1 TEXAS JUNIOR BRAUNVIEH STATE SHOWCASE TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE Rules and Guidelines: 1. All exhibitors must be members of the Texas Braunvieh Association. The membership form is available Membership dues will be accepted at the show and must be paid prior to participating. 2. Entry fees are $40.00 per head, plus $20.00 per Bred & Owned entry. Bred and Owned must be entered in Owned Show. 3. Showmanship Showdown Invitational contestants are competing for buckles and points towards Heifer Certificates. Contestants are required to pay a $25.00 entry fee as well as another $25.00 to join the Texas Junior Braunvieh Association. 4. Entries will be accepted the day of the show however; it is strongly suggested that the exhibitor information be sent in by May 2, 2016 to insure everyone a T-Shirt and a meal for the banquet on Sunday. Any entries received after this date will be charged a $20.00 per exhibitor late fee. All exhibitors must wear the official TEAM Braunvieh T-Shirts. 5. All cattle exhibited must be properly registered and on file with Braunvieh Association of America, in the exhibitors name. Cattle exhibited must have registration papers, a legible tattoo of brand corresponding to its registration papers and a health certificate 6. Exhibitor must wear the correct show number. 7. ALL bedding must be purchased at the Bell County Expo Center. Absolutely NO outside beddings will be allowed. This will cause added costs to the facility usage and that charge split amongst exhibitors that violate this rule. 8. This is a blow and go show. No adhesives will be allowed. 9. Females born prior to September 1, 2014 must show in the cow/calf class with a calf at side. Calves exhibited in the cow/calf class cannot be over 230 days of age. 10. 2 11. All grievances must be presented in written form to the show committee within 24 hours. 12. Awards will be presented at the banquet at the conclusion of the show. 13. Everyone is expected to participate in clean-up of trash and debris. All beddings and such will be cleaned by the Bell County Expo Center staff upon your release. 14. Exhibitors and their entries will be released at the conclusion of the awards banquet. Additional Owned Heifer Show Rules: 1. Owned heifers will divided into four divisions; Full blood/purebred, Percentage American, Percentage British, and Percentage Continental (European). 2. Junior members must be the owner of the animal as registered with the BAA 3. Classes will not exceed five (5) head per class if possible. 4. Cow/calf pairs are not eligible for Grand Champion Female (per BAA) 5. Percentage females must be a minimum of 1/8 Braunvieh and registered as such with the BAA Additional Bred and Owned Heifer Show Rules: 1. There will be a Fullblood/Purebred show as well as a Percentage show. 2. Junior members must be the owner of the animal. 3. Entered heifers must be bred and owned by the exhibitor. 4. Dams must be registered in the BAA Herdbook. 5. Percentage females must be a minimum of 1/8 Braunvieh and registered as such with the BAA.
3 6. Embryo calves do not qualify unless the exhibitor owns the donor cow. 7. The exhibitor must have owned the dam at the time of the calf s conception and been the continuous owner of the animal. 8. All Bred and Owned heifers must also be entered and shown in the Owned division of the heifer show 9. Classes will not exceed five (5) head per class if feasible. 10. Cow/calf pairs are not eligible for Grand Champion Female (per BAA). Additional Bred and Owned Bull Show Rules: 1. There will be a Fullblood/Purebred show as well as a Percentage show. 2. Junior members must be the owner of the animal. 3. Entered bulls must be bred and owned by the exhibitor. 4. Percentage bulls must be a minimum of 1/8 Braunvieh and registered as such with the BAA 5. Embryo calves do not qualify unless the exhibitor owns the donor cow. 6. The exhibitor must have owned the dam at the time of the bull s conception and been the continuous owner of the bull. 7. It is recommended that bulls under the age of one (1) year of age be shown with a nose ring. Bulls one (1) year of age and older are REQUIRED to have a fixed nose ring. 8. Bulls 14 months or older are required to have a certificate verifying positive semen evaluation. 9. Classes will be divided by age as proportionately as possible.
