3 4H Online Blasts From time to time the State office will be sending s directly to the 4-H members. It is the easiest and most effective way to communicate important State events and requirements. We know that not everyone particularly enjoys the extra s and there have been requests to be unsubscribed. It is important to know that if you do that, you would not receive any re-enrollment s or information the County office sends directly to you. Please do not unsubscribe. Meat Quality Assurance All 4-H members in breeding and market beef, sheep, swine, goats, poultry, rabbits, dairy animal and horse projects must complete Meat Quality Assurance training the first two years they show livestock, and then again when they change age divisions. You may attend any MQA in the area; be sure to sign in and complete the quiz so your county will know you attended. The hands-on learning stations will be used again with changes in the stations. This is a come and learn-by-doing training that will take approximately an hour to complete. Parents and leaders are strongly encouraged to attend. Livestock Judging Have you ever wondered what the judges were looking for as you watched a livestock show? Would you like to make better decisions when selecting your 4-H livestock project animal? 4-H Livestock Judging is an exciting way to learn more about livestock selection and improve your speaking and reasoning skills while having fun and making new friends. Being involved in all aspects of 4-H offers lifetime benefits that really do contribute to a person s knowledge and abilities as an adult. Far beyond learning how to accurately evaluate both breeding and market animals, judging strengthens public speaking abilities and gives youth more confidence in their decision making skills. Additionally, like other competitive youth programs, there are scholarship opportunities that allow graduates to attend junior and senior colleges of their choice to compete on livestock judging teams. During a contest, youth rank several classes of four head of livestock including beef, sheep, swine and goats. Individually, each contestant analyzes the animals and decides how he or she thinks they should be placed and then marks their card accordingly. Following the placing of the classes, the youth then give oral reasons for their placing to a judge. Livestock judging members improve their analytical, reasoning, speaking and communication skills, all of which are valuable tools they can use throughout their entire life. At contests and workouts, members meet and make new friends they will keep for a lifetime. We have leaders interested in helping/ coaching youth. If you are interested, contact your extension agent to express your interest. The sooner the better, as practices will begin early in March. Horse Judging Practice Horse Judging Coach, Trish Leone will be starting practices with an orientation on February 8 th at 6:30 pm at the Otero Extension Office. Regular practices will be held at 6:30 pm on the first and third Wednesdays starting in March. Horse judging is a fantastic opportunity for all youth involved with or interested in horses to build their knowledge, reasoning skills, and public speaking abilities. Catch-a-Calf Program Crowley County 4-Hers, Kallie Stovall and Tach Brewer, had successful Catch-A -Calf experiences. They participated in the Catch-A-Calf program at the 2016 National Western Stock Show. After successful catches, they received their calves in May, cared for them, and then took them to show at the 2017 National Western Stock Show. At the stock show, Kallie received 6 th in the Market Class, 14 th in Production, and 6 th in Showmanship. Tach received 5 th in the Market Class and 8 th in Showmanship. This year, there was one successful Otero County 4-Her that participated in the 2017 Catch-A-Calf program. Congratulations to Kaysa Kurtz! More information regarding the Catch-A- Calf Program: The Catch-A-Calf program is sponsored by the National Western Stock Show. The Catch-A-Calf Program is a great opportunity designed to promote youth development and understanding of the cattle feeding industry. Youth are encouraged to manage their projects from the mindset of commercial cattle feeding. Applicants must be between the ages of 12 and 18 to apply, and also enrolled in 4- H at the time of application. Successful catchers must have adequate facilities available to house their steer as they are responsible for the care, feeding, and handling of their animal. The contestants enter the arena with a rope halter and no more than a 10 ft. lead, catch a calf, place the halter on the head of the animal in the usual way, then lead the calf to the gate. Successful contestants then receive their project calf in May and immediately start with it as a 4-H project for exhibit at the next National Western Stock Show. Once each month from May to December, that are required to write a letter to the sponsor of the calf. They are required to complete a National Western Catch-A-Calf record book. These calves will then be shown and sold at the National Western Stock Show. Cake Decorating Classes See what it s like to work in a real bakery and learn decorating techniques from Geneva of Sweet Indulgent Creations Bakery in Rocky Ford.
