Pre-Fair H News WOW! Fair is quickly approaching! This Pre-Fair Newsletter contains a lot of very important information to help get you through the fair. There is also a pull-out schedule of events that you may find helpful. Please take time to look over the events that affect you as some times may have changed from previous years. We will be using the same procedure this year for unloading livestock on Wednesday. There is a map included in this newsletter with the unloading route. Please look it over and if you have any questions ask your club leader or contact the Extension Office. As the fair approaches and the final touches are being made on projects and record books, it is a good time to remind everyone that the members need to be doing their own work. Limited assistance is acceptable from parents, leaders and other 4-H members. However, the majority of the work both before and during fair should be done by the member. Parents finishing their child s record books, hiring professional groomers and finishing projects for their child is unfair to that member and to the other Nez Perce county 4-H and FFA members as well. It is very important that everyone keeps this in mind. Also, when a 4-H leader signs off on your record book, they are giving their word that you have done all of the work yourself. Please don t let them or yourself down. What Does the Ribbon Awarded at the Fair Mean? Nez Perce County Fair uses the modified Danish system of judging, which is based on established standards of quality for each type of product, it does not compare one person s work to another. The judge evaluates whether requirements have been met and the degree the member s project meets the standards. Blue = Excellent work. Exceeds standards for age and experience. Red = Good work. Meets standards for age and experience level. White = Fair work. There are a few areas that could use some improvement but generally good work. Remember, if you have any questions you can contact the Extension Office and we would be more than happy to help. Lynn Craig 4-H Program Coordinator lmcraig@uidaho.edu To enrich education through diversity the University of Idaho is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and educational institution.

We will then contact that judge and get answers for you. In the past we have had instances with parents approaching judges prior to fair. The issue that could arise with members/parents contacting judges is that it may appear to show a personal bias with a judge, whether it is intentional or not.

4-H Food Booth A friendly reminder... The 4-H Food Booth at the fair is the main fundraiser for the 4-H program for the entire year. Each club is expected to work in the Food Booth and will need to ensure that all of their slots are filled at the assigned time. Art King is in charge of the work schedule and does his best to make accommodations as needed for each club. However, sometimes changes may not be able to be made. Food booth workers can be aunts, uncles, older brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors but they will need to be over the age of 18. We are happy to have anyone who would be willing to help come join us. For working a shift in the food booth, we can get that person a free day pass to the fair. If you would like to change the time your club is assigned, please contact the Extension office or Art King as soon as possible. Leaders, please remember that you are responsible for filling all of your time slot. It is not fair to the other club s helpers to have to pull double shifts because someone didn t show up. Also, please be sure that your workers come to the Food Booth approximately 10 minutes before their shift starts. Everyone: Each club is asked to bring in homemade pies to sell in the Food Booth. Please do your best to bring in homemade pies only. Fair is a busy time so ask a grandma, aunt or neighbor to help out by making a pie for you. For food safety purposes, no cream pies or pies that need to be refrigerated please. Fashion Revue Clothing members it is time to start thinking about the Fashion Revue. Registration due Wednesday, September 6. We will be having practice at the Nez Perce County Fairgrounds on Friday, September 15 at 4 p.m. Bring the shoes that you plan to wear when modeling. Do not wear the outfit you plan to model, it s not worth risking your outfit getting stained or damaged. Fashion Revue judging is Saturday, September 16. (closed to the public) 8 a.m year old and year old practice 8:30 a.m year old judging 8:45 a.m year old judging 9 a.m year old practice 9:20 a.m year old judging 9:50 a.m. 10 and under practice 10:10 a.m. 10 and under judging Fashion Revue during the fair is Thursday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. Invite your family and friends to come watch you show off your project.

