1 Texican Star SASS Affiliated September/October 2013 WHATCHA LOOKIN FER A Publication of the Texican Rangers An Authentic Cowboy Action Shooting Club That Treasures & Respects the Cowboy Tradition LET S RIDE by Yuma Jack PO Box Kerrville Let s Ride Officers Texican Rangers Champions Last Shoot Gate Etiquette Shindig 2013 Head Um Up Monthly Shooting Schedules Addresses Birthdays SASS Affiliated Clubs ADVERTISING Ricochet Firearms Longhorn Bullets Cimarron Firearms Storied Firearms Howdy, Texican Rangers! And to start I want to extend congratulations to all who came away with annual awards and a big THANK YOU to all who came out to help us celebrate our end of the year Shindig! Also a special thanks to all those without whose help the event would not have been the success it was. My hat s off to the club officers, Dirty Dog Dale, Culebra Blaze, Two Shot Tex (and his fantastic source for brisket), Sassy Hatter, Piñata Kid, Andy Gump, Old Reed, Blue Thorn, Sheriff Robert Love and Shooting Iron Miller. We had 60 shooters who were willing to brave my first attempt at a Cowboy Action Shooting match. There was a brisket lunch, corral sale, Blazing Saddles, Long Range and Quick and the Dead side matches and we still managed to stay on schedule and start the awards at 4:00 PM. Wildcat Bob and Lars Christopherson got the prizes for Long Range, A.D. Texaz and Six Goin South took Blazing Saddles and despite some surprising turns in the competition, Skyhawk Hans was the last standing at the end of the Quick and the Dead shootout. During the awards ceremony we gave door prizes to all shooters who hung around (but I wound up missing a box of 1000 Federal small pistol primers that I laid on the table next to Culebra Blaze.kidding). On Sunday, after Blue Thorn gave us some thought-provoking words at Cowboy Church, we shot the same targets as on Saturday but not in the same order. On Saturday, I was able to shoot the Line Shack stage (from the hip) clean, and in fact it was my best stage for the day, but we did not repeat the hip shooting on Sunday. I had mixed comments on the shooting from the hip but more in favor than opposed. Thanks for the feedback. We also had a Wild Bunch Match back on August 31 st. After watching the match it was no surprise that Skyhawk Hans walked away with first place in the Modern category and Best Overall. Dragon Hill Dave took the honors in Traditional and Shooting Iron Miller and Miss Cubbie captured the prizes in Ladies Modern and Ladies Traditional, respectively. Page 1 of 14

As of the end of June 2013, the club had a bank balance of $11,846. Comancheria Days 2013 generated revenues of $17,865 with expenditures of $15,992 resulting in a net gain of $1,943. I don t know anything more about the possibility of Colt s moving to San Antonio but it was announced on TV that Governor Perry has convinced Beretta to relocate from Maryland to Texas. Now that the hot summer months (June through September) are passed we will move the Shooter s Meeting to 9:00 AM starting with the October match. We will continue with that start time for regular monthly matches, at least, weather permitting, through May The upcoming match in October is the last match for this calendar year at Stieler Ranch. The Range will be closed immediately after the final round is fired. This is to allow us to shut down the range as early as possible so it can be turned over to the hunters for the season. The October match is the second match to count toward annual awards for Starting the 2014 schedule with the Sunday match after Shindig allows plenty of opportunities to qualify for an award in the category of your choice. Just remember you can only collect an award in one category regardless of how many you may qualify in. But October excitement doesn t end there. Be sure to ride to the Whoopin with the Tejas Caballeros for Cowboy Action Shooting on Saturday the 19 th and a Wild Bunch Match on Sunday the 20 th. And speaking of 2014, congratulations to the Oakwood Outlaws whose Jail Break 2014 was selected as the SASS Texas State Championship. The event will be held March It will be closely followed by the Texican Rangers Comancheria Days 2014 held on April will mark the 20 th Anniversary of the Texican Rangers as a club and the 19 th anniversary of Comancheria Days. Be sure to plan on attending cause it is sure to be a rip-snortin time for all who do. Stay cool, stay thirsty and we will plan to shoot rain or shine. Texican Rangers, let s ride! 4 GATE ETIQUETTE Please remember that the Stieler Ranch is a working cattle and horse ranch. We need to remember ranch gate etiquette.leave all gates as you found them. If the gate is open, leave it opened; if the gate is closed, open it, drive through and then close it again SHINDIG 2013 Well