May 2017 Wayne County 4-H News The Link Dear 4-H Volunteers, In This Issue... Important Calendar Dates and Reminders Volunteer Trainings Camp Information Jr. Fair Office Hours Project Information NEW - Livestock Interview Judging Ways to get involved Fun Fair Flyer Find us on: OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION On April 20 th approximately H alumni, volunteers, and friends gathered for the first ever Wayne County 4-H Legacy Dinner held at the Shisler Conference Center at the OSU Wooster Campus. This event raised more than $28,000 in funds for positive youth development activities led by the Wayne County Extension Office. It was a night of fun, food, fellowship and a live auction among a group of people that are united in their passionate support of 4-H. I had the pleasure of providing remarks at the dinner to showcase 4-H program highlights and share opportunities for involvement and support of 4-H now and in the future. I was also joined on stage for remarks from our new OSU / ATI Director Dr. Kristina Boone and 4-H alumni Dianne Hange and Seth Andrews. Each spoke about their own 4-H experiences and how the organization has impacted their lives. The funds raised from the Legacy Dinner will provide support for camp scholarships for families that are struggling financially, camp counselor training, a new teen leadership development series, livestock and meats judging teams, purchase of educational technology, program supplies and materials, 4-H Club STAR Awards, and so much more. As the 4-H educator, I am delighted at the response and generosity of our community in their support for 4-H. Certified Angus Beef and Troutman Vineyards were recognized as founding sponsors of the Legacy Dinner. The McCoy Family and A. Louise McCoy Fund of the Wayne County Community Foundation made a significant leadership gift of $7,000 and were recognized as the event s platinum clover sponsor. Key businesses and families that helped make this event possible included: Cocktail Hour sponsors Troutman Vineyards (Wine and Glassware), Bowman Beverage (Beer), and Shoup Brothers Farm (Pork Tenderloin Appetizers). Dinner sponsors included: Certified Angus Beef (Beef Entrée, Design, and Printing Services), Gerber Poultry (Chicken Entrée), J.M. Smucker Company Folgers Division (Coffee), Country Daisies Floral (Table Centerpieces), The Ohio State University Shisler Conference Center and OSU Wooster Campus Director s Office. The Ohio State University, The United States Department of Agriculture, and Wayne County Commissioners cooperating. 1 CFAES provides research and related educational programs to clientele on a nondiscriminatory basis. Members must attend BOTH Skillathon and QA to show at the fair. QA Frequently Asked Questions - Answered Members taking multiple animal projects only have to attend one QA event. Members must still complete Skillathon for each animal project. Members may attend any animal clinic offering QA even if they are not taking that project. (However, it is recommended they attend their project s clinic for valuable information.) If members attended an out of county QA event (Beef Expo, OSU Swine Day ) members must send/bring in proof of participation to the Extension office by August 1st. 2 Forms Due to the office by June 1: Horse Forms Packet Feeder Calf ID Swine Breeder Declaration Market Lamb - take to weigh-in! IRS 990 e-post Cards 4-H Organizational Advisor: Remember the Extension Office will file your 990N e-post card. DO NOT submit this on your own we will be submitting for all clubs and committees.

Don t Forget: June 1st - care and possession rule: All animals exhibited must have been in the complete possession and continual care of the exhibitor on and after June 1 st of the current year. The exception is steers and market poultry; the effective date of ownership is January 1st of the current year for steers and the poultry deadlines are listed in the Jr. Fair Book and the project guidelines. Ownership of an animal will be considered lost if after June 1 st of the current year the animal has been consigned or sold through an auction or any other type of transaction, even if the exhibitor buys back their animal. Want to make a quick change to the project you are taking? - Do so by June 1st! June 1st - all project changes completed: Any project changes must be made with the Extension office (either in writing or by phone) by June 1st. This includes correcting a member s enrollment form. Projects cannot be added after April 1st, only changed within project areas below. After June 1st, no project changes will be allowed, as the State 4-H Office requires that all members have their projects selected. For an example, a member who enrolled by April 1 st with a breeding sheep, but intended to sign up for a market lamb is able to contact the Extension office and make the change. If that same member signed up for a market hog project, but intended to sign up for a market lamb, he is unable to make that change. Likewise if a member enrolled in Snack Attack! and wants to change to Star Spangled Foods (beginner to intermediate level cooking project) this is allowed. She would not be able to change from Snack Attack to Let s Explore the Outdoors. 