1 4-H and the County Fair By Jim Boyer Emmet County, Iowa As I was leaving the farm on an early July morning to do hog chores on the south farm, I turned on the radio to hear one of those catchy ads that always seems to bring back memories. I'm sure everyone in rural Iowa has experienced this, be it a song on the radio that brings back memories of a high school moment, of a first dance or girlfriend, or a TV show title song that conjures thoughts of a more innocent time. The ad I heard was for the upcoming county fair. It was a short ad that said It's that time of season, It's that time of year -- The Emmet County Fair is here It is an ad that has been running for as long as I can remember starting in early July and running through Fair time which is always the last week in July. Not only did the ad bring back memories of fairs from the past, but also reminded me that we (our family) had a lot to do in the next couple of weeks to prepare all of the 4-H projects that were going to the fair. The kids had to weigh their pigs and decide which ones were going to be exhibited at the fair as pens of three, which ones were going as individual barrows and gilts, and rate of gain entries. The lead steers and market heifers had to be washed and trimmed to look their best in the show ring. The bucket/bottle calf had to have more lessons on the lead rope to perform well at the fair. There was also the other exhibits to get ready, like sewing projects, baking entries, and photography entries to be printed and framed. These 4-H projects are not just done in the short time before the fair, but have been ongoing projects that our kids have been working on for some time. The lead steers and market heifers are an 18-month project that started last spring when the kids purchased bottle calves from area farmers, that had cows that either had twins or something happened to the cow in which she was unable to raise her calf. Many months of early mornings, before school and after school, of bottle feeding, halter training and chores went into these cattle projects. The pig projects started in February when the kids picked the pigs they would care for as their projects from our hog production pigs per child to raise and feed from 15 pounds to market weight. Not only does involvement in 4-H provide the opportunity for ours and other kids to understand and appreciate what it takes to raise livestock from newborn to a marketable animal, it also teaches the financial side of raising livestock. The kids are expected to keep detailed records of the cost involved in their different projects and be able to show profit or loss at the end of the project. 4-H is an educational program that promotes youth development by engaging the youth in a variety of projects that they can select. Popular projects include livestock projects where the youth care for and show livestock at a local fair or exhibition, and gardening projects in which the youth raise vegetables and fruits that will be exhibited, and hobby and interest projects such as photography, and sewing, or cooking or computers. Local 4-H groups are called clubs and nearly every community in Iowa in which there is a school will have a club. The leaders of the 4-H club are elected by the youth in the club. Adults serve as advisors and project leaders to help teach the youth skills and information related to their project interests. The 4-H program began more than a hundred years ago with the first 4-H club organized in Iowa. From 1905 to 1914, clubs were started in nearly all states.
2 Today, the 4-H program is coordinated by the state and local Extension office, but still relies on local parents and other voluntary leaders to assist with the club activities. Contemporary 4-H and youth programs continue due to efforts of people concerned about the development of youth. Today young people may participate in 4-H community or project clubs, special interest groups, or school enrichment programs. 4-H is available in towns and cities as well as in rural areas. As I am writing this, the Emmet County Fair is now over for this year. Our kids had 4 days of excitement and hard work as they exhibited their ongoing 4-H projects. Many blue ribbons were awarded and some disappointing reds and whites. Their projects do not necessarily end here though. Kevin's calf will hopefully return next year as a breeding heifer and the following year as a cow/calf pair. Jim & Lisa Boyer farm in Emmet County Iowa. They farm 1,300 acres of corn and soybeans with Lisa's family. The Boyer's also own and operate a wean to finish hog operations that markets approximately 16,000 head per year. The Boyers have 3 children Rebecca 17, Elizabeth 16 and Kevin 11. Jim has served on the Emmet County Farm Bureau board for the past 17 years, and is also the president for their local school board. Lisa works part time as a city clerk and also serves on local library board and church board.
