1 4 th Annual NEZ PERCE RIDE TO FREEDOM A Commemorative Trail Ride Sanctioned By Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada Special Contributors The Nez Perce Appaloosa Horse Club June 27 June 30, 2008 At The Historic Reesor Ranch Located near Fort Walsh National Historic Site And Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, Saskatchewan The 4 th Annual Nez Perce Ride to Freedom", is a trail ride sanctioned by the Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada. This ride is a three-day historical event, honouring the Nez Perce people who fled from the Bear Paw Battlefield in 1877 seeking refuge in Canada. A tour of Fort Walsh will enrich our understanding of early North American history and special contributors, the Nez Perce Appaloosa Horse Club, will share with us current & historical information about the Nee-Me-Poo people. The flight of the Nez Perce is a captivating story and an integral part of Canadian frontier history; riders meet to remember the Nez Perce journey and hear the dramatic story of the events surrounding the period of The ride will focus on the event when the Nez Perce, under the leadership of White Bird, escaped into Canada with their families and horses; perhaps a type of freedom, but there was nothing ideal about this time. In October 1877 the Northwest Mounted Police were monitoring the situation very closely, and reports from them confirm the arrival of many Nez Perce with some 300 head of horses (in one group) at Sitting Bull s camp in Saskatchewan, Canada that fall. Chief White Bird of the Nez Perce then traveled to Fort Walsh at Cypress Hills to determine the next step for his people. Much more of the story will be told during the ride. The common bond that we share with the Nez Perce people who were exiled from their homeland in Idaho is the Appaloosa horse. The 4 th Annual Nez Perce Ride to Freedom celebrates this mutual bond as we once again ride together in friendship and in honour of this historical event. 1

4 Nez Perce Ride to Freedom Trail Riding Etiquette 1) Always ride to the abilities of the least experienced rider or horse. 2) If you spot a trail hazard while riding, point it out to your companions. 3) When going through gates, proceed single file down the trail far enough for all horses to get through the gate without bunching up. Stop and wait for gate person to close the gate, remount and get back into position. 4) Don t let your horse run up on, nuzzle, or scratch on other horses. 5) Never ride away from a dismounted rider on the trail. 6) When encountering obstacles such as a bridge, creek, biker, or other hazards, wait until all riders in the group are safely past the obstacle before proceeding. 7) Never pass a trail boss. Never pass on the trail without asking first if it is okay with the rider ahead. 8) In the event that a questionable incident occurs, stop immediately in your tracks, inform a trail boss and wait for instructions. 9) If your horse has a tendency to kick at other horses, tie a ribbon on his tail. You are responsible for your horse s behaviour. 10) Maintain reasonable spacing between horses. A full horse length should be the minimum distance you allow. 11) Crossing roads do not cross single file, line up abreast on shoulder then proceed across the road as one. 12) Do not run up hills! HAVE FUN! RIDE SAFE! 4
5 NEZ PERCE RIDE TO FREEDOM SAFETY COMMITTEE GUIDELINES Lead Trail Guide: Should be mounted in the front of the ride from the moment the first rider is mounted and placed in line, and should NOT LEAVE THAT POST unattended. Will set the pace for the trail while keeping an eye behind them for gaps in the line. It is very important for the lead guide not to ride too fast. It is their job to watch the trail ahead for obstacles and points of interest. They must communicate clearly any instructions to the riders behind them. When climbing or descending hills or crossing obstacles, the lead trail guide should give clear instructions and must not get too far ahead, which could result in the other horses trotting unexpectedly to catch up. With eyes in the front and the back of their head, the lead trail guide must also listen for any communication from those behind them. The Drag Trail Guide: Rides at the rear of the ride and is responsible for keeping the leader informed about what is going on. They can communicate with riders ahead of them, giving instruction and encouragement where needed. They may need to dismount and shut gates or pick up dropped items etc. In such cases the whole ride should stop and wait until the drag rider remounts and is ready to continue. Flank Trail Guides: Should be spread out among the riders. Flank trail guides can relay communication between the lead and drag trail guides and can assist riders by giving instruction and encouragement. A flank trail guide may end up leading a horse if a rider proves unable to manage their horse. First Aider: Designated first aid people will be amongst the drag and flank trail guides. The use of walkie - talkies by the trail guides is highly recommended if at all possible. It is recommended to use one guide per 10 to 12 riders. 5
