Don t forget to see important fairbook corrections in Cloverleaf. Don t forget to enter classes and submit applications for special award categories Livestock Committee Scholarships, Barbara Godby Award, Tom Stid Award, Rabbit Scholarship, Horse Senior Award, Sprite Award. Entries are not limited by class except livestock, entrepreneurship, and shooting sports. Exhibitors may enter and be judged for more than one item in classes. The member must write the class entry information on their entry form separately for each entry in the class. (i.e. if a member completes 3 quilts during the year, they may enter the quilt class 3 times). Record Keeping projects superintendent will allow members to exhibit same item as another project area. (i.e. if a member submits a record book for a livestock project in the animal species division, they may submit a duplicate copy in Record Keeping) Did you submit an application for County Medals or State Awards they can be entered in Record Keeping. Club officers can enter their records of their work in the club treasurer, secretary, historian. Superintendents are not supposed to make changes or write-ins in the official judging books: Make sure you enter the correct classes on your entry form Keep a copy of your entry form for verification if there are any questions about which classes you entered. Cloverbuds may enter up to 3 items total in Section 1 & 2 and one animal species in Section 3. Please also encourage your members to sign up (and complete) some of the project areas that are great "cross-overs" or add-ons to the projects that they are already doing: All animal projects--veterinary science, demonstrations, educational posters, notebooks, and record books Record Keeping--specific focus on 4-H project records, animals, shooting sports, club officers, county and state award applications, scrapbooking, resume Entrepreneurship--pick any still exhibit project that you have produced this year and make one to sell in the silent auction Teen Leadership--are you helping out in your club, do you lead a project area for younger members? Communication--you could demonstrate the process you used to complete your project or prepare a speech about a topic you are passionate about

2 Ingham County 4-H Horse Camp LAST WEEK TO REGISTER! June 17-19, 2014 Ingham County Fairgrounds Registration $75/rider (discount available for families) Deadline: May 31, 2014 Come to camp and bring your horse!! What better way to kick off your summer vacation than attending Ingham County 4-H's Paul Wolter Horse Camp. 4-H members will have the opportunity to brush up on skills that may have gotten rusty over the long winter as they prepare for the summer show season. The camp takes place at the Ingham County Fairgrounds and consists of two days of clinics and riding lessons. The final day is a practice horse show where participants apply what they have learned at camp. Registration materials for all camp participants, teen helpers, and cloverbud members as well as camping registration forms can be found at: ProjectAreasandPrograms/Horses.aspx under "Horse Camp". If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the committee members listed in the packet. 4-H Camp Kidwell Bloomingdale, Michigan (Allegan County) Resident & Day Camps The 2014 camping season is right around the corner! With this in mind, I am happy to announce that the 2014 summer schedule is now available and you can register anytime! We have job openings for teens (14 and over) as well as others looking for summer employment. Please visit and check out all the great sessions. Discount and scholarship opportunities available. State 4-H Trail Ride June 20-22, 2014 Whiskey Creek Trail Camp, Custer Registration due: June 3, 2014 Your Cost: $45 This trail ride provides 4-H members, parents, and leaders with an opportunity to meet and become acquainted with 4-Her s from across the state, to provide training in planning and conducting club and county trail rides, and to develop an appreciation of conservation and natural resources. Rabbit Tattooing and Showmanship Demonstration Rabbits Tuesday, June :30 pm. Superintendent: Penny Jezuit Ingham County Fairgrounds All rabbits must be legally tattooed. Tattooing offered at above time for a donation to the rabbit program. We will also be having a 4-H judge demonstrating rabbit showmanship. Please do not bring rabbits as this is just a demonstration. It will begin at 6:15. She will answer questions that you may have and freshen up your skills. Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) Workshop EACH exhibitor must have a current PQA certification to exhibit at the 2014 Ingham County Fair. NEW ONLINE INSTRUCTIONS Youth Pork Quality Assurance Plus (Youth PQA Plus ) mirrors the content in the adult PQA Plus program and is designed for producers from eight to 19 years of age. Presented in a format suited to youth learning, Youth PQA Plus consists of two main elements: food safety and animal well-being training. Recent changes to Youth PQA Plus include an online training, testing, and certification option to accompany the current in-person process. How to get started: Youth PQA Plus Ages Register Now link will grant users direct access to the age appropriate course and exam. Parents of Youth PQA Plus Register Now link will allow parents to manage and train children aged Parents of children age 8-12 must use this option to gain access to online training. Once training access is granted, the youth has 30 days to complete their training session. 