4 Showmanship Showdown: 1. There will be two showmanship shows, the Invitational and the Braunvieh. The Invitational will be for participants who have not shown nor participated in the State or National Jr. Braunvieh shows for the past two years. The Braunvieh show is for current TJBA members who have participated within the last two years. 2. There will be buckles awarded to each division of each show 3. Showmanship contestants must show an animal entered in the Texas Junior Braunvieh State Showcase. The animal can be from the Full blood/purebred or the Percentage division. 4. Animals shall be clean and blown, no fitting for this show. 5. Judges may switch cattle, ask questions, or determine other methods in order to select the winners. 6. Winners will be announced Sunday during the banquet. 1. Teams will be designated at random Quiz Bowl: 2. The contest will be single elimination competition. Correct answers are worth 10 points. There will be no penalty for incorrect answers 3. There may be discussion among team members during team questions only. 4. Each team will have 10 seconds to buzz in. Once a team member has buzzed in, he/she will have 10 seconds to start answering the question.
5 Salesmanship: 1. Competition will be on an individual basis, but participants may ask another member to assist with animal and/or props. 2. Cattle may not be fitted beyond clipped, washed, and blown dry. 3. Each competitor will bring an animal to the competition to promote and sell to the judges. Presentation time must be at least two (2) minutes but less than five (5) minutes. Questions do not count as presentation time. 4. Sales tools may be used but must be supplied by the junior exhibitor. 5. Presentation will be scored as follows: a. Knowledge of the animal max 100 points b. Presentation max 100 points c. Poise and Delivery max 100 points d. Overall Effectiveness max 100 points e. Total (max of 400 points) 6. Invitational Salesmanship contestants may apply the same concept or they can sell the Braunvieh breed as a whole or in part. For example sell operation X on why they should purchase or implement Braunvieh genetics in their operation. Public Speaking: 1. Contestants will choose one of two topics. What Braunvieh influenced cattle have to offer? or Why I chose Braunvieh cattle? 2. Contestants will prepare a two (2) to five (5) minute speech on the topic which he/she chooses. The speech should be prepared prior to the event, and exhibitor should be prepared to give his/her speech at any given time once event starts. There will be NO additional time given to prepare speech once event starts. 3. Contestant will present his/her speech to a three (3) person panel. Each contestant must agree to his/her speech being recorded and possibly used in future Braunvieh promotionals. 4. Scoring will be based upon knowledge of the subject, professionalism, poise, organization, eye contact, and overall effectiveness.
6 Creative Writing: 1. Braunvieh contestants: This year s subject is Why I choose/chose Braunvieh. The subject may be incorporated in the writing as the contestant chooses. 2. Invitational contestants: Share your dreams, aspirations and/or goals and how they relate to this opportunity to compete for a certificate towards the purchase of a heifer. 3. Entries should be informative and entertaining. They should not be research papers. 4. Braunvieh cattle should be included in the story in some way 5. Junior division entries may be typed or handwritten in ink. Intermediate and Senior division must be typed. 6. Junior entries must be between 300 and 500 words, Intermediate s must be between 600 and 800 words, and Senior s must be between 800 and 1,000 words. 7. All typed entries should be double spaced with a font size of Pages should be numbered 9. Entries must include a cover page with the following information: contestant s name, address, phone number, birth date, and word count. 10. Contestant name should only be on the cover sheet. No name should be on any other page. 11. Entries will be evaluated with a 50 point score sheet, with each of the components receiving 1-10 points (1 being lowest and 10 being highest): content, organization, style, length and guidelines, and overall effectiveness. Proper grammar and spelling will be evaluated during the scoring of the paper. In the event of a tie, awards will go to co-winner
7 Photography: 1. Entries should consist of photographs of Braunvieh cattle, or Braunvieh related activities. 2. All entries should be 8 X 10 inches 3. All entries are to be mounted on a mat board. 4. Photos must be original and not altered or enhanced in any way. 5. No more than two (2) photographs per exhibitor 6. Photographs must have been taken by the exhibitor. 7. Entries that have been submitted from previous years will not be permitted Posterboard: 1. Entries should serve as a promotional tool for the Braunvieh breed. 2. Posters may be creative and informative, using text, pictures, collages, objects or any other appropriate items. 3. All entries should be on regular size poster board and should be light enough in weight for hanging. Sponsorship Drive: Contestants will accumulate points based on obtaining sponsors for the show. Each contestant will be issued a sponsorship letter of different levels as well as a sponsorship/contributor form. Contestants should notify committee with each and every sponsor received. Points will be awarded to contestants as described in Hi-point calculations. Anyone that gets ANY sponsor will receive at least 25 participation points
8 Barnyard Olympics: Teams participate in fun barnyard chores and games. Each participant will accumulate points for their participation in this event. Cattleman s Quiz: A short multiple choice quiz that will test the knowledge of the beef industry and production as well as the history and characteristics of the Braunvieh breed. This will be a quiz to see how many correct answers each exhibitors can obtain. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. Skill-a-thon: Identification of industry tools, and what they are used for. Contestants will go station to station to identify industry tool and/or products. Contestant will be graded on correct answers with no penalty for incorrect answers.
