2 County Council/Adult Leader Meetings The 4-H Youth County Council meetings are open to 4-H members age 9 and older. Meetings provide opportunities for youth to meet, share ideas, plan, and implement activities with other youth throughout the county. Each club is encouraged to send 2 3 representatives to each meeting. Club representatives typically include the President and 1 2 Council Delegates. The next County Council Meeting will be Monday, October 24, at 6:30 p.m., at the Extension office. The Adult Leader Association meetings provide an opportunity for adult volunteers to meet, discuss ideas, and plan and implement activities that support the youth of the county. The next Adult Leader Meeting will be on Monday, November 28 at 7:15 p.m., at the Extension office. 4-H Food Challenge At TCU The 4-H Food Challenge is another fun way that 4-H members can exhibit their knowledge and skills while working as a team to create that special dish. Modeled after the Food Network s Iron Chef, this contest challenges teams of 3 5 members to create a dish using a predetermined set of ingredients. There is always a lot of excitement and laughter as members build lasting friendships while working together as a team to meet the challenge. Once again, TCU has graciously agreed to host the event for us. The contest date is November 12, so save the date. The entry registrations are due by October 14. (There is kitchen space available for 8 teams.) For additional information and the entry form, please refer to the Tarrant 4-H website, under Current Events.

3 Tarrant Adult Leaders Fundraiser The Tarrant County 4-H Adult Leaders Association (ALA) is made up of Tarrant County 4-H Club Managers and other Adult Volunteers (parents, etc.). The purpose of the ALA is provide support to the 4-H youth of Tarrant County. This support comes in a variety of ways including management of Tarrant County 4-H scholarship opportunities, coordination of the annual County Awards banquet, and support of the Tarrant County Youth Council activities. The current fundraiser is the sale of pecans.if you do any baking for the holidays or like to give that unusual gift, please take a moment and review the below information and complete the order form, the order form can be downloaded from the Tarrant 4-H website under Current Events. Feel free to ask friends/family if they are interested! All proceeds will benefit this year s scholarship awards, the annual awards banquet, and support the youth council s activities. In an effort to encourage club participation, the ALA is offering a $50 cash prize to the club with the highest number of pounds sold (the club must have a minimum of 20 pounds sold to be eligible for the contest). Also, for every pound sold by a Tarrant County 4- H club, the ALA will donate $1 to the Tarrant County 4-H Youth Council for their social activities.

4 Metro Beekeepers Association Scholarship The art of beekeeping is being encouraged through this youth scholarship program. Metro Beekeepers Association (MBA) began scholarships for youth in The goal is to educate youth in the art of beekeeping and to promote a better understanding of the value of honey bees to our environment and to the food chain. The applicant must be between the ages of 12 and 18 by September 1, 2016.The applicant must be currently enrolled in public, private or home school. The applicant and immediate family cannot have any bee colonies prior to 2017.The applicant must have permission and agreement from parent or guardian. The application must postmarked or ed by November 18, The winner of this scholarship will receive the following: A one year family membership in the Metro Beekeepers Association An 11-month beekeeping course and course book. A set of wooden-ware for a beehive. A nuc or package of bees for the hive. Beekeeping gear: hat, veil, gloves, hive tool, bee brush, and bee smoker. Mentoring by a MBA member for one year. Upon successful completion of the scholarship requirements, the recipient(s) will receive a recognition certificate and full ownership of the hive. For application and information go to this link: One Day 4-H How do you participate? 4-H members and their clubs/county programs should start now on identifying and planning a community service project. Work to secure all the necessary supplies/equipment/resources to get the project done. Advertise/market your project to locate media and others in the community so they will know the difference you, and 4-H, is making. Sign your project up at the one day 4-H website Conduct your project and then report your successes at the one day 4-H website.

5 Junior Leadership Retreat Junior Leadership Retreat is the premiere youth teaching youth statewide leadership retreat for junior and intermediate level 4-H members! Members of the Texas 4-H Council coordinate and conduct all of the educational workshops and recreational activities. It is a great weekend of learning and exploring, don t miss out! When? November 8-10, 2013 at the Texas 4-H Conference Center in Brownwood Deadline to Register is November 3 Cost? $115 for youth and $80 for Adult Chaperones. This includes two nights lodging in the dorms (bring your own linens), four meals, two evening snacks and all the program supplies. What to expect? Arrive Friday night between 6:00 and 8:00 pm; we ll start with recreation and getting to know one another through ice breakers and other activities. Saturday there will be five concurrent educational workshops for participants: vet science, leadership, bullying and inclusion, the new trashion show and archery! Should be LOTS OF FUN! Other workshops on team building and leadership round out the day s program. Saturday night the Dance theme is The Final Screening! You ll see Council members from the trashion show dressed like Wally, Archery instructors may look like Princess Merida, who knows Nemo and Dory may show up! Choose your favorite movie character and wear the part. There will be a costume parade and prizes!!! Sunday it s rise and shine and then we ll wrap up all the activities. You ll be on your way home by 11:00 am Along with bringing your linens for the dormitories, Texas 4-H Council invites you to bring a rock! There will be time to decorate the rocks on Saturday, before the Texas Star Ceremony on Saturday night. During the ceremony, you get to leave your mark on the 4-H Center.

6 CHEERS Louisiana Flooding Victims School Supplies Collection Countryside 4-H Club members conducted a Tarrant County collection of school supplies for Louisiana children affected by recent flooding. 310 packaged items were collected and distributed in the effort. Cheers to all who participated and gave to help others.

7 Major Livestock Entry Day For those of you who are interested in showing in the following livestock shows there will be a livestock show entry day held at our office on Monday, November 7, 2016 from 8 a.m. until 5 pm at the Tarrant County Extension office. Parking is not validated for this event. Please make this day a priority if you plan to participate in these shows. Exhibitors can make an appointment to complete their entries before that day, but NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 5 P.M. ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7! Bring original registration papers for all breeding animals and a copy that you can leave with the Extension office. (Exception -heifer registration upload deadline is Nov 1.) Yes I know that state has a few more days, but my schedule does not allow the extra days! Each show has a website with all their entry information listed. Be sure you are familiar with all rules and dates for each show you want to enter. You can download forms at home and have them filled out before you come, this will speed up the process (this is highly recommended). Fort Worth Judging Team entries are due Nov. 15. 8 Animal Project Sheet It is time to send in your animal project sheets to the 4-H office. As the owner of this project (s), you are encouraged to demonstrate your own ability, knowledge, and skill as a feeder and fitter of livestock. You should do your own work, with parent or legal guardian, 4-H leader, or agent support. You will develop decision-making skills when facing options while raising these projects. The Animal Project Form (aka Livestock Project Sheet) is required for 4-H poultry, rabbit, goat, sheep, swine, cattle and horse projects. The forms must be renewed each year along when re-enrolling for the new 4-H year. Show entries received in the 4-H office without an Animal Project Information Sheet on file will not be signed by agent. Please return by: fax, mail or drop off at the Extension office. For returning members the form is due October 1 st. For new members the form is due when you enroll in 4-H and get a project. The form was ed out recently but you can also find the form at the 4-H website under Livestock News. Fall Validations The dates and locations for Fall validations for sheep, goats, swine and heifers are: Tuesday, October pm; Crowley Ag Barn Thursday, October pm; Grapevine-Colleyville Ag Barn An additional date for swine will be announced as needed.