17th Annual 4-H & Open Show Circuit Hosted by Ingham County 4-H Horse Clubs Season end high point prizes Show bills are now available for the 2014 Ingham County 4-H summer horse show circuit. 3 MI Dairy Expo Show & 4-H Dairy Days July 21-25, 2014 MSU Pavilion Registration due: June 16, H Dairy Days offers youth an opportunity to compete in Dairy Management, Dairy Judging and Dairy Quiz Bowl contests as well as the 4-H Youth Show. Prizes will include up to $1000 scholarship to high ranking individuals. There are no entry fees for the educational contests. Entries and payment for the dairy cattle show, which will be part of the Michigan Livestock Expo Sale-abration are due to Michigan PDCA by June 21. Summer Livestock Shows at MSU Pavilion MI Beef Showcase, June 6-8 MJLS Sheep Spectacular, June 6-7 MSU Block & Bridle Club Lamb Show, June 8 Spartan Classic Hog and Jackpot Shows, June MSU Pavilion, East Lansing, MI Entry deadline: May 23, 2014 Participating in state shows is a great experience for 4-H members to meet other youth and sharpen their skills in their project areas. In addition to the opportunity to exhibit their animals, participants may also compete in contests for showmanship and skills, skillathons, graphic design, herdsmanship, photography, and essays. The educational contests do not require an entry fee, and some are open to youth who are not exhibiting animals (refer to the catalogue). For more information: livestock_youth_programs MMPA /4-H Milk Marketing Tour The 77 th Annual MMPA/4-H Milk Marketing Tour will be held June in Novi, MI. This is an excellent opportunity for youth age 15 to 18 to learn about the dairy industry! Registration is due by June 3, Details can be found at the Animal Science Youth Extension site: FREE TO ATTEND The two day event is designed to offer students information about Michigan s dairy industry, milk marketing and cooperatives. It is a great opportunity for any youth to learn more about careers in the agriculture field and meet other youth from Michigan. Five participants in this event will earn a free trip to the National 4-H Dairy Conference in Madison, Wisconsin. Open to 4-H & FFA members years old. Registration fees, lodging and meals are provided by MMPA Michigan 4-H/ FFA Livestock Judging Contest Contest date: Thursday, July 17, 2014 at MSU Pavilion The State 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging Contest is held in conjunction with the Michigan Livestock Expo (MLE) and is a collaborative effort between Michigan 4-H and Michigan FFA. By participating in the livestock judging contest, contestants can enhance their livestock evaluation and selection skills, as well as improve their communication and decision making skills. Contestants will judge eight classes including beef cattle, boer goats, sheep and swine. Each contestant will then answer one set of questions and either give three sets of oral reasons or answer three additional sets of questions. Two key changes to the 2014 contest is that the state winning Senior 4-H Division team will compete at the American Royal Contest and that the top 15 Senior 4-H Division contestants, who have not already competed at the NAILE, will have the opportunity to compete for eight spots to represent Michigan 4-H at one of two national contests. 5 Record Keeping Books As a 4-H member you may find it very beneficial to keep a personal record of your 4-H experiences. A 4-H record book can be useful to you for planning your 4-H career. It also allows you to document your development and accomplishments during your time in 4-H. Additionally, when shared with parents and leaders it can help them guide the you through decision making experiences. Record keeping ensures that you have accurate documentation of your experiences and the skills you have learned through 4-H. Completed records will allow you to easily recall information in the future when completing applications for jobs, scholarships, or awards. Record keeping also allows you to track how your interests, goals, and responsibilities have changed over your 4-H career. It will be fun in the future to remember your 4-H activities and share them with others. Please do not wait until fair starts to ask for a record book, you should be recording your project as you raise your animals. Future Scientist Video Contest 4-H and HughesNet are excited to be partnering to grow future scientists. We want to hear why your 4-H'ers love science! Each 4-H'ers who submits a 15 second video capturing the wonder's of science will have the chance to win $1,000 and a trip to the 2014 National Youth Science Day in Washington, D.C! Join us for this webinar to learn more. A short webinar is available Wednesday May 28 th at 1pm Eastern that will explain all the details and how to best equip your members to participate. Join us and find out more at sciencevideowebinar 2014 Summer Discovery Cruises Do you want to learn about the Great Lakes by being on the Great Lakes? If so, you will want to learn more about our 2014 Summer Discovery Cruises ( season! For the thirteenth summer, Michigan Sea Grant Extension will provide Michiganders (and visitors to Michigan) with the opportunity to learn about the Great Lakes by being on the Great Lakes. Cruises depart from Lake Erie Metropark, with cruises on the lower Detroit River and Lake Erie, and Lake St. Clair Metropark, cruising Lake St. Clair. The 2014 season offers more than 25 educational cruises around themes such as Fisheries, Wildlife, Wetlands, Shipwrecks, Lighthouses, Weather, Shipping and more. Cruises for educators wanting to enhance the use of Great Lakes content in their teaching are also provided, with stipends. 