2 Welcome to Overmiller Gelbvieh and Red Angus, OVERMILLER Gelbvieh and Red Angus Well, it is midnight the night before the catalog is due and Brent and Kelly are working on penning bulls for the sale. So, Brittany and I took it among ourselves to write this years welcome letter. After Brittany got all three kids to sleep while Risa typed and the guys told her what to do. So, we extend a warm welcome to all and a sincere Thank You to all our past customers and friends for your loyal support and interest in our breeding program. We have only printed drafts 3 times and they are all laying on the table around us and we are all wondering which corrections we have made in the catalog and which ones we still need to do. Having small children has definatly made doing the catalog yourself more of a challenge. Roger and Norma have been raising seedstock for 40 years. So, you will find in the back a letter about how things have changed written by Roger. In that 40 years they have raised Herefords, Gelbvieh, Red Angus, and Balancer cattle while raising 4 children who all have developed a love for raising cattle themselves. They are all now trying to instill this love for the farm and cattle in their children. In addition to this years sale, we are offering fall bred heifers. There are 6 elites and groups just like you have seen in the past with our open heifers. Yes, there are still open heifers available and bulls out of the same sires and some new sires. Lot 1 is as wide based and big middled as you can make a bull. He is loaded with red meat down his top and through out his hip. Lot 2 has always been the upheaded stylish one of the trio. However, he is more than just a neat pattern; this dude also offers some hip and muscle shape. Lot 3 is the Dark Knight, yes he is black like their dam. He is the combo of the first two. He is deeper like lot 1, yet he is smoother made like lot 2. The quality these 3 all offer should help assure one that they will sire quality offspring no matter how they re bred. Their dam is sired by the highly productive black bull who brings an interesting twist to their pedigree. Nexus has been called one of the most fault free true beef bulls to stand in the ORIgen stud. From a phenotype standpoint he is level topped, deep and bulging about his rib, and he Maternal Sister to Lot 4 s Dam, Pictured a month after her first calf. has a square level hip. He has been an eye catcher since a very young age. From a pedigree standpoint he is from proven bloodlines all throughout. He combines Jolene, Blockana, Meadow-West Bailey, and Abigrace. All cow lines that have proven to be productive and efficient. Maternally his dam is backed by 3 generations of donors, and his sire is backed by 4 donors out of 5 generations. From an EPD standpoint he excells across the board. In real life he did what very few bulls can do. He took his BW of 60 lbs, and took that times over 11 to reach his WW of 677. Look around and see how many bulls do that. He ratio d 88 at birth and exploded to 115 at weaning. We have never tried to picture his dam, but the dam s maternal sister s picture is a fair representative of the cow family. I look at pictures of my grandfather s and great grandfather s cattle and they sure have changed from then until now. I remember as a kid we had three steers weigh 500 pounds off the cow; we were so proud. I believe the price was thirty cents a pound. Most calves weighed pounds. For a new bull, a person kept his best calf or would go three or four miles down the road to a neighbor who had nice Herefords and buy a bull for $250 to $350.The bull was hauled home in the back of a pickup. Cattle were hauled to the sale barn the same way. I often think what would my dad or granddad think if they saw cattle bought and sold on the internet, breeding cows with a straw of semen, flushing of cows, or to top it all off, cloning of cattle. Feeding has also changed. We ve gone from feeding cane and alfalfa hay with a pitch fork to a loader and mixer wagon feeding distillers mixed with ground hay and silage and some grain. It is pretty astonishing to me to think about all the changes during my lifetime. It would appear that there is nothing left, but there are many other changes to come in the future, even if we can t see them from here. I wonder what the next seventy years will bring.
