3 Page 3 County Corner Madison County Poultry PROJECT INFORMATION FROM SUPERINTENDENTS Please Contact Joe Dietz, or Tim Rogier, to inform if showing birds in Jr. or Open classes. 4-H members showing in open at the County Fair need to have their bird(s) tested. 4-H birds will be judged in a tent Rules: All poultry is to be tested. Cats Cats are to be brought to the show in a personally-owned cage. ATTENTION: Earn parking passes for Madison Co. Fair Attention 4-H members---madison Co. Fair Board is requesting that 4-H members help with fair clean up tasks prior to the County Fair in order to receive parking passes. Each 4-H member is to provide 4 hours of Co. Fair community service to earn 2 passes. Zachary Paul won Top Sr. Operator at the Unit 18 4-H Tractor Driving Contest on June 5 in Carlinville at the Macoupin County Fairgrounds. Zachary is a member of the Alhambra Morning Glories. DON T FORGET TO DO AN ENTRY FORM FOR SUPER SHOWMANSHIP IF YOU PLAN TO SHOW IN THAT CLASS. This is open only to high school 4-H members only and you must be able to show at the State Fair if selected. Entry forms can be found: UPCOMING INFORMATION/DATES Secretary & Treasurer books are due September 15, Please make sure all of the meeting minutes are included and signed in the Secretaries books and that all of the Treasurer books have 5 (five) signatures (4-H Club Treasurer, 4-H Club Leader and 3 (three) Fiscal Review Committee members who are not to be members of your club). 4 Page 4 County Corner Madison County MADISON COUNTY 4-H CLUBS, PIN OAK PROGRESSORS AND HOOVES, PAWS & CLAWS painting in the 4-H Barn at the Madison County Fairgrounds NATIONAL 4-H DAY OF SERVICE STORY Recently there was a storm in our area. The wind brought down branches, boughs, twigs, and a lot of leaves from the trees onto the bike trail where our family likes to walk. Our 4-H girl, Ivette, recruited her sisters (big sister Ingrid (12) and baby sister Marley) to help her pick up the debris so the bikers don't accidentally fall. Ingrid helped to bring out the leaf blower to the bike trail. The girls took turns carrying it in a backpack until we got to the area where there was a lot of twigs on the trail. They carried off the bigger pieces by hand. They swept and used the blower to move the smaller pieces into the brush on the two sides of the trail. Baby Marley was helping with lots of encouragement from mom's backpack carrier. She is 16 months and recently leaned to say, "Go, go, go!" The project was completed in 40 minutes, and we were proud to Lozowski Family from the have helped the Hooves, Paws & Claws bikers stay safe. Club.

6 Page 6 State/Regional Events Madison County Your day at the Illinois State Fair If you are selected as our county s representative at the state fair, here s what you need to know: The county office will mail you more information after our local show, as well as an exhibit tag for your project. Remove all the tags and ribbons from our local show. Our county exhibits on Sunday, August H members should plan to arrive in Springfield at the fairgrounds between 8 and 9:30 a.m. Traffic can be very busy, so give yourself plenty of time. We know that delays happen, so if you get stuck in traffic, don t worry. We will do our best to accommodate late arrivals. Once on the fairgrounds, make your way the far west side of the fairgrounds. At the Orr Building. 4-H members should drop their projects off at the table for their project area between 8 and 9:30 a.m. Then, check the master schedule to see what time YOUR conference judging begins. Everyone will have at least a 10-minute judging time to discuss your project with a judge. Return to your judging area about 10 minutes before your scheduled time. Your project will remain on display until 3:30 that day. Be sure to come back and pick it up before 4:30 closing time. If you are registered in Fashion Revue, you don t need to arrive until 12:30 p.m. Be dressed and stage-ready by 1:30. The Fashion Revue begins at 2 p.m. Come back for the 4-H Clover Celebration at 3 p.m. No projects may be removed from the judging area until 3:30 p.m. It s the rule, so follow it! If you need to leave early, please arrange with someone else from your county to pick up your project. Be sure to give them your claim ticket. There will be lots of other fun things to do in the Orr Building. NO advanced State Fair admission or parking passes will be available through the Extension Office this year. Tickets may be purchased at the gate. Limited Load/Unload passes are available from the local Extension Office to 4-H families which will allow cars to enter through Gate 8 (or other gate if that is closed) and drive to the Orr Building to drop off exhibits or people. You will need to present your admission tickets for anyone in the car upon entering the fairgrounds; then the driver will need to leave through Gate 9 immediately after drop off, GET THEIR HAND STAMPED FOR READMISSION to the fair, and then re-enter the fairgrounds through the gate for which they have a parking pass. You MUST have a regular parking pass to use the Load/Unload Pass. Understanding 4-H Premiums In the past, the Illinois Department of Ag has provided funds to local Illinois 4-H members in the forms of premiums (cash prizes) for participation in 4-H shows and exhibitions. We currently have no guarantee that those funds will be provided. We treasure each of our 4-H families and know that you make a financial investment in your 4-H project work. We hope you continue to take pride in your 4-H learning and continue to participate fully in the 4-H program. As you are aware, we have no control on the actions of Illinois government.

