1 K - S T A T E R E S E A R C H A N D E X T E N S I O N November 2017 Achievement Banquet The Haskell County 4-H Achievement Banquet will be held on Saturday, November 18th at 6:00 p.m. at the Haskell County Commercial Building. This is a night to celebrate the H year. 4Hers will be awarded for their accomplishments throughout the year. 4-H families, leaders, volunteers, and extended family are invited to attend. A meal will be provided. Please contact your club leaders if you are willing to assist the clubs in any way as they prepare for this event. Please remember this is a banquet and dress should be your Sunday best. Practices for BB will take place the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 5:30pm and 7:00pm in the Basement of the Extension Office. Practices for Air Rifle will be the 2nd and 4th Tuesday and the time will be determined. EN- ROLL NOW. Whether you are enrolling in new projects or in the same projects, you will still need to log-on and update your information. Your 4-H participation form is online again this year. Please take time to complete and make any changes to this information at this time. It is very important that we have complete and correct information when you enroll. There is a $15 fee to join 4H this year. You will be able to add projects or delete them from your list of enrollments until May 1st for all areas. Earn a top blue and you are eligible to compete at Regional Club Days. Be on the look-out for more info. VSA (Volunteer Service Application) formerly VIP Each 4-H volunteer working directly with youth in the club or county, is required to go through this screening and training process. The application is available at the office or the link listed below. Applications can be accepted at any time. Current Volunteers If you are a current screened volunteer in your 4-H club and plan to continue to do so, please complete and return your VSA Renewal Form to the Extension Office. These are available at the Extension office or can be found at (click on the Volunteer link). There is a formfillable version is available. New & Returning Volunteers Will need to add yourself to your family profile in 4-H Online. Please call the office if you need assistance! 4-H County Wide Project Leaders & Jr. Leaders Do YOU have an interest of knowledge base in a particular project? Do YOU want to become more involved in your county and help others in the process? Than we need you! To become a bonafide project leader or Jr project leader you must contact the office. If you do not contact us, you will not be considered a project leader and we will not be able to assist you. Winter Weather and 4-H Activities Our policy is that if school cancels for weather, 4-H events are canceled too. Please check our website or contact the person in charged, if you are in doubt about the status of the event. Mark Your Calendars TODAY! Haskell County fair dates are July 21-28, 2018.

3 4-H Horse ID Certificate New Instructions There is a NEW form that needs to be used for the H Year. The publication number is P1039 rev. October These forms are also available thru the Extension Office. The form MUST BE front and back of one page, not 2 pages. A standard size picture MUST BE attached. The picture should include all 4 legs and feet showing a profile of the horse with the head turned toward the camera. ALL markings must be clearly visible. Members, Parent/Guardian, Owners (if horse is leased) and County Agents MUST sign and date signature. The ORIGINAL 4-H Horse Identification Certificate MUST accompany the 4-H er. The county office and project leader may have a photocopy. 4-H Horse Identification Certificates on 2 separate pages instead of front and back Photocopies, not originals, or pictures of papers on your phone Photos of horses not attached to Horse ID certificates Not having all required signatures Photos of horses that are more than 5 years old (especially on young OR gray horses) If you plan to show at your 4-H District Horse Show or the Kansas State Fair 4-H Horse Show, PLEASE make sure you are using the correct form and it is completely filled out. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to contact your local Extension agent Horse Panorama The H Horse Panorama has been scheduled for January at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Registration and contest rules for Horse Panorama will be posted to the Kansas 4-H web site soon on the Horse Events page.

4 Kansas Junior Beef Producer Day Date Released The 2018 Junior Beef Producer Day will be held on Saturday, March 24th, in Weber Hall on the K-State campus in Manhattan. Youth, parents, and project leaders of any skill level or knowledge base are invited to participate in this program. Participants will learn about various topics related to beef production and youth projects. More details and registration information will be released soon. One of National Western s Most Loved Traditions Catch-a-Calf Contest They come from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming to compete in National Western Stock Show s longest running program of practical beef cattle management. In just over 80 years, the Catch-A- Calf Contest has awarded nearly 3,000 steers to 4-H members hailing from the western United States. The program began in 1935 when 10 boys caught 10 sponsored calves. The contest quickly caught on, and the program grew to include 52 calves by Soon after World War II, the program settled at 40 calves per year, which is where the number continues to stand today. The program is designed so successful participants catch a calf, feed it, and return with the animal one year later as a market steer. The market animals are judged on rate of gain, quality of fitting, and carcass quality. The exhibitor is judged on showmanship, their record book, and a personal interview. Catch-A-Calf contests in the Coliseum are held during the rodeo on Friday, January 12, 2018 (matinee performance), Saturday, January 13, 2018 (matinee performance) and Sunday, January 14, 2018 (matinee & evening performances). Visit Capitol Hill, government departments, historic sites, and memorials. Get a close-up view of political process through visits to Capitol Hill. Meet with the Kansas Congressional and Senate delegations to discuss legislative issues. Participate in workshops and assembly groups to learn life skills and discuss possible solutions to domestic and international problems. Interact with 4-H members from other states, learning and sharing about 4-H and other interests and issues. The Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) trip for 2018 is quickly filling up! If you are years of age by January 1, 2018 and thinking about this opportunity, please sign up before it is too late The dates for CWF are June 14-25, Registration and application material is submitted online. Applications will be accepted until January 15 or until 50 spaces are filled; whichever occurs first. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Applicants will be notified of their selection and will be required to confirm their intent to participate by submitting a $250 non-refundable deposit to the State 4-H Office by January 15. Checks should be made payable to the Kansas 4-H Foundation. Full payment is due by April 15 in order to secure your spot.