4-H Home Economics, Career & Leisure Project Tips for Fair Criteria for a Display Overall Appearance should show the theme, simplicity and originality. Information should have one main idea and be easily understood. It should be eye catching (visually pleasing) and make an educational impact (teach a concept or make a point). A display should illustrate time and thought put into it and represent a major learning experience. Be sure to check the project requirements for dimensions. Foods Projects Follow food project and exhibit requirements as listed in the requirement handbook. 1. For baked products, use paper plate (plain white preferred) of appropriate size. No larger than needed. 2. Enclose plate/food in clear plastic food storage bag using a wire closure or self closure. (Plastic wrap allows food to dry out and is awkward for judges.) Recipe on card should be enclosed with food item in food bag. Place label on plate: Name, Age, 4-H Club & Project Name. 3. Make note if food items have been in freezer. 4. Exhibit number of food items according to project: 3 muffins, 3 cookies, etc. ½ cake (unfrosted) Let s Bake Cakes & Pies, ½ loaf or small loaf is acceptable, single layer decorated cake for Phases One & Two. Request score card for more information on quality. 5. Do not exhibit foods of highly perishable nature cream pies, sandwiches, vegetable dips, etc. Decorated Cakes: Covered with clear plastic cake covers or cake cover tent. You may make you own cake cover tent from a box by cutting away sides, leaving corners. Cover with plastic wrap. Check with office for directions. Clothing Exhibits Follow project requirements and exhibit requirements as listed on front of the project book or in the requirement handbook. 1. All clothing articles or garments should be on a hanger (one non-returnable hanger if possible.) 2. Pin aprons, tote bags, and scarves to hanger with safety pins. 3. All clothing articles or garments should be labeled. Baste fabric label to inside of garment not on hem. Label should include: Name, Age, Club, Project Name (loop entry tag over hanger with ribbon or twine). 4. Cover garments or articles with clear plastic bag (one that does not need to be returned.) 5. Bring project record book, project insert sheet, and any other project specific exhibit requirements. Pictures in the record book are strongly encouraged so that the judges will be given the opportunity to see the garment on the member. 6. If you did not follow the pattern guide, please circle directions not followed and note changes. Remember: Clip hanging threads. Press (avoid creases in sleeves and lapels). Garment should be clean and mended. Knitting & Crocheting Project Exhibits 1. Articles should be exhibited in a clear plastic bag, large enough to hold the articles plus your record book. DO NOT TAPE. Use wire, plastic or self closure. 2. Include in your record book the wrap label from the yarn you used. Exhibit your pattern.

Offsite RV Parking Parking of camp trailers and RV s at the City Pool parking lot across from the fairgrounds is against city code. Please do not park your trailer there. If you do, you may face a ticket and/or your trailer being towed. Educational Displays Once again we would like each club to provide an educational display to promote 4-H. Posters and displays illustrating subjects studied by 4-H ers will dress up the display areas and educate the public about 4-H. The emphasis should be on educational topics that are covered in 4-H Projects. Please avoid displays related to commercial products the 4-H Program does not provide product endorsement. You may want to consider using posters (22 x28 ) and other props from demonstrations given in your club there is no need to come up with new material if you have some already prepared. You did a great job with your demonstrations this year! Livestock members - the educational displays count towards the Herdsmanship Awards! Brand Requirements ATTENTION BEEF MEMBERS - You must have all of your paperwork (brand inspection or proof of ownership) with you when you bring your project animal across the scales at fair. If you do not have this paperwork with you, your sale check will be held until ownership requirements have been met. C.O.O.L. Statements Market animal members, please do not forget that you must have a Country of Origin Labeling statement from your producer to sell your animal. This statement must be turned into the Extension Office. Please turn it in separate from you record book. If you have any questions on whether the statement you have will meet the requirements, please contact the Extension Office as soon as possible. Market Animal Qualifying Weight Market Rabbits Pen of lbs/animal Market Poultry Pen of lbs/animal Market Lambs lbs. Market Goats lbs. Market Beef lbs. Stocker-Feeder lbs. Market Swine lbs. Float Animals Just as a reminder only bring to the fairgrounds the animal that you are planning on showing at the fair. If you weighed in a float animal, you need to make your decision as to which animal you are going to show before coming to the fairgrounds. The animal that you weigh in becomes your official exhibit. You also should have records on both animals and should have a growth chart (for Int. & Seniors only) on both animals. If you have any questions, please call.

Saturday Stock Sale Details Underweight animals do not sell at the sale. The member or their family need to find a buyer or take the animal home on Sunday. Underweights are allowed to post a for sale sign in their pen on Sunday of the fair not before the sale. Overweight animals sell at the sale at the maximum weight listed for their project, not the actual weight of the animal. Example: a swine weighing 320 lbs. will sell as if it weighs 300 lbs. Pictures: It is the responsibility of each club to take pictures of 4-H ers and FFA members for distribution to buyers. We plan to have a photographer at the sale but sometimes glitches happen and they don t always turn out. Thank You Buyer cards are available anytime in the Extension Office. Members please remember that you need to write Thank You notes to your buyer/ supporter and bring them into the Extension Office ready to be mailed in order to receive your check. Buyer Information If not already, very soon all clubs will have their Buyer Lists, Letters and Proxy Cards. If you need more materials please let me know and I will get them to you. Extra Support Cards are also available at the Extension Office. Please remember that all Extra Support Cards must be filled out and signed by the Business/Individual giving the Extra Support, and received no later than the end of the sale on Saturday, September 23. Members & Parents be sure that you do not solicit a buyer to purchase your specific animal, your child s animal or your club s animals. You are to only invite the buyers to support the 4-H Program by attending the 4-H/FFA Stock Sale. Information on the procedure to contact buyers/ businesses and the buyer lists are available in the Extension Office or from your club leaders. The 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale will begin at 4:30 pm on Saturday, September 23. Sale order will be Rabbits, Poultry, Sheep, Goats, Beef and Swine. Extra Support Extra support is money that a market animal member may receive to help support their project. It is very much appreciated with hard luck cases where the member cannot sell their animal. It can also be given to a member who sells their animal to help ensure that they have enough income to pay all of their expenses. Extra Support money can be given anytime now through the end of the sale on Saturday, September 23. Cloverbud members are not eligible for extra support. If you would like to give extra support, or if you have any other questions, please contact the Extension Office or your club leader. Cloverbuds Parents, leaders and members please remember that the Cloverbud program is non-competitive. Their memory and project books should be turned in Wednesday morning and they will receive a participation ribbon. Cloverbuds are allowed to show small goats, chickens, rabbits, and other small pets for participation. However, they can not show any animal that weighs more than them in the 4-H show.