7 Page 7 State/Regional Events Madison County State Fair Junior Show Livestock Entries Due July 1 The Illinois State Fair sponsors a junior livestock show which is open to 4-H and FFA members only. Entry deadline is July 1 and your entries must be signed either by 4-H or FFA staff. 4-H is proud to support the Illinois State Fair in this event. All questions about the show should be directed to the Illinois State Fair. Learn more and download entry forms and click on COMPETITIONS. Win $1,000 through the State Superior Young Producer Program The Superior Young Producer Scholarship Program is offered by the Illinois State Fair to 4-H members in Beef, Sheep, Swine, Dairy, and Horses as an educational activity at the Illinois State Fair to promote youth development and personal growth. NEW IN 2017 Three $1,000 scholarships will be provided in horses and three $1,000 scholarships will be provided in dairy. A total of nine $1,000 scholarships will be provided in a combined contest for beef, sheep, and swine contestants. Contest Dates: Horse will be July 19; Dairy will be Aug. 19; Combined Beef/Sheep/Swine will be Aug. 9. The SYPA contest is open to any youth 14 years of age or older (on Jan. 1, 2017) who are current Illinois 4-H members who are enrolled in that project. Participants do not have to be exhibiting animals at the Illinois State Fair in order to participate in the SYPA contest. Entries are requested prior to the State Fair Junior Shows and available at the Illinois State Fair website. A participant may receive only one scholarship throughout their career. Further, after receiving a scholarship in any of the specie award areas, the eligible 4-H member may participate in other specie award programs in following years but will be eligible to receive phase awards only. In order to receive a scholarship, the 4-H post-secondary trade school, or advanced educational program. Be Published in Farm Credit Illinois 2018 Calendar Do you love photography? Farm Credit Illinois is looking for amazing photos showing agriculture and rural life at its best. Each photographer may enter up to five photos. Learn Deadline is Aug. 24.

8 Page 8 Regional/State Events Madison County 2018 Salute to Excellence 4-H Volunteer Awards The Illinois 4-H program is built on the work of amazing volunteers, and we look forward to recognizing our volunteers for what they do! The National 4-H Council sponsors the Salute to Excellence Award Program that targets 4-H volunteers who demonstrate exemplary service to 4-H, while promoting service through volunteerism as both an opportunity and a privilege. Outstanding local volunteers can be nominated for consideration as the 2018 Illinois Salute to Excellence Volunteer. If you are interested in nominating a volunteer for consideration, contact your extension office. The award categories are: Volunteer of the Year recognizing individuals who have served as 4-H volunteers for less than 10 years at the local, county, region, and state level. Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer recognizing individuals who have served 10 or more years at the local, county, region or state level. Nomination criteria will be available at your local Extension Office and are due to the State 4-H Office by Thursday, September 21, Teen Leaders WE NEED YOU! We are still seeking Illinois 4-H Teen Leaders to apply for the Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team! Applications are being accepted this summer for 2-year terms starting on September 1, The application is Applicants must be years of age by September 1, 2017 in order to apply. This team of 22 4-H members and recent 4-H alumni serve in a variety of leadership capacities during their tenure. They are responsible for the planning and implementation of the Illinois 4-H Jr. Leadership Conference and Speaking for Illinois 4-H programs. Members provide youth voice on several statewide committees and assist at a variety of statewide activities throughout the year. Team members also have the first opportunity to apply to attend National 4-H Conference. We will be interviewing for a minimum of six new members. Applications are due July 31 for required interviews at the Illinois State Fair. Check us out now and apply to become a member of this statewide 4-H leadership team! Everyone Loves a Road Trip!