the week started a little iffy with some much needed rains for the Texas Hill Country but by week s end the rains had stopped, the skies parted and the sun shone brightly on the shooters at the Stieler Ranch enjoying the Texican Rangers Annual Club Shoot-Shindig As shooters arrived many headed to the blue tablecloths set up behind the original gallows to set up their wares for the Corral Sale. Soon the tables were full and spilling over onto the picnic tables and even onto clothes racks! There was lots of buying, selling, trading and bartering goin on. After the shooter s meeting, everyone headed up range to enjoy five fun stages of shooting from Mean Maggies up to High Noon. Yuma Jack took the shooters on a trip through the Old West. We were with Jesse and Frank James, Cole, Bob and Jim Younger, Clell Miller, Arch Clements, Charlie Pitts and William Stiles as they rode into town to rob the 1 st National Bank of Northfield. Then we joined up with the Earp posse consisting of Wyatt, Sherm McMasters, Turkey Creek Jack Johnson, Texas Jack Vermillion and Doc Holliday as they rode into town to conduct a door-to-door search for Cowboys. We followed Doc Holliday, after he consumed plenty of libations to get him ready to extract a bad tooth from his drinking and gambling buddy Julian Bogel, and watched him defend himself and Bogel from Ira Austin. As we left Doc we headed into Shelby County, Texas in 1844 for Helen s Defeat, let s just say it didn t end well for Helen! We ended the shoot, in Timpson, Texas in 1886 for the end of the Feud at Mitchell s Bend and like Helen at the stage before, things did not end well for the Reverend James Truitt! Congrats to our top 10 Shindig finishers: Hopalong Herbert Skyhawk Hans Kickshot Kit Carson Dutch Van Horn Dusty Leather A.D. Texaz Lefty Rhodes Wildcat Bob As the shooters finished the five stages of reliving history of the Old West, everyone moseyed over to the picnic tables and the shade of the oak trees for some good ole fashioned Texas BBQue and trimmings. A special thanks to Two Shot Tex and Sassy Hatter for the delicious brisket, always a crowd pleaser. Thanks to Annie and Block Creek Kid for decorating the picnic tables and adding the trimmings to the BBQ.beans, potato salad, bread and condiments and tea. As shooters finished up with their lunch they had a choice of a couple of Side Matches. Old Reed manned the Long Range Side Match and everyone got to come out and check their eyesight! There was some mighty fine shooting but in the end, the top honors went to Wildcat Bob for Single Shot with 9 hits and a time of and Lars Christopherson with 6 (continued on page 5) Page 4 of 14

5 SHINDIG 2013 hits and a time of for Lever Action. At the other end of the range you could find lots of fun and laughter as shooters tried their hand at riding Blazing Saddles. Everyone had a great time and some found it hard to shoot they were laughing so hard!!! Our fastest shooters ended up being A.D. Texaz and Six Goin South. As the Side Matches came to a close, everyone meandered toward the center of the range for the Quick and the Dead, aka Man on Man. If you have never tried this event, you don t know what you are missing. It is a real hoot and the traditionally fastest shooters are not always the winner of this event. You never understand the pressure of a gunfight until you try the Quick and the Dead and yes the pressure got to some. In Round One our winners were Lars Christopherson, Lefty Rhodes, Newt Ritter, A.D. Texaz, Six Goin South, Dragon Hill Dave, Kit Carson, Skyhawk Hans, Nueces Slim and Marshall Willy. After Round Two those still standing included: Six Goin South, Kit Carson, Skyhawk Hans, Nueces Slim and Lars Christopherson. Round Three saw Lars Christopherson outshooting Six Goin South and Kit Carson outshooting Nueces Slim and Skyhawk drawing the buy. As we got down to the final three Skyhawk Hans beat Lars Christopherson and for the final gunfight it was Skyhawk Hans and Kit Carson.tensions mounted, excitement was in the air and the bullets started to fly.in the end it was Skyhawk Hans who got the drop plate down first claiming the title of The Quick while Kit Carson became The Dead. It was a real hoot to watch! After the Quick and the Dead competition, everyone went back to the picnic tables and oak trees for some cobbler and ice cream. Annie was concerned about keeping the cobbler warm and the ice cream frozen. She accomplished both, maybe too much of a good thing Annie a little less dry ice next time, as no one had to worry about their ice cream dripping on them since we had Blue Bell that was solidly FROZEN!!!! Awards were presented to club members in each category along with some great shooter prizes. Everyone who shot, and stuck around, got a shooters prize.
