Four-H clubs are well underway and many exciting programs and activities are planned. Please share the opportunities in the newsletter with 4-H families. Have a great month! Lisa State 4-H Winners! Guernsey County 4-H Camp is June H Camp is June Ohana means Family, 4-H means Friends is the theme! Campers can expect a variety of new and traditional activities as camp counselors are busy planning another exciting camping program. 4-H camp is open to all youth, ages 8 and in 3rd grade to 13 (as of Jan.1). Registration is due June 3. Registration information is available at: or call the office for a packet. (Applications will be mailed directly to 4-H members). Congratulations to Brittaney Allen and Sydney Regan for participating in the State 4-H Achievement Award competition. Much time and effort goes into completing the State 4-H Achievement Form. These members deserve much recognition for their efforts. Only one winner in each of 24 project areas is selected. State Achievement award recipients represent Ohio at National 4-H Congress in Atlanta in November. This is considered 4-H s highest honor. Brittaney was selected as First Alternate in the Companion Animal category and Sydney competed in the Poultry category. Great job!!

2 Many thanks to clubs & individuals who have donated copy paper to the office. We are still accepting donations & can use lots of copy paper (especially white). Thanks for any help you can give. 4-H Project Reminder F our-h project work must be just that - - completed by the 4-H member for 4-H only. School wood, shop, FCS project, etc. cannot be used as 4-H projects. Four-H and FFA projects must also be separate and different. However, with livestock projects the 4-H/FFA member may take same specie breeding projects in one organization and market projects in the other. For example they can take market lambs in 4-H and breeding sheep in FFA. YAC CHALLENGE Skillathon Food Stand Wed., June 8, 2016 at 5:30 pm Crossroads Library, Cambridge Registration begins at 5 pm. 4-H members ages 8 and in 3rd grade to 18 are eligible to participate. Categories include: health & safety speeches & skits, and demonstrations & illustrated talks. There will be participation prizes for all who attend. County winners will move on to the Area & State contests. Join us for a fun evening! See our website for more details or call the office at See enclosed flyer. If your club is interested in having the food stand at the livestock Skillathon, send a letter to the Extension Office by June 1 with your club name, contact person, a list of your advisors and/or parents who have completed the OSU Extension Safe Food Handling program & test, and what you plan to sell at the food stand. Remember the Skillathon is Thursday, July 14, Agricultural Hall, Fairgrounds. Registration is at 5:30 pm with the contest from 6-8 pm. Local 4-H Youth Receive Honors at Ohio Dairy Goat Conference Jonathan Roe Warner & Bre Ann McFarland are Ohio Dairy Goat Associations 2016 Youth Ambassadors. They will work the Buckeye Classic Show in June in Old Washington, the Ohio State Fair Dairy Goat Show in July and will attend the American Dairy Goat Conference in Austin, Texas in August. BreAnn will also compete for Ohio State Fair Queen in Katelynn Tindal is the East Central Ohio Dairy Goats 2016 Dairy Goat Ambassador. Registrations are due May 13. This camp will focus on shooting sports and is open to all youth ages The classes are taught by certified shooting sports instructors and teens serve as camp counselors. Participants will select from one of five disciplines basic archery, advanced archery, rifle.22 rimfire, shotgun, or air pistol. The registration form is available at the Extension Office.

3 Junior Fair Swine Sign Up Saturday, June 18 from 8:00 am 12:00 noon at the swine barn at the fairgrounds. Members submit a form with project pig s ear notching and description. A $5.00 tag (one tag per pig) is due at this time. All exhibitors must declare where their swine project is being housed at the time of swine check-in. Three other rules to keep in mind: All market hogs must be in your possession by June 15th. Jr. Fair members can exhibit a maximum of 2 market animals. Jr. Fair market hog exhibitors must attend a county-wide Livestock Quality Assurance program by July 1 to be eligible to show their animals at the fair. Swine forms can be picked up at the Extension Office or from our website. NEW THIS YEAR Youth planning to show in Bred & Owned or Farrowed & Owned classes must complete a Swine Breeding Record Book and turn it in on June 18 with your Ear Tag paperwork, can use 4-H or FFA Recordkeeping. Those failing to do so will not be able to show in these classes. Small Animal Showmanship Clinic F our-h rabbit, poultry and goat members will want to attend, Sunday, June 26, from 5:00-7:00 pm at the fairgrounds Home of Champions. For more info contact Steven Scott, ; Sandy McCormick, ; Dave Burnworth, ; or Ron Roberson, Jr. Fair Livestock Rules are now available online at: Market Goat Weigh-In Saturday, June 4 from 9-11 am Guernsey County Fairgrounds. To show & sell market goats, members must have their wethers weighed & tattooed at the weigh-in. Each member can weigh in 3 wethers, but can only enter 2 for the fair. Order Your Broilers If 4-H members are taking a broiler project this year, they need to order the broilers from Sandy McCormick at All orders must be placed by June 1. Remember, members must have another poultry project in their possession and continual care by June 1. All Broiler project members must attend a county-wide livestock Quality Assurance program by July 1st to be eligible to show their broilers at the fair. Page 3