Caught Being Good? Barn superintendents will once again have Caught Being Good coins. If you are caught being good (helping around the barn without being asked, helping other members, or just being a great 4-H er) you may receive a Caught Being Good coin. You will then be able to trade in your coin at the 4-H fair office during fair for a sweet treat generously donated by Valley Foods! Clearwater Power Company Sponsorship Clearwater Power Company is offering $20 in sponsorship for youth whose immediate family has an account or receives electricity from the Cooperative. Members who complete electricity related and/or marketable livestock projects are eligible for sponsorship. Applications are available on their website. Colorful Animals Again this year for ease during load out of animals on Sunday we will be marking all market animals with a grease pen. There are different colors depending on the destination of the animal. Don t be surprised on Sunday afternoon if your market animal has a colorful mark on it, and please do not try to remove the mark. IMPORTANT - Barns Closing & Load Out On Sunday of fair to help make load out easier this year we will allow families to remove tack and non-market animals from the barns between 3 pm and 4 pm. DO NOT remove any decorations at this time. At 4 pm all of the barns will be closed and everyone will be asked to leave the barns. Load out of animals will begin at 4 pm. The only individuals allowed in the barns will be those approved by that barn s superintendent. Once the barn has been cleared of animals and the superintendent has given their approval decorations may be taken down. If your club would prefer you can return on Monday to tear down decorations. Attention Rabbit Members - Tattoo Before Fair To try and make check in easier in the Rabbit barn - make sure that your animal is tattooed prior to fair. This can be done with a traditional tattoo or permanent marker. Be sure that whatever you put in your animals ear will be easily identifiable. Your initials and a number are a great example. Thank you in advance for your help making sure this is done before you arrive. If you have any questions, please ask your leader or contact the Extension Office.

Mandatory Sheep Shearing Pre-fair sheep shearing is Monday, September 11 for this year s fair. You may shear on your own or Martin Dibble will be at the Nez Perce county Fairgrounds from 4-7 p.m. on the 11th. Please be sure to arrive at least 20 minutes before 7 p.m. at the very latest. The cost will be $7/head, please have cash to pay for your shearing. If you will be out-of-town or are planning to shear yourself, please tell your leader so your animal can be checked or other shearing arrangements can be made. If you have questions, contact the Extension office before September 11. IMPORTANT REMINDER Fair 4-H Vehicle Passes & Parking There is no vehicle parking on the asphalt between the beef barn and the 4-H RV area. Vehicle parking in this area is a safety concern for members and the public trying to get through the area and also causes a problem with the dump trucks trying to get in and out. Families will be allowed to bring a vehicle with a 4-H vehicle pass into this area in the morning to drop off feed supplies, but you must have your vehicle removed before the fair opens or it will be removed for you. There will also not be any vehicle parking along the chain link fence between the sheep barn and Airway Ave. This area is for small trailers for livestock clubs to store feed and cleaning supplies. The barns will be bursting at the seams again this year, so your help will be greatly appreciated! There is also no vehicle parking on the grass near the 4-H RV area. Please plan accordingly when bringing vehicles to the fair. If at all possible, keep the number of vehicles to a minimum and do not leave valuables in your unlocked vehicle. Once again, there will be overflow parking on the east end of the pool on Airway Avenue. The fair office will be giving vehicle passes to club leaders to hand out one per family. Unfortunately, some people have been taking advantage of these vehicle passes in the past. Remember that these are not parking passes, they are only to allow you to bring in animal feed and supplies. Please have your vehicle out of this area before the fair opens. Leaders, you will receive the parking passes at the pre-fair Livestock Leaders Meeting when you will also receive your wrist passes. Cow/Calf and Ewe/Lamb Breeding Applications The Nez Perce County Cattle Producers and the Nez Perce County 4-H Livestock Leaders will be sponsoring one Beef and one Sheep Breeding Project. Applications are available now from the Extension Office and will also be available at the 4-H Fair Office. If you are a recipient of one of the projects, you will house the breeding animal and be able to keep the offspring! This is an excellent opportunity for all members and there is no cost for the application. Applications are DUE by 5 p.m. on Friday, September 22 at the 4-H Fair Office on the Nez Perce County Fairgrounds. The winners will be announced during the Market Animal Sale on Saturday.

Livestock Unloading Procedure SWINE MEMBERS - No unloading of swine without approval of on site veterinarian. If any animal on the trailer is deemed unhealthy all animals on that trailer will be turned away.
