However spring and summer are great times to grow ourselves as well through the many leadership opportunities that are available through 4-H. Over the next few months we have the Idaho 4-H State Teen Association Convention (formally Teen Conference) as well as the district and state Ambassador events. We highly encourage participation in these events and more details are available at the Extension Office. However not all leadership opportunities involve travel. Simply serving your club as an officer or helping in other ways will help to build leadership skills and can add to your potential. No matter the type of leadership experience you are gaining be sure to record it in your 4-H record book as some day you may find it has its own rewards. Starting this year, CCS books will no longer be used for these four projects and have been replaced by a skills check list. New Livestock Project Checklists This new check list is directly linked to a set of lesson plans to help leaders facilitate educational activities at their meetings through out the year and encourage collaborative research based learning in 4-H. It is our hope that this helps to better engage youths in hands on learning about their species. This is a big change for all of us. If you have any questions, please ask your 4-H leader or contact the Extension Office. We will be more than happy to help you through this change! The Livestock Lesson Plans and Checklists can be found at projects under Animal Science Lesson Plans. 4
5 Communications Rodeo Coming Up this month is the Gem/Boise County Oral Presentation Contest better known as Communications Rodeo. We would like encourage all 4-H youth to take full advantage of the program by participating and competing on March 18th, 2017 in a number of communication based events including demonstrations, oral presentations, dramatic readings, and job interview. While we do still have a few weeks to prepare for which even events you chose to compete in the deadline to register for the even is March 3rd, 2017 Events at Communications Rodeo Demonstrations: A demonstration is putting words into action by both showing and telling how to accomplish something. By the end of the presentation the audience should leave with the knowledge that was demonstrated. Dramatic readings: Words and Actions come alive to educate or entertain as one recites a story or narrative with theatrical touches. Prepared Speeches: One must prepare an original speech to educate or inform on a specific topic. While not using visual aids you strive to deliver content to the listener and shape their view of the topic. Extemporaneous Speeches: This is a chance to think on your feet by quickly figuring out a speech after drawing the speech topic just a few minuets before delivering the speech. Job interview: In this true life situation one will practice the art of communication during the interview process because practice makes perfect and this skill means money in the future. TV Commercials: This is an opportunity to creatively come up with a way to sell a product or service to the audience just like on TV.