4 2015 Youth Food Animal Quality Assurance ust a reminder that all youth exhibiting market livestock, lactating dairy cattle and lactating goats must J attend a county-wide livestock quality assurance program. Deadline to meet this requirement in Guernsey County is July 1. There are 2 more opportunities in our county: Sat., May 21 starting at 9 am at the Swine Barn on the fairgrounds as part of the Swine Clinic. You do not have to be taking a swine project to attend the Quality Assurance part of the Clinic; and Monday, June 6 at Mid East Career Center, Buffalo. Registration is at 6 pm with the program from 6:30-7:30 pm with the QA Test offered following the General Session. Contact the office for more information. A listing of programs available in surrounding counties is available at: Livestock Skillathon July 14 N ow is the time to encourage your members to get ready for the livestock skillathon. Members should be working on their record book as soon as they have their project animal(s). Skillathon kits are ready to be checked out & make great programs for your club meetings. Flyer enclosed. AGAIN THIS YEAR 1st and 2nd place age division winners will receive banners. Learning Lab Interactive CD contains interactive practice on Skillathon topics. Available at our office. Youth can make an appointment to use the CD on our office computer. Great way to prepare for skillathon! A Market Lamb Clinic will be conducted for members from 6-7 pm. Please remind your members that all market lambs must be tagged and tattooed to show and sell at the fair. Members can tag a maximum of 3 market lambs, but can only enter two market lambs for fair. Remember exhibitors can be in the sale ring no more than 2 times for the sale of Jr. Fair livestock projects and can exhibit only a total of 2 market projects.

5 Filing Your Club 990-N (e-postcard) All 4-H clubs are required to file by May 15th for the 2015 tax year. The report is done online at: Assistance is available at the Extension Office. You will need your EIN number, legal name and mailing address of your club. Also needed is the name and address of the main advisor. Confirm the club s annual gross receipts for the year. If you receive an ERROR message STOP. Print the page. Do not call the IRS. Keep documentation of your successful or unsuccessful attempt in your club files and provide a copy to our office. This is NOT optional. ALL 4-H clubs are required to file! Camp Piedmont Wish List 4-H Camp Piedmont could use the following items for the 2016 season: Medicine cabinet supplies such as: pain relievers, fever reducers, allergy pills, allergy creams, poison ivy lotion, band-aids, ace bandages, ice packs, sponges, baggies, Dixie cups, small garbage bags, a couple small buckets, hand sanitizer, cough drops, sore throat spray, etc. Paper towels and toilet paper for the staff cabins Bath mats, hand soap Any recreational supplies such as basketballs, volleyballs, basketball nets, jump ropes, etc. Salt Fork Arts & Crafts Festival Looking for 4-H Helpers The Festival runs August at the Cambridge City Park. 4-H Clubs interested in helping with setting up the park grounds, moving tables and chairs, sitting in the student tent for security, greeting visitors, showing people around, greeting arriving artists & helping them locate their exhibit area, serving water and ice to artists, etc. should contact Tom Haugsby at or The 4-H Pool Party is July 18. 6 4-H Week Window Decorating Results Special appreciation to all clubs that helped us celebrate 4-H Week by participating in our Annual Window Decorating Contest! Here are the winners chosen by 4-H Council: Ohio Special Needs Camp 1st place: Flat Ridge Raiders (Dollar General ) The Ohio 4-H Statewide Special Needs Camp will be held June 17-19, 2016 at the Elizabeth L Evans Outdoor Education Center/Canter s Cave 4-H Camp near Jackson, Ohio. Youth will be able to enjoy traditional 4-H camping activities as well as some activities tailored to their needs. Each camper will need to be accompanied by a caregiver. Arts Opportunities for Ohio Youth at Ohio State Fair The Ohio State Fair Youth Arts Exhibition and Creative Arts Competitions are now accepting entries. The Youth Arts Exhibition is open to Ohio youth in grades Creative Arts competitions are open to youth ages 11 and up. If you are 16 or older and would like part-time or full-time work during the summer, then Nancy Snook, Camp Personnel Chair at snook.9@osu.edu for position descriptions and an employment application. Chartered 4-H clubs do not have to pay sales tax on items purchased for the group s educational purposes. If individual club members, parents or advisors purchase 4-H books they will have to pay sales tax. If the club is paying for 4-H books, no sales tax is charged.