6 Ingham County Farm Bureau Scholarship Due May 31, 2014 Ingham County Rabbit Scholarship Due July 19, 2014 The Ingham County Farm Bureau sponsors one scholarship each year. This scholarship is based on student need, college grade point average, extra curricular and professional activities, application and a personal interview. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, the following criteria must be met: The applicant must be a regular or associate member of the Ingham County Farm Bureau or the son/daughter of a member. At least one full year of membership must be completed. The applicant must have reached junior status if enrolled in a four-year degree program or must have completed two semesters of an Agricultural Technology Program. The applicant must be pursuing an agricultural or agriculturally related course of study. The applicant must have completed an application by May 31, The applicant should have a copy of his/her transcript and one letter of recommendation sent to: Ingham County Farm Bureau. For more information, visit: County_Scholarships/Ingham_County_Farm_Bureau_Scholarship/ Michigan Farm Bureau 4-H Excellence in Agriculture Award Nominations Due July 1, 2014 Lansing Ophthalmology, P.C. has graciously donated a $250 scholarship to be awarded to a deserving 4-H project member. To be eligible, the member must have been involved in the rabbit project for three years, be at least a sophomore in high school, and plan on furthering their education after high school. The winner will be based upon the member s application and 4-H story. For application, visit: Scholarships.aspx Ingham County Livestock Committee Scholarships Due July 18, 2014 Ingham County Livestock Committee will again be sponsoring up to four, $500 scholarships to be awarded during the 2014 Large Animal Auction. This is open to any senior (2014 graduate) who has or still is exhibiting in the livestock project area for at least three years and plans to further their education after high school. For application and details, visit: Scholarships.aspx Michigan Farm Bureau 4-H Excellence in Agriculture Award recognizes outstanding achievements of Michigan 4-H volunteers or groups that have exhibited excellence in 4-H youth education and leadership development in the areas of 4-H beef cattle, dairy cattle, goats, horses, horticulture, crops and soils, poultry, rabbits, sheep, swine, and veterinary science. The $1,000 volunteer tribute grant, sponsored by the Michigan Farm Bureau 4-H Excellence in Agriculture Endowment Fund, can be used for 4-H volunteer training, to purchase supplies and curriculum materials, or to enhance 4-H agricultural programming locally or statewide. Honorees will be recognized at the Michigan Farm Bureau Annual Meeting and at an appropriate Michigan State University event. Honorees will also receive a personalized recognition memento. Nominees must be registered 4-H volunteers. Nominations are due by July 1 to the Michigan 4-H Foundation. Youth Livestock Scholarship Due May 31, 2014 Since 2000, the Michigan Youth Livestock Scholarship Fund (MYLSF) has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships and educational awards to outstanding youth who have exhibited at the premier livestock events in the state of Michigan. 7 COMMUNITY LEADER O R N E R 4-H Food Booth Shift Request Ingham County 4-H Council exists to promote, implement and guide the 4-H Youth Programs in Ingham County. 4-H Council has identified promoting training and workshop events for members and leaders as a high priority. The 4-H Council is committed to helping all Ingham County 4-H members and leaders to take part in 4-H opportunities by providing scholarship funding to help offset the cost of registration fees. In return for receiving scholarship funds, there is an expectation that all 4-H members and leaders help raise funds by volunteering at the 4-H Food Booth during the fair. Examples of funded activities include: 4-H Exploration Days, Kettunen Center workshops, National Congress, Capitol Experience, Participation Fee Grants, etc. Working at the 4-H Food Booth during fair is one opportunity to ensure that you are helping 4-H Council to raise the funds that provide the scholarships for members and leaders to continue attending leadership trainings. Each club will be responsible for one food booth shift during the week of the fair. Food Booth shifts are 3 hours in length. Each club will need to identify a food booth coordinator to schedule the workers for their shift. Some small clubs may share a shift. 4-H Council Food Booth Committee will provide a shift manager for every shift during the week who will direct club volunteers during their shift. Clubs are asked to provide 6 youth and 2 adults to cover their shift. There are a limited number of roles for younger members; please be sure to consider this when scheduling your clubs workers. Each club will need to identify a Booth watch coordinator to schedule the watchers (preferably adults or older members) for their shift. During the booth watch shift, clubs will need a minimum of three watchers (one at each entrance) in the building the entire time. Some small clubs (.5-1 requested space) may share a booth watch shift.
