If the item is italicized, it means it could go into multiple sections, YOU can only count it once, you choose which section you would like it in. 3 Section 6: Communication Skills 4-H PRESENTATIONS (Required for a Star Rank, count on PDR in top of Communication Section): Please see the Presentation Manual on the California 4-H website for all acceptable types of presentations that county towards your star rank. Demonstrations and Illustrated Talks: a demonstration is a show how and illustrated is to teach a concept or skill. Individual: 3 to 15 minutes long. Team (3 max): up to 15 minutes long. Speakers may NOT use notes. Scientific Demonstration and Illustrated Talks: Uses steps: 1.ask a question 2. Form a hypothesis 3. Test 4. Analyze 5. Conclusion 6. Results. Individual or Team (3 max) 3 minute minimum for primary, 15 min max for senior. Speakers may NOT use notes. Educational Display: an organized visual presentation or concept. Individual or Team (max 3). Speaker may NOT use notes. Prepared Speech: The speaker will persuade, inform or educate on a single issue or topic. Individual Only. Normally 2-5 minutes, but may extend to 10 minutes (speakers are NOT timed). No props, costumes, visual aid. Notes MAY be used and not detract from the speech. Interpretive Reading: Read any published written work (i.e. poetry, essays, speeches, childrens stories, etc.). The speaker creates the scene through voice. No props. No longer than 5 minutes. There is also Impromptu Speaking, Share the Fun, Cultural Arts, Audio-Visual Presentions and Problem Solving Presentations. Please also see the Presentation Manual on the California 4-H website. There is more in depth information and scoring information. To receive credit for a 4H presentation, each 4-H presentation must be presented before a new audience at a new event (repeating the same presentation at the same event does not count as two credits) ** This DO NOT include meeting or project announcements ** COMMUNICATION SKILLS (NOT 4H presentations but ALL have to relate to 4-H): Judged Exhibits: member enters a project at a 4-H event, but is not in that project (entered in Fashion review but not in a sewing project Prepared Talks: the member reports informational or educational 4-H material before a project group, 4-H club, etc. (Project talk: written copy with name must be give to VP at club meeting) Radio & Television Appearances: guest on tv or radio reporting on 4-H. Representing 4-H: such as wearing your 4-H uniform to school or doing something for National 4-H Week. Newspaper Articles: report the number of times the 4-H member wrote & submitted an articled connected with 4-H for publication (such as an article to The San Benancian or Off 68, or any other newspaper, newsletter, etc. (give a copy to CCL). Being in a newspaper photo does NOT count. 5 REMEMBER: You cannot enter the same activity in more than 1 category (so choose the section where you need the most points). Exception If a member participates in multiple activities during one event (such as Fantastic Field Day or State Field Day), those separate activities can be counted, as well as attendance at the event. Section 8: Lifestyle Activities: Please note new riles for this category Report your participation in organized groups or activities such as camps, community or school sports, music, theater and the arts, employment, church, or organizations. Each organization, group, activity or sport counts as one credit per 25 hours of participation per quarter, up to 4 times per year. If you did not complete at least 25 hours of participation that activity can not be counted. Examples: music or dance lessons, school or outdoor science camp, horseback riding or golf lessons, church choir, or other organizational memberships (FYI - Family outings, vacations, hobbies, homework, or watching an event cannot be counted)
