The NC Junior Beef Roundup was held at the Jim Graham Building in Raleigh on June 3-5. The breed heifer shows were on Saturday, June 4. Bob May from Mineral Point, Wisconsin was the judge for the weekend. There were nine Simmental heifers shown by seven exhibitors. Judge May selected the Senior Champion Heifer, Cox s Cora C502 as his Grand Champion Simmental Heifer. Cora was exhibited by Travis Cox of Richlands, NC. This heifer is sired by Flying B Cut Above. The Reserve Grand Champion was TX Merry Me shown by Thomas Smith of Pleasant Garden, NC. Merry Me is a daughter of Card Uproar 49Y and was the Senior Calf Champion Heifer. The Reserve Senior Calf Champion Heifer was TX Serendipity shown by Hayden Campbell of Lowesville, VA. This heifer is a daughter of WS Prime Beef Z8. The Junior Champion Heifer was Circle A Lila 522C shown by Catherine Harward of Norwood, NC. This heifer is a daughter of CWT Burn Notice Y12. The Reserve Junior Champion, Indian Creek Rose, was shown by Logan Murphy of Trenton, NC and is sired by Remington Red Label. The Reserve Senior Champion Heifer was EJS Miss Top Choice 505C shown by Cara Smith of Pleasant Garden, NC. MCM Top Grade 018X sired this heifer. Cara Smith also exhibited the Grand Champion Simmental Cow/Calf Pair. The cow was SFI/ Mid Am Classy Lady sired by AFI Classic Z251 with a February bull calf at side. The NC Bred & Owned Champion also went to Travis Cox with Cox s Cora 505C. Bailey Durham of Danbury, NC. was selected from among everyone at the Roundup to win the NC Junior Beef Sportsmanship Award for being the most pleasant and helpful person in the barn. Congratulations to all these youth!

2 P a g e 2 N C S A N e w s & V i e w s WNC Junior Beef Spring Fling The Western NC Junior Beef Spring Fling was held in Fletcher on April 16. This year they held a Percentage Simmental Show as well as a purebred Simmental Show. In the Percentage Simmental Show, Andrew Meier exhibited the Grand Champion with MCF Miss Snapchat, an April yearling heifer. The Reserve Grand Champion was exhibited by Bailey Durham with Raven, also an April yearling. In the purebred Simmental Show, Emily Ivey exhibited the Grand Champion Simmental Heifer, RS Cierra 952C. This heifer was a February yearling. Another February yearling from the same class, AK/NDS Christal s Fizz, was selected as the Reserve Grand Champion Simmental Heifer. Fizz was shown by Maddie Smith. Congratulations also goes to Bailey Durham and Autumn Knight, two NC Junior Simmental Association members who placed very well in the other contests at the Spring Fling. Both of these juniors from Stokes County placed in the top ten in the Skillathon and the Livestock Judging contests. Way to go, girls!!! These breeders are members of the American Simmental Association and have the leading number of registrations, including fullblood, purebred and percentage Simmental cattle in the year The first breeder on the list registered the most cattle and then in descending order. For North Carolina: Fred Smith Company Ranch in Clayton, Chase Cole Livestock in Clinton, High Ridge Farms in Albemarle, William Pyle in Franklinton and Massey Farms in Burlington. Most Popular Bulls Every year the American Simmental Association publishes a list of the fifty most used bulls according the progeny reported in Total Herd Enrollment. These bulls had progeny born in the year The number one bull used was Mr NLC Upgrade U8676 with 2,703 progeny. This bull is followed by Mr Hoc Broker with 1,413 progeny. The third bull in the list is the first halfblood bull, W/C United 956Y with 949 progeny. The first red Simmental bull on the list comes in at number six, WS Beef Maker R13 with 580 progeny. A purebred Angus bull, SAV Final Answer 0035 comes in at number 14 with 445 progeny. The majority of the bulls on the list are still purebred Simmental bulls, but fourteen of the bulls are halfblood or three quarter blood bulls. There are four purebred Angus bulls on the list: SAV Final Answer 0035, SAV Brilliance 8077, SAV Bismarck 5682 and Hoover Dam.

3 BBQ GRILL RAFFLE The NC Simmental Association Board of Directors decided that this year the association would again raffle chances of winning a gas grill along with four chances to win a $50 gift certificate to various steakhouses, such as Outback Steakhouse and Longhorn Steakhouse. We thought this would be a great way to promote BEEF by winning a grill for it and offering chances to go out and eat steak at a nice establishment. This will appeal to everyone and will give ticket buyers FIVE different chances to win. The drawing will be held at our annual meeting on Friday, September 2 in Union Grove at Shuffler Sale Facility.
