2 4-H FAST FACTS 4-H Ghoulishly Good Snacks Oct 28 Participants rotated through 4 stations of snack making and left with a plate of goodies that they created! 4 4-H Achievement Night When: November 10, 2017 Time: 6:15pm (Dinner) 7:00pm (Awards Banquet) Where: American Legion Hall Carlinville (By city pool) Why: To award 4-H members, clubs, and leaders who worked hard during the H year. Meal Cost: $4.00 per person. Checks made payable to Rosie Huff. (Pay at the door or pay early at the Extension Office in Carlinville) Who: Members who are receiving an award will be notified via mail with an invitation requesting their attendance. We will also be asking that two youth from each club present an award at Achievement Night. Please watch for your invitation. Youth who are not receiving an award may attend for support, but we are limited to 200 guests. Please call with questions. 4-H Robotics Team starting soon! Please check your for more details! 10 What: Speaking for Illinois Training When: November 18, 2017 in Kankakee Registration closes Nov. 8 or when our space is full, so you ll want to act now. Cost is $12 and includes lunch. Members must be a least 14 to participate. Youth are required to attend the entire day s program (9:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) to be placed on the state roster. Participation Participate in one state or national 4-H activity or event Leadership Attended a 4-H leadership training or event at the state level Free Admission for 4-H Students to 2018 American Farm Bureau Federation In January, the American Farm Bureau Federation will host its annual convention and trade show in Nashville. AFBF is offering a special program for 4H and FFA members on Sunday, January 7 and Monday, January 8. You may wish to attend one or both days. This is a great opportunity for students to connect with farmers, ranchers and careers in agriculture from across the nation! To register, go online at: Participation Participate in one state or national 4-H activity or event Leadership Attended a 4-H leadership training or event at the national level January 13-14, 2018 Decatur Conference Center & Hotel Open to any Illinois High School Teen in Grades 9 to 12 December 4 DEADLINE Workshop sessions will focus on public speaking, watching your digital identity, social media marketing, advocating for a cause, becoming a leader, finding your leadership niche, and youth and adult partnerships. Teens need to attend in a county, club, organization or school group (Illinois 4-H ers included) and each group must be accompanied by an adult chaperone (age 21 or older). If you want to go, you need to contact the 4-H office NOW. The staff enter all the registrations for the county. Cost is $130 for 4-H members or $175 for other group members. Space is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are the only one from your area who is interested, ask your Extension office if neighboring counties have a group that you can join. ( Groups are for chaperoning purposes only; they are not required for conference work.) 11 Illinois 4-H Junior Leadership Conference February 24-25, 2017 President Abraham Lincoln Hotel, Springfield, IL For 7 th & 8 th Graders January DEADLINE Look for more information & registration on the Illinois 4-H website: go.illinois.edu/4hjlc. The Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team creates a fun, hands-on weekend that s full of 4-H educational sessions, lots of laughter, meeting new people, and learning new things! Take the mission and find the adventure - we d love to see you there! Participation Participate in one state or national 4-H activity or event Leadership Attended a 4-H leadership training or event at the state level Extension to ACES Scholarship Incoming freshmen and transfer students to University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences may apply for a NEW $2,500 scholarship. This year, 54 scholarships (two per each of Extension s 27 units) will be awarded. To learn more and academics.aces.illinois.edu/scholarships/new-students. Citizenship Washington Focus July 7-14, 2018 Registration Open Citizenship Washington Focus is for 4-H members ages by May 1, Our delegates will travel by bus or air, depending upon the number of final delegates who register. Teens explore the federal legislative process through workshops and hands-on sessions, tour historical sights and museums, provide youth voice on issues that concern them, visit federal legislative offices, and meet teens from other states. The 2017 cost to youth was $1025, with financial assistance from the Illinois 4-H Foundation. Our 2018 costs have not been finalized. 12 Outbound International Exchange Program For Ages A 4-Week Stay in Costa Rica, Japan, South Korea or Norway Dates of travel range from mid-june mid-august depending on the program. These programs enhance the 4-H program through international, cross-cultural experiences that enable young people to improve their leadership and communication skills, while increasing their international awareness and understanding. Selected delegates will be placed with a host family where they will experience family life, community activities and be immersed in the local culture of the country. With 4-H exchange opportunities, you are not just a tourist, but also a family member and expected to participate in all aspects of family and community life the program has to offer. Program costs vary depending on the country and estimated airfare. Scholarships are available to provide financial assistance to selected delegates. States 4-H will provide orientation and travel manuals to aid in delegate preparation. Delegates will be assigned to an adult chaperon who will travel with the group and will be placed with their own host family (ies) during the homestay experience. Adults interested in serving as a chaperon are encouraged to apply. Interested individuals may access program information and delegate applications at: go.illinois.edu/global4h. Participation Traveled internationally as part of a 4-H group YOUTH IN ACTION AWARDS National Honor The Youth in Action Award honors four 4-H members who have gained critical life skills through their 4-H experience and have used those skills to overcome a challenge, or challenges, they have faced. Each of the honorees epitomize 4-H youth empowerment and leadership. In addition, the winners have demonstrated the positive impact they ve made with their family, peers and community through their 4-H experiences. It s time, again, to nominate outstanding 4-H members in four different categories: Agriculture, Citizenship, Healthy Living, and STEM. Each winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship for higher education, be featured as the 4-H Youth Spokesperson for their pillar area and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to be recognized at National 4-H Council s Legacy Awards. 13 Photo Contest Announced The Illinois 4-H Foundation will feature a winter photo for their winter mailing, and they want the photo to be taken by an Illinois 4-H member! Here are the details we will have cool prizes for the top entries. Submit high resolution photos to illinois4h@illinois.edu by November 31. File sizes must be at least 500k in size. Photos should be WINTER scenes, but not depict holiday scenes. Photos of people must include a signed photo release of the person in the picture. Winning photos become the property of the Illinois 4-H Foundation Salute to Excellence 4-H Volunteer Awards The Illinois 4-H program is built on the work of amazing volunteers, and we look forward to recognizing our volunteers for what they do! The National 4-H Council sponsors the Salute to Excellence Award Program that targets 4-H volunteers who demonstrate exemplary service to 4-H, while promoting service through volunteerism as both an opportunity and a privilege. Outstanding local volunteers can be nominated for consideration as the 2018 Illinois Salute to Excellence Volunteer. If you are interested in nominating a volunteer for consideration, contact your extension office. The award categories are: Volunteer of the Year recognizing individuals who have served as 4-H volunteers for less than 10 years at the local, county, region, and state level. Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer recognizing individuals who have served 10 or more years at the local, county, region or state level. Nomination criteria will be available at your local Extension Office. Nominations are due to the State 4-H Office by Friday, November 20, Extension Office will be closed November for Thanksgiving 13
