1 CLOVER POWER PRESS Richland County Extension Office September 2017 Special Fair Edition Richland County UW Extension Office 1000 Highway 14 West Richland Center, WI Phone: Fax: Facebook RichlandCounty4H Richland County UW Extension Wisconsin 4-H Website Richland County UW-Extension Staff Karleen Craddock Interim 4-H Youth Development Educator Adam Hady Agriculture Agent Chelsea Wunnicke Family Living Agent Sonya Lenzendorf FoodWise Coordinator Sandy Campbell Administrative Secretary Jennie Silver Support Staff Dear 4-H Families, Are you ready for the Richland County Fair!?! As you are making your final preparations, check out this special Fair edition of the Clover Power Press for set-up schedules, entry day information and more! Thank you to everyone for your patience with the new online FairEntry process this year. We hope you found the program easy to use. New this year! There will be a 4-H Food Stand at the Richland County Fair! Support 4-H by eating at the food stand located in the old VFW building. Thank you to Jill Plonka, Tony, Jennifer, Paige & Autumn Carter, Sandy Campbell and everyone who helped get the building ready for the fair! With everything that is going on during the fair, it is easy to lose focus of what is really important. In 4-H, we believe: 4-H members are more important than 4-H exhibits. Learning how to do a project is more important than the project itself. There is more than one good way to do most things. A balance of work and play is more important than winning. Every youth needs to be noticed, to feel important, to experience success and to be praised. A blue ribbon 4-H member with a red ribbon steer is better than a red ribbon 4-H member with a blue ribbon steer! See you at the fair! Karleen Craddock Interim 4-H Youth Development Educator University of Wisconsin, United States Department of Agriculture and Wisconsin counties cooperating University of Wisconsin-Extension provides equal opportunities in employment and programming, including Title VI, Title IX ADA requirements. 1

4 Animal ID & Vet Check Form The Animal ID & Vet Check Information form is required for checking animals into the fair. A completed form must accompany each load of animals brought into the Fair. While loading your animals to bring to the fair, write down the required information on the form. When the exhibitor/hauler gets to the livestock entry gate, the vet will take the form and check to make sure each animal is written down and identified. The vet will sign and keep the form which will be kept on file in the Fair Coordinator s Office. If a form does not accompany each load, the hauler will be given a form to fill out and will be placed behind loads that do have their completed forms. Also, please attach copies of any required vet inspection certificates and/or test papers as they must be kept on file at the Fair Coordinator s Office per Department of Ag, Trade & Consumer Protection rules and regulations. Certificate copies will not be returned to exhibitors. We thank you in advance for your cooperation! The form can be found online at Livestock Entry Days Livestock Entry Day on Wed., Sept. 6: Livestock (Beef, Dairy Steers, Sheep, Swine, Dairy & Meat Goats, Poultry & Rabbits) entry time is from 1-6 p.m. but animals must be on the grounds by 6 p.m. NOTE: **New this year - the Dairy & Meat Goats will be judged on Thursday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m. Thurs., Sept. 7 - Dairy Cows, Yearlings, and Calves can be brought in Wednesday but will have a choice to come Thursday afternoon from 1-6 p.m. Animal Health Requirements for County Fair Anyone entering animals in the Richland County Fair must be aware of health requirements for ALL animals. Animal health requirements are printed in the front of the Richland County Fair Premium Book. Be sure to read all requirements ahead of time! Health papers must be with the animals when they arrive on the fairgrounds. NO animals will be housed in the barns until health papers have been checked by the Fair Veterinarian. Copies of these papers must accompany the Animal ID & Vet Check Form. Overnight at the Fair Any junior exhibitor that will be staying overnight during the Richland Co. Fair MUST REGISTER at the Fair Coordinator s Office BEFORE 6 P.M. the night you will be staying. An adult must also sign that he/she will be responsible for you while you are staying at the fair. Attention Poultry Exhibitors! This is a reminder to all poultry exhibitors - have your birds tested or flock certified! Remember - all poultry exhibitors must turn in the Poultry Certification sheet along with their health papers and Vet Check In sheet on entry day of the county fair. Forms are available at the Ext. Office and County Fair Office. Remember - All birds need to have some form of numbered ID, a numbered leg band or wing band. It is the exhibitor s responsibility to have bands on their birds. Poultry Judging will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 7 in the Avery E. Marshall Building. All exhibitors need to be present for show as exhibitors will be bringing the birds to the judge. This change was made in order for the judging to be completed earlier in the evening. For more information, contact Adam Hady, Ag Agent, at the Ext. Office, or adam.hady@ces.uwex.edu. Rabbit Judging & Meeting Rabbit Judging will begin at 9 a.m. on Fri., Sept. 8. All rabbits must be tattooed in order to be eligible to exhibit at the fair. 5 Beef & Swine Project Members IDENTIFICATION POLICIES Missing Tags - if your steer or pig has lost its ID tag, you must report this to the Ext. Office, , as soon as possible. SALE ANIMALS Each exhibitor may sell only one animal. If the exhibitor has a champion or reserve, that will be their one sale animal. Base Pricing Will Be Used In Meat Animal Sale Animals in the sale will be given a base price (based on current market price) which gives buyers options. On each group of animals - beef steers, dairy steers, market lambs, market goats, market hogs, meat rabbits and poultry - a base price will be set. This price will be set by a committee selected by the Meat Animal Sale Committee. The current market price will be taken into consideration when making this base price. Buyers will have the option of purchasing the animal at full bid price and taking possession of the animal; or the buyer can pay the difference between the full bid price and the base price, with the exhibitor retaining ownership of the animal. Commission will be taken on the full bid price and will come out of the exhibitor s check. To avoid charging a double commission to the animals sold through the Meat Animal Sale at the Richland County Fair, commission on the youth marketed animals will be reimbursed under the following conditions: 1. The animal is marketed through Richland Center Equity Livestock Market or Matthes Livestock. 2. A bona fide receipt from the livestock market that includes the ear tag number of the animal. The receipt must be turned into the Richland County Extension Office by December 1 of the sale year. If you have questions about these changes or would like more explanation, please call Adam at the Ext. Office ( ). Meat Animal Sale Appreciation Meal The Meat Animal Sale Appreciation Meal will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 6:30 p.m. Social Hour, 7:30 p.m. Meal, at the White House Supper Club, Richland Center. REQUIREMENT Set-up before the Meat Animal Sale! All youth selling Beef, Lamb and Goat are required to help with setting up the show ring and chairs. Swine, Rabbits and Poultry are required to help with tear down immediately following the sale! Rule for County Fair Sheep Exhibitors Both Open and Junior Division Sheep Exhibitors are required to help with taking down pens they were assigned: **Open Class and Junior Class exhibitors are responsible for taking down and storing pens they were assigned. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of fair premiums.** Again, many hands make light work and your help in abiding by this rule will make clean-up go much faster. Thanks in advance in helping with this task. Poultry Cage Take Down at County Fair Help is needed in taking down the cages at the County Fair. To make this process go smoothly, Poultry project exhibitors must help with this chore. Sunday, September 10, 5 p.m. - Take down cages ALL 4-H CLUBS - All Poultry exhibitors should help. We definitely know how hectic fair time can be and since many hands make light work, it will go much faster with your help. Every effort to be there at the required time will be appreciated. THANK YOU S ARE IMPORTANT! Remember to send a Thank You note to your buyer and to trophy sponsors. 5