9 Junior Braunvieh Breeders Incentive Program Heifer Certificate Eligibility 1. Heifer certificates in the amount of $ will be awarded to Hi-Point Individuals during the Texas Junior Braunvieh Showcase. Certificates will be redeemable at the sponsoring breeder. (see High-Point rules and calculations) 2. In the event of a tie, scores from the following event will be used in the order listed as tie breakers. Cattleman s quiz, Salesmanship, and Skill-a-thon. 3. To be eligible for a Heifer Certificate an exhibitor must participate in all events. 4. All contests are automatically entered. The following contests are; Cattleman s Quiz, Quiz Bowl (Cattle Jeopardy), Skill-a-thon, Creative Writing, Barn Yard Olympics, Salesmanship, Public Speaking, Photo contest, Poster board contest, and Showmanship 5. It is the responsibility of the Invitational contestants to acquaint themselves with the Braunvieh exhibitors and select an animal to exhibit in showmanship. (Invitational exhibitors must use one of the animals entered in the state show) 6. Heifer Certificate recipients and their guardians must sign and agree to meet the Expected Standards of Excellence as set by the Junior Braunvieh Breeders Incentive Program committee before redeeming their certificate with the sponsoring breeder 7. The recipient shall redeem their certificate with the sponsoring breeder for the purchase of a Braunvieh heifer. Any difference between the certificate value and the final price of the chosen heifer will be worked out between the sponsoring breeder and the certificate holder. 8. Any additional agreements made between the breeder and certificate holder are between those two parties. The Junior Braunvieh Breeders Incentive Program committee, nor the Texas Braunvieh Association will be responsible for any other agreements. 9. All exhibitors are expected to exhibit good sportsmanship and exemplify the TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) motto. 10. Heifers won under the Junior Braunvieh Breeders Incentive Program will be eligible to be nominated by the breeder in a Futurity to be held at the 2017 Texas Junior Braunvieh State Showcase provided the Expected Standards of Excellence are met by both the heifer and the exhibitor.
10 High-Point Calculations: 1. All contestants are automatically entered. Contestants must participate in all events to qualify. 2. Points will be earned in the following contests: Showmanship, Salesmanship, Cattleman s Quiz, Skill-a-thon, Creative Writing, Public Speaking, Poster board, The Sponsorship Drive, and the cattle show (current Braunvieh exhibitors points will only be accumulated on your highest placing animal) 3. Participation points will be earned in all Team games (Barnyard Olympics and Quiz Bowl) as well as photo contest. 4. Exhibitors will accumulate points in every event that they actively participate in. 5. There will be a High-point junior, intermediate, and senior age contestant 6. Points will be tabulated as follows: 1 st place 50 points 2 nd place 45 points 3 rd place 40 points 4 th place 35 points 5 th place 30 points Participation 25 points 7. Hi-Point Individuals will be tabulated and recognized at our banquet on Sunday
