The Informer Harvey County 4-H Happenings May, 2018 K-State Research and Extension, Harvey County Newton Rec Center Event May 12th FAIR BOOK It s Fair planning time! We are working on the fair book. We always need more superintendents, asst. superintendents & Jr. leaders. If you would like to volunteer, please let us know by May 15 so we can get your name in the fair book. The best way to make changes is to volunteer in your area of interest. SUPERINTENDENTS If you have any changes to make to the fair book, please contact us by May 15. Harvey County 4-H will have a booth at this event, 10 AM 4 PM. I am asking that clubs provide 1-2 families to help manage the booth that day. If a meeting needs to be cancelled, we try to notify via , phone calls if there is time, and post on our Facebook page, etc. We will also leave cancellations on our regular number (316) which goes to an answering machine after hours.

2 SUNNY HILLS 4-H CAMP June 3-6th, 2018, Rock Springs, Junction City, KS. Open to youth who have completed 3 rd -7 th grade. Campers will ride horses, go canoeing, hike the trails and jump in the pool. Your camper will sing songs by the campfire, make crafts and meet new friends. Transportation will not be provided to this camp. Cost is $200 per camper. Registration and payment is due in the Extension office by April 27. WANTED: Sunny Hills Camp Counselors June 2-6th, 2017, Rock Springs, Junction City, KS: Teens who have finished Sophomore year of high school are eligible to apply to be a camp counselor. Counselors serve as a leader for 7-8 campers ranging from 3 rd -7 th grade. Create friends and memories that will last a lifetime! There is no cost to attend camp as a counselor. Applications are available on our website and are due in the Extension office by May 1. CAMPFERENCE June 26-29, 2018, Rock Springs, Junction City, KS This event is for youth ages (as of Jan. 1, 2017). Participants will experience the feel of a conference while enjoying camp activities. Transportation will not be provided to this conference. However, carpooling will be encouraged. Visit to register. Deadline is May 15. COUNTY DAY CAMP July 12, 2018, 4-H Building, Newton This one-day camp experience is open to any youth who has completed kindergarten-sixth grade. Campers will be led by 4-H Junior Leader counselors and enjoy activities, crafts, and swimming at the Newton Municipal Pool. Registration and cost have not yet been set. VEGGIE GARDEN Plant pickup is May 4, Friday, 4 PM to 7 PM at the 4-H Building, North Side First 100 kids (K thru 4th grade) receive free plants Each youth participant receives several free plants and seeds to grow throughout the summer. After growing these plants, participants have the option of entering plants in the Harvey County Fair for display. All entries are judged on a participation basis. Registration: Please complete the form which can be found at or pick one up at the Harvey County Extension Office. Bring the form to pick up free plants and planting instructions. *Supplies are limited to first 100 participants. *Harvey County 4-H Development Fund Scholarship Applications are accepted for this event. 3 Save the Date for the 4-H Supporter s Picnic! July 17 th, H Supporter's Picnic- This annual event is held in July at Athletic Park, in Newton Kansas. The picnic meal is provided by 4-H families and supporters of the Harvey County 4-H Program are invited to attend. The 4-H Clothing project members put on a fashion review show during the picnic. Our 4-H program would not be possible without the continued support of community members, and this is our way of saying thank you! Each 4-H Family is asked to bring: Basket Dinner Meat dish, vegetable or salad & dessert. (Enough for your family plus 8 guests). This may include workshops, showmanship clinics, judging camps or contests, skillathon practices, etc. If you are looking for other livestock events, go to this link.

