1 July/August 2015 Rebecca Wilkins Extension Educator 4-H Youth Development Clover Print V O L U M E 1 5, I S S U E 4 Harrison County 4-H J U N E 2 6, Nancy Hudson Interim County Extension Director Annette Lawler Extension Educator Health & Human Sciences, CD Miranda Ulery Extension Educator Agriculture & Natural Resources Jackie Young FNP Program Assistant Mary Eve Office Manager Linda Flock Assistant Office Manager Kimberly Novak Administrative Assistant On June 4 th, Dr. Steve McKinley came to Harrison County for Volunteer Appreciation Night and spoke to our local 4-H volunteers. His message was entitled Indiana 4-H: Today and Tomorrow. Dr. McKinley reflected on the 4-H essential elements (belonging, mastery, independence and generosity), and the 4-H mission areas, (science, citizenship and healthy living). With the help of several Harrison County Junior Leaders, Dr. McKinley asked our volunteers to reflect on how Harrison County 4-H is incorporating the essential elements and mission areas into our local 4-H program. The questions and answers are outlines below. How is Harrison County 4-H Building youth adult partnerships? Through workshops where adults encourage youth to lead, through workshops where adults directly teach safety and responsibility, by allowing today s youth to become tomorrow s leaders through mentorship and teamwork, and by allowing youth to lead and run meetings, but being there to guide if help is needed. Incorporating each of the mission areas? By offering Robotics and Career development Events (Science), by encouraging Service Projects ( Citizenship), and by hosting the Color Me Green 5k (Health). Including the Essential Elements of positive youth development? By encouraging service projects (Generosity), by offering a safe place to meet new friends and try new things (Belonging), by offering workshops where youth can learn about new projects (Mastery), and by providing trips where youth can have new experiences in a safe way (Independence). Maintaining focus on positive youth development? By providing a large variety of youth programming, by trying new things no matter the challenge, by reaching out to area organizations that also have youth members, and by having proactive leader trainings. Growing opportunities for new youth and adult audiences? Through after school programs, handson learning experiences, and by advertising. As we enter the fair season, I d like to thank each and every Harrison County Volunteer that made Team Harrison County 4-H a reality this year. As you are working at the fair, helping with last minute projects and questions, or signing record sheets, I hope that you find a moment to reflect on the good work you have done. The fair is our Grand Finale. Let s celebrate our 4-H youth members! 6 The Harrison County Community Foundation has asked the Harrison County 4-H to be a part of the endowment building campaign program in In the month of July, any contribution made to the Harrison County 4-H Endowment Fund will be matched 2:1. Any contributions made outside of July, before or after, will still be eligible for the 1:1 match. Please assist us in getting the word out on this great opportunity to help make the Harrison County 4-H program better. Thanks, Tim Harmon Sunday, July 12 th 11 AM Fairgrounds $8.00 per plate All proceeds will go the Harrison County 4-H Endowment Fund Every $1 will be matched by the HCCF with an additional $2 The Harrison County Agricultural Society is making affordable passes available to 4-H parents through Ag Society Membership, as opposed to selling a 4-H Parent Pass. Admittance prior to 4 PM is FREE to all. If you need to arrive after 4 PM Monday-Saturday, the Ag Membership is available for $25, allows for free entry at all times and also entitles you to vote at the annual meetings' board election. 8 Join Harrison County 4-H and the Harrison County Community Foundation to MAKE THE BEST BETTER by making a gift to the 4-H Endowment Fund. The HCCF has partnered with 4-H and is providing a 2 for 1 match for gifts into the 4-H Endowment Fund received during the month of July. This essentially allows you to triple your impact. A $100 gift from you made in July generates another $200 from HCCF, for a total contribution of $300. We serve over 500 traditional club members & reach more than 1,000 others through in and after school programs (an increase of over 12% from last year). Your gift will not only provide long term stability, but will also help fund immediate needs. The principle is invested, 5% of the fund s balance is spendable every year. Thanks to a generous donor who started the fund in 2006, over $30,000 has been used to send youth and advisors to 4-H camp, purchase robotics kits, set up a computer lab, and purchase needed supplies for the new show barn. Building the Endowment Fund makes more things like these possible forever. Checks can be made payable to HCCF, denote 4-H in the memo line, and send to PO Box 279, Corydon, IN or drop them off at the HCCF office, located at 1523 Foundation Way. Donations can also be made online at Click on Donate Now, then click on Harrison County 4-H Fund and follow the prompts. Only gifts received during July will be eligible for the 2 for 1 match. More information is available by calling HCCF at (812) or the Extension Office at (812) Your support is greatly appreciated, as you help us develop today s youth into tomorrow s leaders! 8

9 Volunteers would be appreciated to help recruit new 4-H families at the following events. More Back-to-school events may be scheduled. July 22 Corydon Intermediate, 11AM-1PM and 5PM-7PM July 23 Heth-Washington Elementary, 6PM-8PM August 3 North Harrison Elementary, 6PM-8PM Representatives from clubs near these schools are encouraged to contact Rebecca and attend to recruit. Building watchers are still needed for the exhibit hall. If we do not have building watchers the exhibit hall cannot be open for the public. Helpers are still needed for check-in July 7th and 8th and for check-out on July 18th Please contact the office if you can help. Please take a moment and review the Harrison County Livestock Expectations on page 189 of the Handbook. The Animal Health Requirements are on pages Please look these over with your parent or guardian. Please know them, and adhere to them at all livestock events. Please speak to your livestock superintendent or educator if you have questions. 9

10 All persons wor king with the Harrison County 4-H Fair MUST be an approved volunteer who has completed the 4-H application process with completed references, background check and 4HOnline profile. Please take a moment to review the Adult Behavioral Expectations. Every adult volunteer is responsible for knowing and complying to each expectation. You are setting the example for our youth members. Activity Corner - "Pairs Tag" Supplies needed: none Find someone you want to choose and/or be chosen by. Don't worry...there's no holding hands in this game. Deciding who is initially "It", that person tries to tag only their chosen partner, who, of course, attempts to keep from being tagged. If a tag is made, the "It" designation switches over and the choose becomes the chooser. Lots of pairs are trying to tag their partners during this game, which builds the excitement. Only fast walking is allowed and three seconds must elapse between tags. From the Indiana 4-H volunteer Vision DATES CONFIRMED BELOW Delegates to attend the Indiana 4-H Youth and Adult Congress October 3rd, Save the Date: 2015 North Central Region 4-H Volunteer e-forum held at Harrison County Extension Building Three sessions are scheduled, and will be offered twice, with different start times to accommodate more people. The Heart of Community-preparing 4-H volunteers to help youth find their voice as they become actively engaged in their communities. -Thursday, November 5, 7:00pm 3. Encouraging the Heart of Leadership Volunteers in this session will receive tools to help inspire youth of all ages to discover and develop independence, and become leaders. -Thursday, December 3, 7:00pm Please contact Rebecca Wilkins for details. 10
