Not to mention; how much I am looking forward to meeting with every leader, volunteer, and child. During the short period that I have been here I have already had the pleasure of meeting a few leaders and discussing some of their great ideas for their 4-H clubs. I also will be attending upcoming 4-H meetings and I m anxious to speak with every one. Furthermore, if anyone else has any ideas or questions concerning their 4-H club or activities please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Christi Pryor UCounty Council and Leader/Volunteer Meetings U County Council and Leader/Volunteer Meetings are a great way to stay updated about County and Club level activities. These meetings are open to all Club Delegates, Members, Leaders, Volunteers and Parents involved with the DeSoto County 4-H program. The next meetings of the 2007 year will take place on Monday, March 5, 2007, 6:00 PM at the DeSoto County Extension Office. All meetings will be held on the first Monday of the month at 6:00 PM. The Leaders/Volunteer Forum discusses and plans events for the youth throughout the year. Each of the 4-H clubs is asked to send their County Council delegates (President, Vice President and two elected or appointed delegates to the council) to represent their clubs. The youth representatives are to take the news and events planned at these meetings and report back to their club at the next club meeting. The youth council will focus on what activities they would like to participate in and what new adventures DeSoto County 4-H can develop.

2 Fair News THANK YOU TO ALL THE MEMBERS, LEADERS, AND PARENTS FOR HELPING THE 4-H SHINE AT THE DESOTO COUNTY FAIR This year s Exhibit Booth was decorated by a group of members and leaders around the fair theme, which was Desoto County Fair 2007 A Tradition of Honor. Thirty eight members exhibited a total of ninety-three exhibits to make our booth shine throughout the exhibit area. The 4-H concession stand also did well this year. The stand was open for the entire ten days due to the wonderful leaders, parents, members, and volunteers. In addition, we would also like to thank Aaron s Sales and Lease for donating the refrigerator to keep our supplies stored and Winn Dixie for their donation of materials needed. A special thought of appreciation goes out to Niki Emery for her help in exhibiting the H scholarship steer. Niki placed second in the grooming contest. Mosaic Phosphates Company purchased the steer and then donated it back for resale. Not to mention, we are continually grateful to Mosaic for their generosity and support. The resale steer was purchased by Palm Automotive Group. We salute Mr. Richard Llewllyn from Punta Gorda for his support of the Desoto County 4-H program. County Events It is time once again to develop a talk on that subject that you just love to discuss. County Events is your opportunity to share with everyone your knowledge about a subject you love. County Events will be held at the Turner Center Exhibit Hall on Tuesday, April 17th. The program will begin with registration at 5:30 pm and the opening ceremonies will begin at 6:00 pm. County Events is also host to the 2007 Share-the-Fun Talent Event and Fashion Review. This is a great opportunity for the DeSoto County 4-H members to show off their talents. forms for both demonstrations and Share-the-Fun Acts are due in the 4-H office by April 9, Stop by the county extension office to pick up your forms. There will also be a workshop to exhibit how to prepare for demonstrations on Thursday, March 29 th at the extension office. Scholarships Available There are numerous 4-H scholarships available to high school seniors through various organizations. A list of these scholarships can be located on the state 4-H website, under the category of events. Moreover, DeSoto County 4-H also offers two separate scholarships to active 4-H seniors members. The Susie Brewer Scholarship is available to a 4-H member, who meets the requirements, to attend an accredited college to further their education. The Mary Rutter Scholarship is available to a 4-H member who is in financial need to attend a technical school to further their education. The Susie Brewer Scholarship and Mary Rutter Scholarship applications are due, completed, to the 4-H Office no later than Monday, April 9, No scholarships applications will be accepted after the due date. 3 TROPICANA / 4-H PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST The 4-H Tropicana Public Speaking Contest is right around the corner and this is a great opportunity for the younger kids to discover what a speech contest is all about. This contest helps children in the 4 th, 5 th, and 6 th grade, to learn how to research a topic, organize materials, acquire the ability to speak convincingly in public, express ideas effectively, and develop confidence and poise. This years Tropicana event will be held in April on dates TBA. If you re interested or have any questions please call the 4-H Extension Office (863) The 4-H Rabbit Club The January meeting was held at the Extension Office. It was called to order around 6:15 PM. In this meeting we discussed the record books, how to correctly handle a rabbit, and how to properly trim the rabbit s nails. The next meeting will be held on March 12, Submitted By: Kellie Allen The Rooters Swine Club The last meeting was held on February 6 th, During this meeting we ordered T- Shirts and the club decided to donate $ for the relay for life. We also discussed the Lee county Fair hog weigh in, which takes place on February 17 th. Lee county record books will also be due that same day. 6 State Marine Youth Ages 8-13 Shooting Sports & Sport fishing Youth Ages 10 & Older Timpoochee 4-H Center Niceville, FL Ocala 4-H center Ocala National Park, Florida This camp provides a first hand experience with Florida s marine environment from above and below the waterline. Spotfishing sessions help the youth learn about local fish and how to catch them. Other activities include snorkeling, swimming, recreational games, campfires and evening activities. All cabins are air conditioned and campers receive a T-Shirt. This camp helps teach life skills through fun, noncompetitive activities in shooting sports, sportfishing, and natural resources. ers take part in archery, rifle, shot gun, angling skills, aquatic life, tackle crafting, and many other tracks.
