JR. CAMP ON-LINE REGISTRATION Jr. Camp is scheduled for June 6-8, 2018 at Whispering Cedars near Genoa. 4-H ers from Platte, Antelope, Boone, Merrick, Nance, Polk and York counties are welcome to attend. Jr. Camp is for 4-H ers age 8 11 and the cost is $75.00 per camper. Some of the fun activities at this camp include a zip line, repelling wall, swimming, singing, campfires, crafts and MORE! New for this year is to register for Jr. Camp on-line. The on-line registration for camp is now open but you must be enrolled in 4-H and payment must be received by our office in order to participate in Jr. Camp. A requirement to attend Jr. Camp is to have the 4-H Participant Permission and Health form completed in 4HOnline. 2 2018 PHOTOGRAPHY THEMES 2018 Unit II and III photography theme prints has changed from Nebraska Theme to True Leader exhibit prints. The 2018 State Fair 4-H Photography True Leader Exhibit Print class is described below. Both Unit II and Unit III will include this class. Explore true leaders in your community. True leaders can be anyone from community leaders, teachers, and volunteers to parents and friends. So, what sets them apart? What makes someone a true leader? What effect do they have on the people or environment around them? How can you tell their story through photography? Bookmark our website and click on Platte County 4-H tab for all up-todate 4-H information on workshops, camps, newsletters, fair, livestock, resources, etc. BIG RED SUMMER ACADEMIC CAMPS The 2018 Big Red Summer Academic Camps, June 10-15, 2018, are just around the corner! All camps are residential camps; all housing and food will be provided for all participants throughout the duration of the camp. Space is limited and camps will fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited scholarships available. Camps are hosted by Nebraska 4-H and UNL faculty members in various academic areas across campus. Academic camps are open to all high school youth grades 10th 12th including recent high school graduates to help explore careers in Weather & Climate Science, Engineering, Filmmaking, Education, Outdoor Nebraska, Unicameral Youth Legislature, and Veterinary Science. Candidates are at least 16 years old and like to have fun, hang out outdoors, and of course follow the rules. Jr. Camp is June 6-8. Camp officially starts in the afternoon on June 6 but counselor training will begin in the morning on June 6. (Training is mandatory!) Application can be found online at deadline is May 1. Contact Jody Wendt at the Extension office for more information. FAIR THEME Grow Your Roots with 4-H! Club Booths: The club booths will be in the exhibit hall to display the static exhibits. We encourage the clubs to get involved by decorating their booths around the fair theme: Grow Your Roots with 4-H!. This theme is based on an agriculture theme: plants, tree roots, country experiences, etc. Contact the Extension Office to reserve your club booth space Deadline is June 15 th. Hay Bale Contest: We love seeing your club s creativity with this contest! Decorate a hay bale to reflect the theme, Grow Your Roots with 4-H! Complete rules and sign up information is available at the Extension Office. Deadline to reserve a bale is June 15 th. Club booths and hay bales will be judged on their reflection of the theme. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top booths and hay bales! CALLING ALL 4-H ERS! Tractor Supply is one of our key partners! Twice a year, they hold a Paper Clover drive to where all of the proceeds get put back into local 4-H clubs. Paper clovers are sold for $1 each at each of the Tractor Supply Stores. In order to help spread the word about 4-H and answer questions from the customers who buy paper clovers, we like to have a few 4-H ers at the store during the clover drive. The dates for this spring are April We are looking for some 4-H ers who are interested in staffing the paper clover booth at Tractor Supply in Columbus at some point during those dates. This could be for a 1-2 hour shift or whatever works best for you. It can be on any of those dates as well and during anytime the store is open. You can bring some of your projects to display or create a 4-H display board so that you can share your 4-H experiences with customers as they come into Tractor Supply if you would like to. June 