Grand Dame have the name changed to "Golden Girls"? A petition was circulated with quite a number of signatures stating that the name of the category was too stuffy. My vote -- YES, I'm glad that they are shooting with us. They can call themselves what they want. Scotsman Holiday Greetings From Hershey Barr Greetings Peacemakers: The 2014 Shooting Season is over & I want to thank y'all for coming... I'm thankful that you elected me Trustee and I hope to make a good one. For now, let's be thankful for the year we've had and the Holidays to come. Stay warm this Winter, and we'll see you at Firelands in the Spring. --Hershey

Saturday, November 15 was a cold and blustery day. Despite the early Winter weather, Firelands held our last monthly shoot of shooters braved the elements, and the result was a fun time for all. Scores: 1. Sixgun Seamus -- Senior 2. Swiss -- Senior 3. Campcreek Skinner -- Silver Senior 4. Hershey Barr -- 49er 5. Shotgun Chavezz -- Senior 6. R. S. Dancer -- Senior Gunfighter 7. Kit Colleen -- Lady Duelist Sweepings From The Dawg's Barn: Well, the outdoor shooting is done for The Firelands November shoot was the last outdoor shoot of the year. Tusco schedules shoots during the Winter months unless it is too miserable to shoot. Keep your eye on their Website: The Shenango River Rats shoot indoors in Niles, Ohio on the 2nd Saturday and last Thursday. If I hear of any impromptu shoots, I'll send out an to all you peacemakers. So...time for those Winter projects. Mending leather, thoroughly cleaning your guns, reloading, gunshows, etc. Next Spring, we'll do this all over again! See ya on the range. --Dawg

Aliases -- Sixgun Seamus #94002 and Cayenne Kay #96415 Rye's Cowboy Couple Interview: Categories -- Seamus shoots Senior category and Kay bounces between Lady Wrangler up to Lady Senior. She wants to try Ladies Frontier Cartridge. Occupations -- Seamus is an Account Manager with Coca-Cola in Akron. (41 years) Kay is assistant director of Nursing at Chapel Hill Community in Canal Fulton. Hobbies -- Needles to say we both enjoy CAS. We are both Life Members of the NRA. We enjoy traveling as much as we can in the United States. We go to the NRA Convention every year and will be going to our second SASS convention this coming January in San Antonio. Seamus enjoys photography, keeping both of us supplied in ammo by reloading in quite a few calibers, and off highway travel with 4WD. Seamus has been involved with the Boy Scouts for 50 years as a Scout and as an adult leader. Scouting has been good to me and I hold the District Award of Merit, The Silver Beaver award and the Order of the Arrow Founders Award as well as having been able to travel to and participate in many national events. Both of my sons are Eagle Scouts. We built our own log house in 1978 and still live there near East Canton. Goals in SASS We look forward to doing some travel in the next few years and shoot at different clubs around the country. We would like to shoot at Winter Range and End of Trail someday and shoot at as many regionals around the country as we can. My personal goal is to hit that evil tall circle shotgun target in the saloon at Firelands on the first try every time. Kay wants to try the dark side next year and shoot Frontier Cartridge. Drivel We will celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary in November. We have three grown children, 2 sons and a daughter, all married. We have one grandson from my oldest son Matt and his wife Sarah and another grandson from my second son Andy and his wife Amanda due in December. My daughter Krista just got married to Nathan Butler this October. Prior to Cowboy shooting, I was lucky if I could get Kay to come out and shoot.22 s with me at least once a summer. I started shooting CAS in July of In 2013 I wanted her to come and try CAS and hoped to get her out once or twice a year. Her first shoot was at Tusco in July 2013 with Sage Chick as her Posse Marshall. Sage Chick helped and encouraged her and later I was able to enroll her in Shamrock Sadie's ladies only Doily Gang clinic at Guns of August in She ended up shooting the entire GOA as her third match ever. Something clicked and now she shoots with me most weekends. She really enjoys CAS and we have a set of steel targets in the back yard that we both practice on. I really enjoy every aspect of this game, especially our Cowboy friends and love the fact that we can do this together. It only took 38 years to get her started shooting, but I ll take it. I am an RO II and plan to keep up with refresher courses every couple of years. I would like Kay to take at least an RO I course

Prairie Dawg's Little Known Western Facts The Demise of The Dalton Gang The Coffeyville, Kansas bank robbery The Dalton Gang was a group of outlaws in the Old West during They were also known as The Dalton Brothers because three of its members were brothers. However, not all of the gang members came from the Dalton family, and not all of the Dalton brothers were in the gang. The gang specialized in bank and train robberies. During an attempted bank robbery in Coffeyville, Kansas in 1892, two of the brothers and two other gang members were killed. Emmett Dalton survived to be tried and convicted. He served 14 years in prison. Bob Dalton had ambitions. He would, he claimed, "beat anything Jesse James ever did rob two banks at once, in broad daylight." On October 5, 1892, the Dalton gang attempted this feat when they set out to rob two banks: The C.M. Condon & Company's Bank and The First National Bank on opposite sides of the street in Coffeyville, Kansas. They wore fake beards but one of the townspeople recognized them. An employee of one of the banks delayed them by convincing them that the safe was on a time lock, and could not be opened for another 45 minutes. With the delay, word got out that the bank was being robbed. Residents armed themselves and prepared for a gun battle. When the gang exited the banks, a shootout began. Three townspeople were shot, and Town Marshal Charles Connelly was killed when he ran into the street after hearing gunfire. Marshal Connelly returned fire and died while killing one of the gang. Bill Power, Bob Dalton, Grat Dalton, and Dick Broadwell. They are pictured above in that order. Emmett Dalton received 23 gunshot wounds and survived. He was given a life sentence in the Kansas penitentiary in Lansing, Kansas, of which he served 14 years before

being pardoned. Emmett moved to California and became a real estate agent, author and actor, and died in 1937 at age 66. Speculation arose that a "sixth man" had been holding the gang's horses in an alleyway and had escaped. The sixth man was believed to be Bill Doolin, but it has never been confirmed. Bill Doolin, "Bitter Creek" Newcomb, and Charlie Pierce, none of whom were at Coffeyville, were the only members left of the Dalton Gang. Years after the robberies and his release from prison, Emmett Dalton would say that Deputy US Marshal Heck Thomas was a key factor in his gang's decision to commit the robberies. He said Thomas kept relentless pressure on them. They hoped to make a big score from the banks and leave the territory for a while, to escape Thomas' heat.
