4 P AGE 4 Attention Teens BUILD Your Leadership skills WE NEED CARTEEN and TECH WiZARD LEADERS Putnam County 4-H CARteens and 4-H Tech Wizards are looking for a few good teen leaders to assist with teaching and volunteering for these two programs. Please call the office for more details and learn what each program offers within our county. It s a great way to get service, build your leadership skills and build up your experiences for your resume. Ohio 4-H Family Guides The Putnam County 4-H Extension Office now has the 2017 Family Guides available if you would like to pick one up early and explore the 4-H opportunities before choosing your 2017 projects. You can also visit: The official Steer ID Day is scheduled for January 7, from 8:30 AM 9:30 AM. Those registering to show steers at the 2017 Putnam County Fair MUST bring the animal(s) to the Fairgrounds that morning for tagging and weighing. Entry forms are due to the office no later than December 31, Exhibitors should be on hand that day to answer questions if needed. Late entries will be charged a $10 processing fee. If you have questions, please call the Extension office at Steer forms and Bred and Fed forms are found at: If you plan to exhibit Market Steers at the Ohio State Fair (OSF), please be aware of the following change. DNA Samples will be required instead of nose print cards. OSF Steers will also need to be tagged with an EID Tag. These samples are due to the State Fair by January 15. Here is how it will work: Steer ID Day Exhibitors will need to get a Nomination Packet that includes detailed instructions on how to take hair samples and return them to OSF. You will need to contact Stacey French, at the Ohio State Fair to obtain a Nomination Packet. She can be reached at or by ing at s.french@expo.state.oh.us These packets will include an EID Tag for the steer, envelop, OSF Seal and ziplock bag for hair samples. If the animal has been to an OCA BEST show where an EID tag was placed in its ear, a new tag is not needed. The animal s existing 15-digit identification number will also serve as the animal s Ohio State Fair identification number. Be sure to clarify this when contacting Stacey. Once you have the samples taken and placed in the envelope, sealed and signed, you must obtain my signature on the envelop as well. It can then be mailed to OSF. Remember: If this is not completed by January 15, you will be ineligible for State Fair exhibit.

Please call the Extension office at to RSVP for one of these trainings in Thank you! What is a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) A VFD is a written (nonverbal) statement issued by a licensed veterinarian in the course of the veterinarian s professional practice that authorizes the use of a VFD drug or combination VFD drug in or on an animal feed. This written statement authorizes the client (the owner of the animal or animals or other caretaker) to obtain and use animal feed bearing or containing a VFD drug or combination VFD drug to treat the client s animals only in accordance with the conditions for use approved, conditionally approved, or indexed by the FDA. A VFD is also referred to as a VFD order.

NPB lois Britt Scholarship The National Pork Producers Council is pleased to announce the 2017 Lois Britt Memorial Pork Industry Scholarship, which is sponsored by CME Group and the National Pork Industry Foundation and is managed and administered by the National Pork Producers Council. Ten $2,500 scholarships are awarded to students annually who intend to pursue a career in the pork industry with hopes that they may emerge as pork industry leaders themselves someday. Attached you will find the scholarship announcement which contains detailed information on how to apply and who is eligible. Please post the scholarship details in a prime location for students to notice. Details can also be found online at We appreciate your assistance in passing the scholarship information on to all students that are interested and eligible to apply. If you would like more information, please contact me at or fixc@nppc.org.

7 P AGE 7 Q & A about the Horse Helmet Rule in 2017 All youth age 19 and under, participating in any 4-H equestrian activity, are required to wear properly fitted protective headgear which meets or exceeds current ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)/SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) standards with the chin harness securely fastened at all times while riding or driving an equine. It is the responsibility of the rider, or the parent or guardian of the youth participant, to make sure that the headgear worn complies with appropriate safety standards for protective headgear intended for equestrian use, and is properly fitted and in good condition. The Ohio 4-H Horse Program, Show Committees, Officials, Extension Personnel and Volunteer Leaders are not responsible for checking headgear worn for such compliance. The Ohio 4-H Horse Program, Show Committees, Officials, Extension Personnel and Volunteer Leaders make no representation or warranty, expressed or implied, about any protective headgear, and cautions riders that death or serious injury may result despite wearing such headgear, as no helmet can protect against all foreseeable injuries in equestrian activities. The Ohio 4-H Horse Program, Show Committees, Officials, Extension Personnel and Volunteer Leaders may, at his/her discretion, check a participant's protective headgear for proper standards. If the youth is found to be wearing unapproved, defective, or improperly fitted headgear, he/she will not be permitted to participate in riding or driving activities until proper headgear is acquired I have had a question or two about how it pertains to horse shows and riding activities on the fair grounds. Here are the answers: 1. If a horse show is an open show the mandatory 4-H helmet rule does not apply if there is no reference to following the 4-H Uniform Rules. Sometimes we see this reference on show bills (for example: "this show will follow all guidelines set by the Ohio 4-H Uniform Rules"). 2. If the show and the show bill uses "4-H" in its title or advertising (for example: 4-H Open Show, 4 -H Fun Show) then the Uniform Rules apply and helmets are required. The rule applies to: * All junior fair horse activities during fair week * Local club sponsored and conducted 4-H Horse shows * PAS Shows * AND Riding clinics on the fair grounds. If you are riding in the fairgrounds show arena AT ANY TIME you are required to wear a helmet. Senior Fair board can determine if it is appropriate to mandate the requirement beyond the 4-H requirements. Here is a link as to "what type" of helmet is approved by ASTM/SEI. This site can be useful to educate parents and riders:
