1 Memorandum September 23, 2004 To: From: Subject: Cattle Feeders and Order Buyers Phil Osborne Extension Livestock Specialist WV Quality Assurance Feeder Calf Sale Friday October 1 9:00 AM Steers 1:00 PM Teleauction Will Be Available Please call to confirm a position on the sale. The 2004 West Virginia Quality Assurance program will offer 3245 steers and 2256 heifers representing one of the largest single day offering of preconditioned, source verified and process verified sale in the country. It makes for a long sale so this year we are going to break the sale up selling steers at 9:00 am and the heifers at 1:00 pm. This will allow for a small break away from the phone and time to grab a snack. The WV producers participating in this program take great pride in preparing their calves for this sale. They aggressively strive for genetic improvement, have adopted BQA guidelines and a strenuous animal health program. Most the pools should be familiar to you with two new additional pools this year. All consignors have attended our WV Beef Quality Assurance (WVBQA) certification programs and many pools conducted annual refresher courses this fall. Pfizer, Boehringer Ingelheim, Intervet, Ft Dodge and Southern States continue to partner with us and their support and assistance in certification and re-certification of our producers is greatly appreciated. All lots in this sale will feature certified WVBQA, source verified, and process verified feeder calves. All the pharmaceutical companies are offering attending veterinarians diagnostic assistance if any group of calves vaccinated with their products should the buyer experience animal health problems. We need you to contact us right away if you are experiencing problems. The Jackson County pool continues to offer calves that have not been implanted or treated with antibiotics and are ideal for the all natural programs. The Morgantown pool and Barbour pools have included a Mycoplasma vaccine for added protection. The BSE policies and the Japanese market talk of opening to cattle 20 month and younger has sparked an interest in BQA, source verified yearlings. There are several lots of lighter cattle that would make excellent backgrounder or stockers. Please note that the Silver Program calves are not weaned but have followed the same vaccination protocol as the Gold Program including the boosters. All boosters have been administered at least 30 days prior to delivery. See the health programs on the following page for explanation of the health programs. Most pools will be weighing calves individually to improve uniformity but most importantly to collect performance data. Please do not remove the ear tags from these calves. All calves can be traced back to the producer. If you purchase calves you will be receiving a packet explaining the health products used and a list of all calves purchased. We are trying to recover as much data as possible. If you will share we can continue to improve the quality of the calves.
2 The purchase of WV Quality Assurance calves helps reduce your exposure to risk by purchasing healthy genetically superior cattle. Take the opportunity to feed a yard full of WV BQA calves. You will not be disappointed with the performance and will be pleased with how easy the calves are to handle. There are few cooperative feeder calf programs that have had producers working over the past 18 years to produce high quality feeder cattle. You can put the genetics in this program up against any in the country and the improved health is just a bonus. Each load of calves within a pool will be offered separately you don t have to buy the whole lot in the larger pools but choice and privilege will be offered for loads within a lot. Please note pick-up times and conditions. Most the larger groups need to be coordinated to move on the same day. Please give Sam Garrett or myself a call to reserve a position on the teleauction. If you want to view some of the calves feel free to contact the consignors. Looking forward to hearing from you. If you have questions feel free to call!
