1 4-H UPDATE Midway District 4-H Newsletter4-H Newsletter February 2018 I don t know about you but I am really over winter! The cold and dry air is hard on pets, livestock, and people! The good news is that we live in Kansas and as the old adage says stay a little while and it will change! Changes are always happening and the goal for any change is to make things better. Sometimes these are successful, some are learning opportunities! Included in this Update are several changes for the fairs, updates to YQCA, more information about changes to awards, and great information for new (and not so new) families. Be sure to check it out! One of my favorite books Change is Good..You Go First!, includes the quote Change what needs changing; not what s easy. Change isn t easy for any of us but keeping in mind our goal of providing research-based education and experience-based learning to provide youth with useful life skills by working with caring adults who set examples and model behaviors makes necessary changes worth it! Change doesn t mean a previous process was wrong..just that there may be a different way to arrive a similar end. Margaret Mead is quoted Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that every has. We are providing a background and framework for 4-H members to challenge and change the world by Making the Best Better! Life is a Grand Adventure Make every day count! 4 Policy Change! Due to a number of outstanding invoices for varying amounts, a change has been made to the Midway Extension District policy regarding invoices. Per the Midway Extension District board meeting on , all outstanding invoices must be paid before 2018 livestock tags will be administered. In addition, we will collect the tagging fees for new tags at the time they are provided; invoices will not be sent and animals will not be tagged if payment is not available. The cost for tags will be $3.50 for beef tags and $2.75 for small animal tags. You will need exact payment in cash (or a check). For local or state events, payment must be made by the refund date or we will cancel your registration to prevent the District from losing money on a late cancellation. Scavenger Hunt Results We received NO responses to the January newsletter scavenger hunt! We ll try another one again later this year. The answers to the January hunt are: Q1 What date is the next organizational leaders meeting? March 7 Q2 What is the deadline for Club Days entries? Feb. 1 Q3 Who is the new Midway Extension District staff member? Sam Lincoln Q4 What is the Midway District website? It is Q5 What age is Campference for? Ages 12-14
5 New Family Resource Page Many of the events and paperwork most definitely the paperwork for 4-H can be overwhelming for new 4-H families! This page will be used to highlight things that may be helpful to know in regard to upcoming events, deadlines, and necessary documents. Your Club Leader is also a great resource! Who Can Help Answer My Questions? The Midway district 4-H page is a great resource and place to start. Answers to many questions can be found here, but sometimes it s nice to talk to a real person and talk through any problems you may encounter. Towards the bottom left-hand side, you will find the phone numbers and addresses for both the Ellsworth Extension Office and the Russell Extension Office. Give us a call or stop by and will we be happy to help you with whatever you may be wondering about. Ellsworth Office 210 N. Kansas Suite #1, Courthouse Ellsworth, KS Russell Office 309 S. Fossil Russell, KS What Qualifies to go on to Regional Club Day or Kansas State Fair. The Club Day handbook found on the Midway District 4-H page has a great, comprehensive list of how many entries from each category, per county can go on to Regional Club Day and Kansas State Fair. You must earn a purple to continue on to the regional, or state level. You DO NOT have to attend regionals to continue on to the Kansas State Fair. Can I Still Add A Project? Absolutely! The district wide add/drop deadline is May 1st. The projects must be added or dropped through the 4-H Online program. More info on projects you may be interested in can be found on the Midway District 4-H website, under the projects tab.
6 Leaders Learning Center Review To-Do 4-H Update Important Dates/ Deadlines (Calendar) Check Club Mailbox at Ext Office Report from 4-H Council Meetings Provide any leadership changes to Extension Office ASAP Update Volunteer Renewal Information!!!! Promote/Recruit 4-H members ask a friend to attend a 4-H meeting with them Encourage current 4-H members to review and complete applications for KYLF, Citizenship In Action, Citizenship Washington Focus Remind all 4-H members and parents who volunteer to enroll via 4-H Online! The Extension Office has a copy of the Cloverbud handbook for each club please provide this resource to your club Cloverbud leader. Begin recruiting for the new 4-H year Provide officer and clubs leadership updates as soon as possible to the Extension Office YQCA Youth Quality Care of Animals In recognition of the educational opportunities for livestock projects and a goal of fully preparing youth to understand and discuss safe handling of livestock, especially as it relates to the food supply, the Youth Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is an extensive program provided to train youth. Effective for 2018, both the Ellsworth County Fair Association and Russell Country Free Fair Board have implemented the annual YQCA certification to be completed by July 1 in order for youth to participate in the 4-H Premium Auctions. YQCA was developed as a nation-wide joint mission between all livestock organizations and state leaders for youth livestock programs. During the 3-year rotation of topics, the following will be addressed each year with a different focus: Food Safety, Animal Well-Being, and Life Skills. The 60-minute courses are available in two formats: on-site and online. In addition, to the two on-site classes to be offered in the Midway District, 4-H youth would be able to attend any other on-site class offered in the area. 4-H youth must register online and families will utilize their 4-H Online sign on to access the system. There is a small fee for either delivery method, $3.00 for the on-site course and $12.00 for the online course. The fee for either class option is collected at the time of online registration and all fees are collected and held by the YQCA Foundation for continued course development and delivery. A big change for Midway District 4-H members, in addition to the annual certification, is the addition of rabbits and poultry to the training so it will be a requirement for Midway 4-H members who want to sell rabbits or poultry in the Premium Auctions. On-site classes will be available in the Midway District on March 22 at the Methodist Education Building in Wilson at either 10:30-12 or 5:30 7, at KSU Junior Producer Days as one of the afternoon break-out sessions, or at many other locations across the state. Enroll for YQCA at: A helpful document for families is located at: 20instructions.pdf