4-H Web Resources We always welcome calls into the office to get your questions answered, but many answers are available on these websites: State 4-H: Ohio State Fair: Wayne County Fair: Wayne County Jr. Fair: Wayne County Extension and 4-H: wayne.osu.edu While you are there, check out all the other programs your Extension Office is offering! Bikes for Kids Now is a great time for your club to talk about in what community service projects they would like to participate. Approximate cost for one bike is $65.00 and they are given to local children around Christmas time. If your club would like to donate to bikes for kids, please make your donation to the Extension Office by September 30. Volunteer Trainings For returning volunteers, who didn t attend a required advisor training in February: Schedule and attend Part I of the new advisor trainings held on May 15th or May 30th from 6-7 pm or call in to schedule a one-on-one appointment with Doug. Update and complete your enrollment form and standard of behavior form and return to the Extension Office. If they do not complete these requirements by May 30th, their volunteer status will be terminated for the H year. For new volunteers, who didn t attend the new volunteer trainings in February: schedule and attend Part I and Part II of the new advisor trainings held on May 15th or May 30th from 6-8:30 pm or call in to schedule a one-on-one appointment with Doug. More details will be sent to exhibitors and Ag- Ed teachers, but please make sure members know this information. CAUTION about USDA tags in ALL sheep and goat projects - While purchasing your project animals make sure they do not have a blue slaughter only tag. This tag can consist of a metal clip tag or a plastic hanging tag that has a USDA seal or initials and reads Meat or Slaughter Only. These animals cannot be shown at the fair and will not be permitted to tag in! Clinics - Sheep Clinic will be May 9 am at the fairgrounds - QA will be offered Goat Clinic will be June 10 am at the fairgrounds - QA will be offered Feeder Calf Projects ID Forms - To show and exhibit a feeder calf at the fair, a jr fair member MUST turn in a feeder calf ID Form to the Extension Office by June 1. No late forms will be accepted! The Calf ID Form is available at the Extension Office or online at wayne.osu.edu/projectinfo Leases- Wayne County supports the leasing of feeder calves for the purpose of teaching youth responsibility, care, and giving them the tools to feed, fit, and show an animal! For youth unable to have an actual calf for their project, an option to lease a feeder calf from another producer exists. HOWEVER, visiting a calf a few times in August, does not consist of a true project and this will not be supported by the beef committee. Leasing guidelines are available online at wayne.osu.edu/projectinfo. 5

Horse Projects Informational Meeting - All horse youth, parents, and advisors are invited to a special meeting with the Horse Committee to review changes for this year, go over forms and information that will be due June 1 st, and discuss details about summer fun shows and clinics. At least one representative of each club with horse projects is required to attend. The meeting will be held on May 22 nd at 6:00 pm in the Coliseum at the Fairgrounds. Project Record Books - please remember that all youth taking horse projects must purchase the Equine Record Book as well as the appropriate project book. Every member must complete the 190R Equine Record Book and bring it with them to Skillathon. Poultry and Rabbit Projects Clinics - This year, we have planned two dates for clinics. During both dates we will have poultry and rabbit sessions going concurrently. Clinics will be from 9-11 am and Quality Assurance will be from 11 noon at both clinics. May 9 am at the fairgrounds June 9 am at the fairgrounds Rabbit Tattooing - All breeding and pet rabbits must be tattooed prior to entering the fair. To help members get their rabbits tattooed, the committee members will have their tattooing supplies at both summer clinics and by appointment. Many rabbit breeders also have the equipment and you can ask them to tattoo your animals. This should be done in the animal s LEFT ear. Market Rabbits will be tattooed during check-in at the fair. Turkey, Duck, and Chick Orders This year, 4-H and FFA members may order turkeys and ducks from Centerra Co-op (formerly Town and Country in Wooster) at a reduced Junior Fair Exhibitor rate! Turkey orders were due May 1 for May 18 th pick up. If you missed this turkey order, you will have to check with other co-ops or hatcheries for turkey orders. Duck orders will be due June 15 for pick up on July 13 th. Exhibitors are responsible for making their own orders with Centerra Co-op at the Wooster location; they will not turn in orders to the Extension Office. Forms can be found at: go.osu.edu/duckorder17 The chick peeps will be ordered by the Extension Office in June. To place the order, fill out the online survey at go.osu.edu/2017peeps by June 12th. We ask each club or chapter make ONE order, but understand individual orders may be necessary. Pick-up date and cost for a set of 12 birds will be determined once all orders are placed and bulk discount is determined. Poultry Resources can be found at wayne.osu.edu/projectinfo since there is not a resource book to supplement the record book. The old poultry project books on the website offer great resources and study materials for skillathon. Dairy Projects Clinic - The dairy committee will be hosting a dairy clinic on July 7 p.m.on the fairgrounds. Quality Assurance, showmanship, grooming and general care will be some of the topics covered. Please encourage all of your members, especially first year members, to come! Leasing animals - Similarly to feeder calf leasing, the dairy committee supports leasing of dairy heifers/cows for the purpose of teaching young people how to feed, fit, show and care for an animal, HOWEVER, visiting the animals once or twice in August so that a member can exhibit/complete at the county fair IS NOT something that can be supported. Remember Jr Fair Rules state animals must be owned or leased and in continual care of the exhibitor by June 1, Please refer to the sample leases at 4hansci.osu.edu to view the expectations for animals leased to members. 6