11th: Cake Decorating 101 9:00 1:00 pm at Heritage House Ages 8 & Up Learn basic cake decorating techniques to decorate your own exhibit for the fair! Instructor: Sandra Blaha, 4 H Cake Decorating Judge June 11 th : Cooking 101 Workshop 2:00 4:30 pm at Heritage House Ages 8 12 Helpful to have one year experience in a 4 H foods project. Join us in learning basic cooking skills to help prepare you for your 4 H cooking projects! Join us as we explore the new foods curriculum! June 14th: STEAM 1: Beginning Sewing 9:00 2:00 pm at Columbus Middle School FCS room Ages 8 & Up Learn basic sewing skills to create your very own four patch pillow! No previous sewing experience needed. Information about required materials will be in future newsletters. June 15 th : Design Decisions 101 9:30am 2:00pm at Ag Park Grandstands Ages 10 & Up Learn the basic elements of design and how to manipulate common mediums to create a yard decoration using recycled pallets AND to create a fused glass plate to be used as a functional decoration around the home. 4 Join us for a Livestock Judging Clinic! Youth, age 8-18, are welcome to attend. Learn how to judge cattle, swine, sheep and goats, as well as, how to write reasons. A mock contest will take place in the afternoon to use the skills learned throughout the morning. Lunch will be provided. 6 The final in person QA session offered at the Extension Office is May 21, 10:00 11:30 am. If you cannot make that date, reach out to a surrounding county and us your certificate or complete QA online. The deadline for quality assurance is May 31. Registering for quality assurance will be online at using the Family 4 H Online login information for active youth. New this year at AKSARBEN is a Breeding Sheep and Breeding Goat Show! If you have a breeding animal, consider taking part in this new opportunity at AKSARBEN. There is also a change to the nomination process for State Fair and AKSARBEN. Exhibitors are required to submit their own nominations online at Market Beef DNA Envelopes are still due to the Extension Office by April 5. The Market Beef online nominations are due by April 15. There will be no late nominations accepted on Show Stock Manager. Step by step instructions on how to nominate an animal can be found at 4 h/. A fee of $6 will be paid online for the nominations of market animals. There is no fee for breeding animals or FFA Feeder Calves. Livestock Judging Practices Practices will be on Mondays in the evening, official times are to be determined. The first practice will be Monday, April 2, location pending. EID Tags and DNA Envelopes are available at the Extension Office. EID tags cost $2.14 each. Deadline to apply for the Nebraska Pork Youth Conference at UNL. More information can be found at bacon whole lot/, along with the online application. This event is free except travel, but space is limited! NEW for 2018 is State Fair and AKSARBEN Market Beef online nomination. In order to show at State Fair and AKSARBEN, nominations must be completed online along with a DNA payment at by deadline. Broiler order and payment deadline to Extension Office. Cost this year is $1.25 per bird. Livestock Judging Clinic at Ag Park from 9 am 4 pm. If you are interested in participating on a Livestock Judging Team or learning more about judging in general, this would be a great place to start! 7 TRACTOR SAFETY TRAINING All youth aged 14 and 15 and working on a farm or ranch other than their own MUST be certified through a Hazardous Occupations Course. Cost of training is $60 which includes instruction, materials and lunch. Advanced registration and payment is required. Dates, locations, registration form can be found online at LIVESTOCK PROGRESS SHOWS, ANIMAL SHOWS & CLINICS NEW to our website is a listing of Nebraska 4-H/Extension livestock progress shows, animal shows and clinics. This includes horse, rabbit, poultry, small pet, beef, swine, sheep and goat. Will post to the website progress shows, camps, clinics and other shows sponsored by Nebraska Extension and 4-H clubs. PROGRESSIVE AGRICULTURE SAFETY DAY MAY 22 Youth in grades K-8 are invited to join us for a Safety Day on May 22nd at Ag Park, Columbus. Paid registrations must be received by May 15 at the Extension Office. Topics for demonstration are Animal, ATV, Equipment, Chemical, Grain Safety and Healthy Lifestyles.
