1 Hello all, OSU Jefferson County Youth Development 4-H Newsletter June 2014 Volume 33 Issue 4 Jefferson County 4-H offers learning opportunities in leadership and life enriching experiences within our diverse community. Participation helps develop character in a positive environment. Inside this issue: Page 1 Message from Jon Page 2 Jefferson County 4-H Calendar and other announcements Page 3 Announcements and Skills Contest results Page 4 Swine, Sheep and Goat Weight Info. Oregon State University Extension Service offers educational programs, activities, and materials without discrimination based on age, color, disability, gender identity or expression, genetic information, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran s status. Oregon State University Extension Service is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are nearly through June and that means that fair will be here before you know it. Hopefully things are going well for you and your projects. As fair gets closer, so do the all-important due dates. It is your responsibility as a 4-H member to make sure that all the requirements have been taken care of. With the year flying by, it is important that you do not let due dates fly by as well. Jefferson County 4-H held the annual tractor safety training June at the rifle range. This year we had 13 youth participate and pass the training. Youth from the tri-county area participated in the home study course and finished with the knowledge, skills and driving test. We want to thank everyone that helped to make this a very educational event for the youth of Central Oregon. We also want to thank Ag West, and Pape dealership for the use of the tractors. With the support of the community we are able to help the youth in our area fulfill a requirement for working with tractors on a farm or ranch. OSU Summer Conference registration has closed and this year Jefferson County 4-H has 10 youth that will be attending. There are three new attendees along with seven that have attended prior years. Participants will be on OSU campus for four days attending leadership related classes. This is a great opportunity for youth ages 7-12 grade to meet new people and build on their leadership skills while having fun. If this sounds like something that you would like more information about for next year call the office. Youth that have swine projects, if you want to weigh your animal let me know and we can make arrangements. The weights for hogs are still the same as last year pounds. Although pigs were not weighed in for the possession date tagging, it is still very important that you pay close attention to their weights. If you have any concerns about your animals current weight, please do not hesitate to call and take advantage of this opportunity to weigh your animal. As I said in the beginning of this letter, being responsible for the requirements is up to you as the 4-H member. Responsibility is one of the six pillars of character. Being responsible is to be accountable for your choices. These choices can be anything from following through with a presentation or finishing a job that you have started. Build your character and show that you are responsible by finishing the requirements that have been set forth. Good luck with all your projects at fair! See you soon Jon