OOPS! Correction from the April LINK: Sheep and Swine Show Changes It was brought to our attention that the incorrect start to the Swine Showmanship was published in the link. All other publications and printed materials have the correct dates and time, the Monday Swine show will start at 7:30am, NOT 8:00am! The corrected article is below! Sorry for any inconvenience! The Monday Swine Showmanship show will start at 7:30 am and the Tuesday Market Swine show will start at 8 am. Then both sheep shows will start immediately after, but not before 6 pm on Monday for market and showmanship or 3 pm on Tuesday for breeding and Born and Raised classes. Monday, September 11 - Swine Showmanship 7:30 a.m. followed by Market Lamb and Showmanship (6 p.m.) Tuesday, September 12 - Swine Market Show 8 a.m. followed by Sheep Breeding and Born & Raised (3 p.m.) NEW! Livestock Interview Judging We ve been looking at new ways to encourage exhibitors to learn about their projects while developing essential skills for success down the road. This year livestock exhibitors will have the option to participate in a trial project interview judging in place of Skillathon. Judging will take place during Still Project judging in July (17 th ) and August (8 th ) and will consist of a one-on-one interview with a knowledgeable judge and grading of the Project Record Book. Those who wish to participate must pre-register ahead of time. We will only be taking a limited number of exhibitors, on a first-come first-serve basis. The registration window will open on June 1 at 9:00 am. Sign up is online only by completing the form at: go.osu.edu/2017livestockinterviews Please note that although you may do an interview in lieu of skillathon, your interview score will not be considered as part of the Outstanding Market Exhibitor score for Swine or Beef, or Outstanding Dairy Exhibitor in the Dairy Department. You must do skillathon in Wayne County if you re looking to compete in these programs. Exhibitors may choose to complete skillathon for one species and an interview for another. More information about Skillathon and Quality Assurance Requirements can be found on the next page. Annual 4-H Back to School Drive School is about to end for this year, but many children in Wayne County are going to be in need of next year s school supplies soon. The needs of Wayne County are beyond what any one person can do on their own, however, many hands to larger service can make a difference. The 4-H Advisory Committee is again hosting the Back to School Drive. We are challenging you to donate school supplies such as markers, compasses, colored pencils, erasers, notebooks, crayons, glue, tissues, hand sanitizer, etc. Collections can be dropped off at the Jr. Fair Office during entry form drop off hours. (July 27, 31 and August 1 from 3:00-7:00 pm). A grand prize will be awarded to the club with the most items donated per member in that club so that way all clubs have a fair chance of winning the 4-H Back to School Drive. 4-H Raise Your Hand Campaign The National 4-H Council has started a campaign for others to show their support to 4-H. This campaign is to help identify 4-H alumni and encourage their support for initiatives across the country. The campaign ends on June 30th and the states with the most hands raised wins a $20,000, $10,000 or $5,000 reward for their local programs. That money will be used by the state 4-H office to support local 4-H programs. To support this campaign, go to and fill out a simple form. It is FREE and takes less then a minute to do. Then share the link on Facebook and Twitter to get the word out to everyone! Not a 4-H alum? Just click the no, I am not a 4-H Alum option and contribute anyway. 7

2017 OHIO DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE LIVESTOCK QUALITY ASSURANCE REQUIREMENTS Again this year it will be mandatory FOR ALL Junior Fair livestock exhibitors (4-H and FFA) to attend a quality assurance program before showing their animals at the Wayne County or Ohio State Junior Fair. Exhibitors of market steers, market dairy steers, market lambs, market goats, market hogs, all poultry meat pens, and meat rabbits, lactating dairy and lactating dairy goats will also need to complete a Drug Use Notification Form (DUNF) for each of these animals. The quality assurance requirement may only be met by participating in ONE of the following: (1) Quality Assurance program in Wayne County, or (2) An Ohio industry Quality Assurance training (e.g., Ohio Beef Expo, Ohio Pork Congress, etc.). Wayne County Quality Assurance Dates: May 25th and various clinics Registration at 6:30 p.m. Training 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Fisher Auditorium, OARDC Members must attend one of these evenings or another QA training. Quality Assurance MUST be completed by August 1st. There will be one final QA Training on August 1 with a $25 fee associated. If you completed Quality Assurance at a program outside of Wayne County, proof must be sent to the Extension Office by August LIVESTOCK SKILLATHON REQUIREMENTS Participation in the skillathons is also mandatory for all exhibitors (4-H and FFA) of livestock projects who wish to exhibit their animals at the Wayne County Junior Fair. The skillathon may be completed only in Wayne County or at the Ohio State Fair. Wayne County Skillathon Dates: July 20th July 24th July 25th From 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Fisher Auditorium, OARDC Members will need to attend one of these evenings to complete the skillathon for each species of animal he/she is exhibiting. The skillathons will consist of four stations that cover quality assurance issues and one station on project records (five total). New this year, members will have the option to sign up, on a first come first serve basis, for project interview for skillathon rather then the stations. Judging will take place during still project judging on July 17 and August 8. Members will have to register for a time slot for their interview and that will be available starting June 1st. More information found on the previous page. It is ESSENTIAL that livestock exhibitors attend BOTH Quality Assurance AND Skillathon in order to exhibit at the Wayne County Fair! The quality assurance program and the skillathon will meet the Ohio Department of Agriculture quality assurance participation requirements. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated in helping your 4-H or FFA members to reach this requirement. If you have any questions, call Nicole at