4 Livestock news Kansas State Fair Grand Drive Updates Please note the change in unloading times. Also, MEAT GOAT check in time has changed to Thursday. Unloading times posted are when stalling assignments will be available. Cattle will not be allowed on grounds until 4 PM unless unloading other species. Cattle supplies can be brought in starting at noon if not hauled in a trailer. Berkshires have been added to the Breeding Gilts breed classes. Deadline for entries is July 15. Check back for the online handbook and entries to open in May. Trailer parking will be in a new area this year. We will be posting a map of this change and instructions for parking and release. Livestock Judging Practice: Cows and Goats! Practice will be at Ryan Flaming s, on June 20th at 3pm. We will be working with cattle and goats. Any questions please contact Nate Pitts at Please RSVP at the office, by June 18. We will be meeting once a month until the county fair. We will be practicing on four different species between now and fair. MUST RSVP as location is still to be determined. April 1-May 15, 2018 Raise Your Hand Alumni & Friends 2018 In 4-H, we believe in the power of America s youth to succeed in life; however, only one in three youth say they have the skills they need to handle what life throws their way. That s why 4-H created Raise Your Hand. A nationwide call to action for alumni and friends to "Raise Your Hand" to empower our nation's youth with the skills to lead for a lifetime. The three states with the most hands raised will win $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000! Stay tuned for surprise incentives along the way. State 4-H programs will also receive the contact information of those who vote for their state so that they can be further engaged as friends of 4-H locally. All invoices must be paid in full by June 30, GOAT, SHEEP AND SWINE Weigh Day ALL COUNTY FAIR SWINE, GOATS AND SHEEP MUST BE TAGGED BY MAY 4. WEIGH DAY FOR SWINE, GOAT AND SHEEP will be Friday, May 4, 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Harvey County Fairgrounds, 800 W 1st. One day only State Tags $3.00 each, County Tags $2.00 each. Be sure to bring a check or correct cash for the tags. IF you are not able to bring your animal to the weigh day, the Agents will do tagging at your farm the week before only April 30 to May 3. MANDATORY MEETINGS May 5, 10:00 AM or May 12, 10:00 AM. You MUST attend one of these meetings to participate in the practices. Safety is the number 1 concern and we need to go over all the rules to participate in the project. More dates of practices will be given at these meetings. If you have questions please contact the Leader. ARCHERY You MUST attend these meetings to participate in the practices. MANDATORY MEETINGS Beginners May 16, 7:00 PM, 4-H Building, 800 W 1st, Use North Door. All 4-Her s enrolled in Archery (including beginners) - May 23, 7:00 PM, 4-H Building. SAFETY is the number 1 concern. We have a lot of rules to go over in order to participate in the project. All practices will be on Wednesdays, beginning May 30 at 7:00 PM and each Wednesday until school starts. Practices are held at the south side of 800 W 1st, East of the Bathrooms. 8 New things we are adding: Fun is in the air at the Harvey County Fair! August 2nd 6th, 2018 New and exciting events will be added to our fair this year. I wanted to take the time to explain a couple of them early on. Fair Parade: The Fair Parade will be Thursday, August 2, 7:00 PM in downtown Newton. Ag Challenge of Champions: This event to recognize outstanding Kansas 4-H/FFA agriculture/livestock oriented youth. This event s time and date of the fair is TBA as of right now, but we wanted to make you aware of this wonderful opportunity we are going to have. Ag Challenge of Champions consist of three parts. Part one is about identification of weeds, types of animals, types of equipment and cuts of meat. Part two is a multiple choice test about agriculture in all aspects. Part three is a basic interview with parts about the agriculture industry. This is a brand new to most everyone in Harvey County, so if you have any questions please don t hesitate to contact me. I will be posting more information as we get closer to fair. Champion s Cookout: We are going to award all of our overall winners in every 4-H project this year. Tuesday August 7 th at 7pm in Athletic Park we are going to have a BBQ and a short awards ceremony that highlight s our 4-Her s achievements in their 4-H projects at fair. After that, it will lead into a 4-H dance sponsored by the Ambassadors. Tickets will be sold prior to this event and all I ask of 4-H families is to show up and enjoy yourself! Contact Anne at aelpers@ksu.edu or H STYLE REVUE JUDGING 9:00 am 12:00 noon, Saturday July 7 Harvey County Courthouse Community Rooms PUBLIC STYLE REVUE Tuesday, July 17 th at 7:30 pm in Athletic Park, Newton During 4-H Supporters Picnic RULES The Public Revue will be Tuesday, July 18 th at 7:30 pm in Athletic Park north of tennis courts; it is strongly encouraged that you are there. 4-H ers enrolled in 4-H Clothing purchased garment and/or constructed garments are encouraged to participate in the Style Revue Judging. Champion and Reserve will be selected for each age group for Buymanship and Construction. Champion and Reserve for each category in the Advanced Division will be able to compete at the State Fair Fashion Revue. Purchased Garment Revue a majority of the outfit must be purchased for the project, or made by another individual for the 4-H er if the fabric and pattern were chosen by the 4-H er wearing the outfit. Constructed Garment Revue a majority of the outfit must be constructed by the 4-H er for the 4-H er to wear. 4-H ers will only be allowed to enter one outfit for each class. Advanced and Intermediate Division will be required to fill out the Cost Per Wear Sheet and Fashion Revue Score Card ahead of time. Beginners will be required to fill out Fashion Revue Score Card. All divisions will be required to turn in all paperwork by to Anne at aelpers@k-state.edu or to the Extension office by June 30. Forms can be found online at and are available at the office.
